I decided to go for it. You know, I've always wondered what it would be like to have a Japanese grandma

You know, my Japanese wife, Maiko, always speaks fondly about her grandma

So today I guess I get to experience the whole thing and I get to share it all with you

That's the obachan aka grandma I rented for the day. In Japan, rental services for a girlfriend and boyfriend have been around

But this was the first time I noticed one for an obachan and it piqued my interest

Apparently you can even ask her to act like she's your grandma and do stuff together

Help out with house chores, attend family events, or simply ask for life advice. Basically anything within reason

So today she's my grandma and the first thing I asked her to do was to make me a traditional Japanese bento

For me personally, I don't have much memory of spending time with my own grandma and for sure never cooked with her

So today seeing my 75 year old rental Japanese grandma preparing handmade Japanese food was kind of heartwarming

Of course, my Japanese wife also cooks but something about grandma making food for you just hits different

I guess a Japanese who uses service may also have a yearning to connect with a grandma that they never had

So what did you do when you were younger?

So I have uncles and aunts? Cool how old are they again?

By the way grandma I made my own hot sauce

Yeah, this one is really spicy look at this one

Yeah, it's my new milder version so I asked grandma to use my hot sauce with the fried chicken

I thought it might be a bit awkward having a random grandma at my house, but it actually wasn't she was totally cool

And I got to ask her many questions about her life

She told me she still likes to go out with her friends to have a drink explore good food spots with them

I finally know where I get that from as well as teaching cooking classes once in a while

Interesting a grandma has anything changed with Japanese food over the years

She says that foreign veggies like bok choy and coriander weren't available back then I love how grandma's full of wisdom

I planned we moved to a park full of cherry blossoms so I can enjoy Hanami with grandma first

We set out our picnic area just next to the sakura trees and then we took a little stroll together

You know cuz I never really got to do this before with my grandma

I asked her advice on how she thought it best to raise my son and how things were with kids back then

Also, I asked her some general life questions. It was really nice to get her perspective

She says that grandpa used to run his own business while she ran her own cooking classes despite being busy every day

They found a way to maintain a great relationship

That's an amazing relationship, so were there many foreigners in Tokyo back then

Cool. She says that some of her cousins had international marriage and even moved to the u.s

So she's used to being in an international environment. In fact, she says that my great-grandmother had nine siblings

So growing up she had more than 20 cousins and she also brought some pictures to show me

She also showed me pictures of the beach trips she took with her cooking class students

They would go fishing and she'd cook the fish sounds so much fun. Do you have pictures from your childhood?
