Moving abroad can be stressful, especially when it comes to money.

Back in July 2021, I left the UK on a one-way ticket, and there was one mistake I made before leaving that ended up costing me a lot over the years.

I travelled through Europe, Mexico, and the US, and eventually landed in Sydney on a working holiday visa.

Tom shared one travel tip that completely changed the way I managed my money abroad, and it all came down to this little green card.

I'm a traveller and I've been lucky enough to visit 49 countries, and this is my top travel tip for managing your finances more efficiently when travelling and moving abroad.

I've used this card in nine countries now, and this is probably my favourite feature that has saved me hundreds of pounds, if not thousands.

So I moved to Australia several years ago, and when I first arrived in Sydney, I did what most people would expect you to do.

I opened a local bank account, and at the time I thought, well, I'm an expat now, I'm living in Australia, I should open a bank account like a local so I can spend like a local.

But looking back, that whole process of opening a bank account, totally avoidable had I done this one thing.

If I knew now what I knew back then, I would have saved myself a ton of hassle and money, so I probably could have bought some more flat whites, because you know, the coffee's just so good in Australia.

So to explain how Wyse works in more detail, I'm going to use the example of me, someone that wanted to move from the UK to Australia.

Now, if you're moving abroad, you're going to need some sort of way to manage your finances and withdraw cash and pay for things and get paid.

Another really important thing about moving abroad, you're going to need to somehow transfer money from like your home bank account to whichever account you are using abroad.

At some point of your moving abroad journey, you're going to need to move money from one country to another, and that's where Wyse comes in to help you save on these crazy currency fees the banks charge.

Let's say I wanted to transfer £1,000 from my UK bank account to my Australian account.

There is going to be fees attached to that.

So at the time of making this video, my UK bank account would charge me £25 to send that £1,000 plus whatever currency exchange fees and currency conversion fees they add on top of that, which is a lot more expensive than Wyse.

If I was to send £1,000 using Wyse, that's going to cost me as of making this video around £4.

I'm already saving a lot just from transferring money from my UK account to my Australian account.

The great thing about this is I can send money using the Wyse app from my phone to my UK account, and it takes seconds.

Most of the transfers that you'll do from Wyse will arrive within 20 seconds, may take a bit longer depending which country and currency you are sending to, but generally it's really fast.

Anytime I make a transfer, I notice it's in my account within seconds.

Of course, this depends on what country and bank you're sending to, but mostly when I send money to my UK account, it arrives instantly.

With Wyse, you can easily transfer different currencies using separate accounts, all from the app.

Living abroad, I transfer money regularly from all my different accounts, from my UK account to my Australian account.

And the thing I love about Wyse is there are no hidden fees.

If I knew about this before I moved to Australia, instead of opening a local bank account, I would have just joined Wyse because I would have saved so much time.

So when I landed my first job in Australia, instead of opening a local bank account, I could have just given them my Wyse details.

Nowadays, I get paid straight into my Wyse account.

I can manage different currencies in my account and I can spend from the same card in many countries around the world.

As a digital nomad, I get paid in British pounds, US dollars and Aussie dollars.

And I manage all of that from my Wyse account.

I've moved abroad several times, including last year again when I moved to New Zealand.

And do you know what I didn't do last year?

Instead, I opened a New Zealand account on Wyse, which let me pay in local currency, get paid from local New Zealand businesses and avoid those annoying ATM fees.

And speaking of ATM fees, which we all hate, if you are using a local currency on your Wyse account in that country, you do not get charged ATM fees unless there's a bank fee associated with that particular ATM.

So for instance, if I use my UK pounds from my bank account in England in Australia, I'm going to get charged ATM fees.

But if I'm using my Australian account on my Wyse card, I'm not going to get charged bank fees because I'm using the local currency.

So if you're moving to a country like Australia, you can save yourself so much time by opening a Wyse account before you arrive.

That way you can transfer money onto your Wyse account, use it to get paid from employers and spend like a local.

So if you're planning on moving abroad or doing a long trip, don't do what I did and wait years to find out about Wyse.
