Hey, I'm Dane, a 30 year old digital nomad from the UK and in this video I'm taking you on my journey back to Australia.

The imperative

But before we get into that, let me tell you how I got here.

Adverbs of frequency

I grew up in a small town in the UK where the path was pretty straightforward.

Go to university, get a job, buy a house.

Or at least that's what I thought was possible.

If you told 23 year old me that I'd been making YouTube videos, earning money online and travelling the world, I would have laughed in your face.

Because back then, I didn't dream big enough.

See, we're raised to believe in a safe, traditional route.

One where you pick a career as a teenager, you stick to it and you follow the plan.

Taking a gap year, switching careers, moving across the world with no real plan, that's seen as irresponsible.

Is it because we truly can't make it work?

Or maybe, just maybe, it's because doing something different makes people feel uncomfortable.

And if you're watching this video, chances are you're one of those people who dream bigger.

I'm living my dream life, travelling wherever I want, whenever I want, working online and exploring the world on my own terms.

I know I'm incredibly lucky, holding a British passport means I have the privilege to travel easily.

And trust me, I never take that for granted.

Travelling gives me a sense of adventure, inspiration and endless curiosity.

Sitting in a foreign country, eating local food, watching how people live their daily lives, I really find that fascinating.

And I feel so grateful that I get to experience that.

That's part of the reason why I share my adventures online.

I want you to watch my videos and feel inspired.

Maybe take a solo trip, to plan an adventure with your family, explore new places with me, even if it's just in your own backyard.

And if you're wondering, how do you get to do this?

Well, I started posting YouTube videos nearly four years ago.

Over time, I learnt how to earn money online and build a location independent career.

Today I work as a freelancer and content creator, meaning as long as I have Wi-Fi, I can work from anywhere in the world.

I loved my job, loved the people I worked with and I was very content in life, until one trip changed everything.

Back in 2018, I took my first ever backpacking trip to Thailand.

I spent a month exploring the country, meeting travellers and locals from all walks of life.

I don't have to work in an office for 48 weeks a year just to get four weeks off.

Something about that just didn't sit right with me.

I'm going to take a year long backpacking trip, see the world, come home and buy a house and settle down.

Spoiler alert, three months in, the world shut down, my dream trip gone.

I had no choice but to head back to the UK, back to my old job and start saving again.

But now I had tasted a different kind of life and I wasn't going to let it go.

A year later, I bought another one way ticket, this time to Eastern Europe.

From hiking the Albanian Alps to exploring the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, enrolling in Spanish school in Mexico to camping under the stars in the desert of Jordan.

I spent the next year chasing adventure, but as incredible as full-time travel is, it can also be very exhausting.

Constantly planning where to sleep, eat and explore, it definitely catches up with you.

Eventually, my fun started to run low and I needed a new plan.

That's when I discovered working holiday visas.

Back on that 2020 trip for three months, I actually spent six weeks exploring the east coast of Australia.

But funnily enough, I actually preferred New Zealand at the time.

But when I was looking for visa options, New Zealand had closed its borders.

I landed in Sydney, started my first working holiday visa, got a job and then eventually moved to a small coastal city called Wollongong.

Morning coffee walks on the beach, endless adventures, high quality of life.

So over the next two years, I explored Australia extensively from the remote Kimberley region to the white sand beaches of Esperance and the rolling hills of Tasmania.

Australia is easily one of the most diverse and beautiful countries in the world.

And after visiting 47 countries, I feel like I could say that with confidence.

But more than that, it feels like home to me more than anywhere else in the world.

This feels so good and so weird where I am exactly right now.

So as you would have just like seen, I had a long journey from Manila in the Philippines.

We had to go to Kuala Lumpur, stay there for five hours, had some nice food at a food court.

And now I can finally reveal that you guys probably could have like totally, totally guessed it that I am back down under.

I just feel like, I don't know, this feeling of just, I feel like I'm at home here.

Like everything, it just feels easy here.

Last time I was in Australia, which was like quite a few months ago now, obviously you would have seen that like so much went wrong in life.

So I have my third year working holiday visa approved.

And we're going to be spending this next year trying to make it work here because I really like it here.

Even just like, even just like landing at the airport and just like hearing Aussie accents and just like, yeah, I feel like I'm at home.

Let's go see this amazing view because if you guys have watched before, you know, I love this little spot.

So  So if you haven't guessed it, I have come back to Wollongong, which if you don't know where that is, it's an hour south of Sydney.

And I spent two years of my life living in this beautiful coastal city.

And I've decided to come back to try and make it work.

It's the Bold Hill Lookout in Stamford Wharves.

One of my favourite viewpoints in the whole of Wollongong.

And I've just been told there's some whales down there.

Like this is just like the best day ever.

I'm, can you tell I'm excited to be back.

I'm starting my third year working holiday visa.

And my goal is to make Australia my permanent home.

This is the year I will try and get a residency visa in Australia.
