Imagine over a million stories waiting to be told, stories that could remain silent without your help.

I'm here at the collections store in Helmsley in North Yorkshire.

It's one of a number of facilities that English Heritage has across the country where we look after a million or more objects.

From the finest art to tiny fragments of pottery, it's a collection that covers thousands of years of the life and community of the land we now know as England.

From the Palaeolithic to the modern era, from the flint tools of our first memories to the Cold War technology designed to record our last.

Here at Helmsley there are over 2,000 pallets of artefacts alone.

The store is a vast mingling of the ideas and ambitions that have shaped the lives we live today.

And through each we deepen our understanding of the past and help our understanding of the present.

By caring for the collections we protect those stories for future generations.

And with your help we can carry on that work and bring more stories to light. 700 years ago medieval craftsmen hand-painted thousands of pieces of glass which came together to form the windows of the chapter house at Weaver Abbey.

When Henry VIII closed the abbey the windows were stripped, the glass was left on the ground to be buried for 400 years.

Now volunteers with English Heritage have carefully documented the collection, they've repacked it in its own special environment.

And they've opened the collection up for study so researchers can think about the techniques behind the reduction and the meanings behind the design.

This wonderful collection is our portal into all of our histories.

English Heritage is a charity and every year we need over £600,000 to protect these collections, to keep them safe and open them up for everyone.
