There have been further cross-border exchanges between the Thai military and Cambodian troops a day after deadly fighting broke out.

Bangkok is warning that the conflict could move towards war.

According to Bangkok, 15 people, all but one of them civilians, were killed yesterday.

Our Southeast Asia correspondent Jonathan Head is at an evacuation centre in Surin on the Thai-Cambodian border.

This is one of several evacuation centres that were established over the last 24 hours by the Thai authorities.

We believe there are getting on for a thousand people living here.

They're being well fed, well looked after.

The Thai authorities have organised this centre pretty impressively.

Lots of medical help, a lot of elderly and children here, even a few special areas set aside for people to put their pets.

So it's a pretty relaxed scene, but the people we're talking to here are quite stressed and still shaken by what they experienced yesterday.

The older ones who can remember previous bombardments, going back to the 1980s, say it was the worst they'd ever experienced.

Of course, they want to go back, but they're still being told by the Thai army it is not safe and will not be safe for the foreseeable future.

And that's almost certainly true, because there are still exchanges of gunfire going on.

There were artillery exchanges overnight.

Both armies have reinforced themselves and are facing off at a state of very high alert.

So at this stage, there's not very much movement.

There are around, according to the Thai authorities, 100,000 people who've had to leave their homes.

And everyone's waiting to see whether anybody will make a move to de-escalate this.

The situation is still pretty belligerent, pretty indignant.

The Cambodians are accusing the Thai military today of using cluster munitions.

The Thais, of course, have long complained about the Cambodians laying landmines, which are illegal, of course, which have injured a number of Thai soldiers.

Both countries, though, have sent letters to the UN Security Council.

So there'll be a meeting there today to discuss this conflict.

And then we wait to see whether any other diplomatic efforts take fruit for the rest of the week.

But for right now, it's a very uncomfortable stalemate.

And none of the people here really have any idea where they might be able to go home.
