Types The pass is available for 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days.

Children aged 6 to 12 pay half, while kids below the age of 6 generally travel for free unless they occupy a reserved seat.

Additionally, the pass comes in two versions, the ordinary version and the green car version, which allows the use of green car or first-class train cars.

Validity The Japan Rail Pass is valid on virtually all trains operated by Japan Railways, including Shinkansen, Limited Express, Rapid, and local trains.

In addition to JR trains, the pass also covers the Tokyo Monorail to or from Haneda Airport, the JR Ferry to Miyajima, as well as some non-JR trains that access isolated JR lines and on local JR buses, but not long-distance highway buses.

On top of that, the Japan Rail Pass also includes additional features such as free seat reservations on JR trains, as well as discounts at selected sightseeing attractions.

There are only a few JR trains on which the Japan Rail Pass is not valid or requires a supplement fee.

Most of all, passholders will need to pay an additional fee when riding Nozomi trains, the fastest category along the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, as well as on Mizuho trains, the fastest category along the Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen.

Alternatively, passholders can use Hikari, Sakura, Kodama, or Tsubame trains, which stop at a few more stations and are somewhat slower than Nozomi and Mizuho trains without having to pay an additional fee.

The additional fee for riding Nozomi and Mizuho trains depends on the distance traveled and is typically around 4,000 to 8,000 yen.

For example, it is around 5,000 yen for a trip from Tokyo to Kyoto.

Note that the same fee applies to all seat types.

The supplement tickets for Nozomi and Mizuho trains can be purchased at ticket offices and selected ticket machines.

In addition, the pass cannot be used on a small number of JR trains that run on portions of tracks owned by different railway companies.

In that case, the passholder would need to pay the fare for the non-JR sections traveled.

The pass can be purchased and used only by foreign tourists and by certain Japanese nationals living abroad.

There are two ways to purchase the Japan Rail Pass, via the official website or via an online or offline travel agent.

When purchasing a pass through the official website, the pass's start date is selected at the time of purchase and the user has the ability to make online seat reservations for trains even before arriving in Japan.

The actual pass is retrieved at a ticket office in Japan before use.

A large number of travel agents worldwide sell the Japan Rail Pass on their websites and at their stores at slightly different rates and possibly in combination with other travel products.

When purchasing the Japan Rail Pass via a travel agent, you will first receive a voucher that needs to be exchanged for the actual pass at a ticket office in Japan within three months of purchase.

At the time of the exchange, you will be asked to select the starting date of your pass, which can be any date within a one-month period.

How to use The Japan Rail Pass acts as your ticket.

To use it, simply insert it at the automatic ticket gates at railway stations.

Pass holders can make free seat reservations at JR ticket offices and selected ticket machines across Japan after the pass's starting date has been set.

Those who purchased their pass through the official Japan Rail Pass website can additionally use an online reservation system to reserve seats.

However, they still need to pick up physical seat reservation tickets at a ticket machine before boarding the train.

Frequently asked questions Are seat reservations mandatory?

Seat reservations are optional on most long-distance trains because they usually carry wagons with both reserved and non-reserved seating.

Meanwhile, seat reservations are generally not possible on urban and short-distance trains.

There are a few trains on which seat reservations are mandatory and should be made before boarding.

They include, among others, the Narita Express, a small number of Shinkansen trains, limited express trains from Osaka and Kyoto in the direction of Amanohashidate, Kinosaki Onsen, and Kumano, and the Sunrise Seto Izumo night trains.

We recommend to make seat reservations for peace of mind, especially if traveling in larger groups or during busy times.

Reservations can be made up to several minutes before departure.

What is the pass's exact validity period?

The pass's validity is based on calendar days, from midnight to midnight, rather than 24-hour periods.

So, if you start using your 7-day pass on March 1, it will remain valid through March 7.

If you happen to be on board a train at midnight when your pass expires, you are allowed to continue riding trains until you leave a station through the ticket gates.

You are even allowed to transfer trains after midnight.

However, if you transfer to a train that requires a supplement fee after midnight, the pass won't cover the supplement fees anymore.

Green cars are to trains what business class is to airplanes.

They come with larger, more comfortable seats, and are often less crowded than ordinary cars.

However, the average traveler will find even ordinary seats to be relatively spacious and comfortable on most trains.

If I hold an ordinary pass, can I upgrade to green car?

Yes, it is possible to upgrade to a green car, however, the pass will cover only the base fare, and you will need to pay the green car fee and the supplement fee for Shinkansen and Limited Express trains extra, which usually translates into a considerable sum and is generally not recommended.

If you are playing with the thought of using green cars, we recommend to purchase the green car version of the Japan Rail Pass.

Particularly since the price increase of 2023, the pass will pay off only if you do a lot of long-distance traveling within a relatively short time period.

It won't pay off for urban transportation alone, or when visiting just one or two regions of Japan.

It will also not pay off for those traveling at a very slow pace.
