A Wall Street Journal report out Wednesday said U.S.

Attorney General Pam Bondi told President Donald Trump in May that his name appeared in Justice Department files about Jeffrey Epstein.

The Journal report, which Reuters was not able to immediately verify, cites senior administration officials.

The White House on Wednesday quickly condemned the report, calling it fake news.

Trump recently filed a defamation lawsuit against the Journal over a separate report that said Trump's name was on a 2003 birthday note for Epstein.

The newspaper's latest report threatened to expand what has become a major political crisis for Trump, whose past friendship with the convicted sex offender has drawn renewed scrutiny after his administration said it would not release the Epstein files, reversing a campaign promise.

In early July, the Justice Department concluded there was no basis to continue the Epstein investigation.

That decision triggered a backlash among Trump's megabase, who demanded more information about powerful people who had interacted with the disgraced financier who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing related to Epstein and has said their friendship ended before Epstein was first prosecuted.

I don't understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be of interest to anybody.

Wednesday's Journal report came shortly after a federal judge in Florida denied a DOJ request to unseal grand jury transcripts related to Epstein, the first ruling in a series of attempts by Trump's administration to release more information on the case.

The Justice Department has also asked lawyers for Epstein's former associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, if she would be willing to speak with U.S. prosecutors.

She is serving a 20-year prison sentence after her conviction for child sex trafficking and other crimes.
