To Bangladesh now, which is observing a national day of mourning after at least 31 people, mostly children, were killed when a military plane crashed into a school in the capital Dakar.

More than 170 people have been injured, 80 of whom remain in hospital, some with serious burns.

He is among dozens of family members desperately waiting for news of their loved ones after a military jet crashed into a school.

According to the Air Force, the plane was on a routine training mission but experienced a mechanical failure shortly after take-off.

They said the pilot attempted to divert the plane from populated areas but failed, resulting in the deadliest aviation accident in the capital in recent memory.

As investigators begin to peel back the layers of charred and mangled rubble, it remains unclear exactly what kind of mechanical failure led to the crash and many victims.

In our initial assessment, around 25 people are still in a critical condition.

We hope that many of them will eventually be out of danger.

Those who survived face a long road to recovery.

This student's quick thinking likely saved his life.

He said he was in the staircase heading towards the canteen when he heard a deafening sound.

Then he realised his school shirt had caught on fire.

He sprinted to the ground floor and jumped on the grass to douse it.

He tore off his vest and his shirt, which saved him from severe burns.

Outside the crash site, hundreds of students gathered to demand accountability.

They said they wanted accurate information about the victims, compensation for the families and an end to what they called outdated and unsafe training aircraft used by the air force.

Zama Islam, a senior reporter at the Daily Star, shared the latest from Dhaka.

We actually still don't know the cause of the plane crash.

Yes, the military administration, they've given a reason.

They said that it was a mechanical failure, but honestly, without further investigation, I don't know if that claim can really be believed at the moment.

What we do know, however, is that they were conducting military jet fighter training in a heavily populated civilian area.

And this school was actually directly in the landing flight path of this military aircraft.

And not just this military aircraft, all aircrafts for that matter.

So I think there are things to think about regarding whether or not we should be conducting military training in a very densely populated city like Dhaka.

The school building that was hit, that was actually the primary section.

So most of these kids were, you know, they were under fifth grade.

So there is this deep sense of shock and devastation and anger.

It's not OK for parents to send their children to school and have them turn up in body bags.

There are still many parents who are still looking for their children.

And we are expecting the death toll to go up.

First of all, many of the children who are hospitalized at the moment, they're battling burns that go beyond 60 percent.

I've covered plenty of fire incidents in the past.

And what I've seen is that people who suffer burns more than 60 percent in Bangladesh's medical system, they usually do not survive.

So we are really dreading the fact that the death toll will rise.

The death toll has been rising, has risen over the past night anyway.
