Federal police raided the home and party headquarters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Friday.

The search warrant was issued by Brazil's Supreme Court, which also ordered the ex-leader to wear an ankle monitor, citing a, quote, concrete possibility of Bolsonaro fleeing the country.

He was also banned from using social media, approaching embassies and contacting foreign officials.

Brazil to stop what he called a witch hunt against Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro is on trial before the Supreme Court on charges of plotting a coup to stop President

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office after he won the 2022 presidential election.

Bolsonaro told reporters on Friday that he never thought of fleeing Brazil, but in an interview with Reuters, Bolsonaro said if he had a passport, he would request a meeting with Trump.

All the countries that suffered some kind of taxation were subject to negotiations.

Bolsonaro also told Reuters that he is the only person who could beat Lula in the 2026 presidential election.

He said he's not thinking of naming a substitute in the race after courts banned him from the ballot and that he considers his trial an effort to remove him from Brazilian politics.

The Supreme Court's crackdown on Bolsonaro added to signs that Trump's tactics could backfire in Brazil.

In a letter opening with criticism of the Bolsonaro trial, Trump said he would impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods from August 1st as a way to support the right-wing ex-president.

But three people close to Bolsonaro said they were stunned by the move and fear it may do more harm than good.

Bolsonaro was also prohibited from contacting key allies, including his son Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman who has been lobbying in Washington to help his father.
