Alright, so I'm gonna try and create a really really wide swing on this one rig So I've heard that's a good thing So I'm gonna lift my arms like this keeping them locked out as much as I can But then when I get to here, I feel like everything's about to break down.

So When it comes to creating a wide backswing, what should players actually be doing?

I'd say there's two big keys that we have to nail Okay, number one is we have to get enough rotation out of the body.

Okay, the body needs to turn Good so you've got your back to the target you turn your chest away from the target Mm-hmm, then from an arm to club for standpoint, we've got to load the golf club into the arms correctly Okay, how do we do that?

So we're going to need to use the wrists The elbow and then the shoulder needs to be able to load as well.

So if you go back to the start The way that I'd want you to sequence this is that as you start to turn away I want you to allow your trail wrist to load up Adding in some of that extension.

I want you to soften the elbow as you continue to turn Mm-hmm And this shoulder is just going to stay in place as you continue to rotate your body away from the target So I think the misinterpretation for a lot of players comes from of when they hear a wide swing of the club head being a long way away from them exactly and so what I demonstrated at the beginning of this video was a wide golf swing But that's just me trying to like push that golf club head as far away from my body as possible Problem is is if I just do that my arms are lifting and separating off my torso My lower body is not really engaged and before we know it that's when we really do start to see this breakdown at the top Yes, so what you're saying is really if we were to talk about the width component It's almost the handle staying away from the body, but we do want the head itself To move we do want that wrist hinge as We take the golf club back.

That's you creating a lever and as you create that lever, you're going to generate a lot more Control over this structure, but you're also going to have a heck of a lot more speed with it going through.

Mm-hmm Yeah, so if I'm then getting to the top I've created this nice wide backswing from address I'm turning my torso.

I've loaded the golf club correctly then moving into Transition.

So we still want to feel like we have this space between the hands and the torso But this is where I'd want you to soften things up and actually allow the golf club to move a little closer to you To help generate some more lag and transition.

Yeah So what we're looking for here really is a wide to narrow golf swing We see a lot of players They would have a narrow and throw it away or an attempt to have a very wide golf swing Eventually it breaks down and before you know, they're back in this position Yeah but I think using the club head as a reference is really good to seeing the way that a Wide to narrow golf swing works So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna get you to set up to that golf ball And I'm gonna show you the players at home.

If you swing right to the top of your golf swing for me mate Perfect Now a great little drill that I like to do is place a shaft on your shaft there Now if you start down with soft wrists you're gonna feel that little bit of pressure of my club shaft against yours is Allowing this to soften even more now, right you'll even look at Riggs here He's still got a beautiful amount of width between his sternum and his hands So he's got the golf club right out in front of him But by me having this shaft up against his there You're gonna see that his wrists soften and he's gonna get that beautiful wide to narrow look So another way to look at this is where the club head is at the very top of the swing We're gonna see it's quite a distance away from my head, isn't it?

Exactly, but if I then start to Transition correctly, we're gonna see that it actually drops in space.

So that loading phase of going from wide to narrow What's a great sort of thought that players could have in the transition to ensure that they get that narrow transition I Would say that they just need to feel like they soften up that arm tension Okay, that the structure that they would have built into the backswing like things right now You're gonna feel as though you're a bit more rigid Yeah, allow it to soften up as you start to shift into that lead side.

I feel that it almost Creates this weightless effect on the club head as I'm then coming down into impact so I can throw it away giving that real Powerful whip at the the moment of impact rather correct Then if I am trying to control that club head coming down in I just feel like it's very forced.

Absolutely All right So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna start off by making a few small swings You can do this with just short little pitch shots as well guys I've got an 8-iron in my hand, but we're gonna go wide back feeling like a big body turn soft wrists and transition and As I do these little swings rigs always important to make sure players have the intention of hitting the ground, correct?

Yeah, this is actually going to make that easier as well Yeah, it really starts to dial in the whole Concept of getting the low point forward and while you're doing this in the first place if you're hitting behind There's a good chance that you're either going narrow to wide or you're just keeping it too wide the whole time All right, let's turn it into a shot.
