Well, there are plenty of Tesla drivers across the nation.

But some people in Texas are going to start seeing some Teslas without a driver.

Yeah, Elon Musk's company announcing the launch of its self-driving taxi vehicle service in Austin.

Sam Stark gives us a look at the reaction tonight.

A self-driving Tesla robot taxi drives down South Congress Avenue Sunday afternoon.

But autonomous vehicles are something people in Austin have started to get used to and are even enjoying.

It's nice that you don't have the Uber driver that talks your ear off or the Uber driver that plays music that you can't stand.

Elon Musk has said he has wanted to cautiously roll out the self-driving vehicles.

He talked to CNBC about the plans last month.

We wanted to it's deliberately taken slow, and we could start with a thousand or 10,000 on day one, but uh I don't think that would be prudent.

Robot taxis were available on Sunday only to those who received a special invite and were operating only in this geofenced area.

You know, all the pundits like myself have been saying there's no way that they were ready, and then they proved us all right by saying that there's going to be a person in the right seat.

Professor Missy Cummings, an expert and leader in autonomous systems.

Cummings is worried Tesla's self-driving technology lacks sensitivity.

I do not think it is possible for Tesla to ever have full self-driving capability, actual self-driving capability until they get more sensors on the car.

Coming said that Tesla robot taxis don't have something called lidar.

That's a technology that uses lasers to detect surrounding objects.

It's known to be very accurate even in low light settings and is being used by other companies like Waymo.

If Tesla does not do this safely and is cavalier and kills pedestrians, bicyclists, people on scooters, then Waymo is also going to pay the price.

While the official launch for the service was on Sunday, Musk said some have already driven along Austin roads for several weeks without incident.

Now the service is available in Austin as we mentioned.

Yeah, with plans to expand to Los Angeles and San Francisco next.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he plans to have thousands of self-driving vehicles on the road across the nation by the end of 2026.
