Today, your guide to Tokyo on a shoestring, where to stay and eat, and how to get around.

Hello, I'm Chris Pappel and welcome back again to Tokyo Eye, the world's number one guide to Tokyo.

Now, today's topic is Tokyo on a shoestring.

In the studio we have John and Norma. How are you two doing today?

So, Norma, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Yeah, I'm from Colombia. I came to Japan seven years ago and right now I'm doing my graduate studies in sociology.

Right, okay. Well, it's very nice to have you on the show.

Now, John, we all know about the skyrocketing yen, and that's making it very expensive for foreign tourists to come here to Tokyo.

But we're going to show the people around the world how to enjoy Tokyo on a shoestring very economically.

You got that right. I've been living in Tokyo for several years now and have been around and know a lot of the budget places to get around on a shoestring.

What we've done is put together a guide on how to stay, get around, and eat on the cheap with the lowest budget possible.

Eat a cheap room in Tokyo? Try Sanya, an area near JR Minamisenju Station and Asakusa.

This is it, and I think you're going to be surprised.

We decided to start by taking a stroll around the area.

It looks like a regular old house, doesn't it?

True, these are accommodations for those who want a cheap place for the night, but even so...

With 7 beds per room, it's like a sleeper car on a night train.

You have a TV set, a place to hang your clothes, a light, a pillow and blanket, and privacy.

The bathing and toilet facilities are shared.

Women especially find more peace of mind with this setup.

If you have at least 4 people in your group, it's ¥2,000 per person per night.

For 3 people or less, the whole room goes for ¥8,000.

The group room also has its own shower and sink.

Slide away and sink and voila! The toilet!

Staying in Sanya, we head over to a hotel that's still a major bargain but offers a little more privacy.

Let's see what their single room looks like.

It almost feels bigger because it's so bright.

It's around 6 square meters and runs ¥3,200 per night.

You have your own personal air conditioner, heater, mirror, telephone, TV, refrigerator.

Even a fridge! What else do you need? This is just perfect.

Because I've stayed in capsule hotels that are about the same price and you know what?

The shower facilities are shared and available for use 24 hours a day.

The toilets are nice and clean and even offer an automatic wash function.

For ¥300 per hour, you can have this unique Japanese-style bath to yourself.

To stay in a place so cheap and have such luxury?

Here's a twin room. 12 square meters and ¥6,400 a night for two.

Plenty of foreign visitors stay in this hotel.

This is a really budget option for travelers. How did you hear about this place?

We went to Japan at the beginning of the year.

For a bargain hotel, the lobby is also nicely done up.

It offers free internet and is a great place for travelers to swap information.

Now let's try some slightly pricier accommodations.

It's designed for those staying at least one week.

There are many such accommodations in Tokyo.

It offers an inexpensive rate but all the security of a full-service hotel.

A single room runs ¥4,000 to ¥6,000 per night for stays for a week or more.

The room is outfitted with bed, TV, air conditioning, and an all-in-one bath.

Everything you need to live the Tokyo life.

And that includes an in-room mini kitchen.
