Police in Minnesota say they've arrested and charged the man they suspect of being behind the shooting dead of a Democratic Party politician and her husband.

Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed on Saturday at their home just north of Minneapolis, sparking a huge two-day manhunt.

Officials have now released images of 57-year-old Vance Bolter, who they claim posed as a police officer to carry out these attacks.

Charged with murder and attempted murder, he could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

Shot dead in their home in suburban Minneapolis on Saturday, State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed in what U.S. officials are calling a politically-motivated assassination. Just 90 minutes earlier, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot multiple times but survived. The largest manhunt in the state's history followed before this man, 57-year-old Vance Luther Bolter, was arrested in Sibley County yesterday evening in a rural area of west Minneapolis.

Bolter was dressed as a law enforcement officer when he is alleged to have carried out the killings and was wearing this latex mask.

Bolter exploited the trust our uniforms are meant to represent. That betrayal is deeply disturbing to those of us who wear the badge with honour and responsibility.

Melissa Hortman had served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for 20 years. Her killing has shocked the community there.

We've lost such a wonderful person in our government.

She was doing so much for the families of Minnesota.
