So we've got a new baby and a new house in the family.

So today, I'm back at my Japanese wife's Jika, Aichi, and I've got some big news for all of you.

The imperative

So my wife's sister, Eri-chan, just had a baby in Japan.

You might remember her from a while back, in my Day in the Life of a Japanese Car Repair Worker, or even more recently, her wedding video.

Anyway, right before the birth, they also bought a newly built house in Aichi.

So after a three-hour Shinkansen ride from Tokyo, we're finally here to visit them for the first time.

And here he is, their baby boy, and my nephew-in-law.

He's one month old now and was actually born prematurely and had to stay in NICU.

Luckily, after a few weeks, they were able to bring him to his new home.

And they've been grateful for every moment they've been able to spend together since he's been home.

Alright, let's tour their brand new two-story Japanese-style home.

It's a 4LDK, meaning four rooms, plus a living, dining, and kitchen area with a total floor space of 153 square meters, about 1,650 square feet.

The house with the land all included was about 37 million yen.

And with all of the fixture options they added, it came out to be around 40 million yen, about 277,000 US dollars total.

In Japan, it's quite common to see brand new homes built and sold together with a land as a package.

These are known as tate-uri-jutaku, houses constructed in advance specifically for sale.

So this is the main entrance, and you can see that they actually have a closet here, which is kind of convenient, so you can put all of your jackets, sports equipment, or anything that you usually take to go outside, just right here, so it's always available for you.

And obviously, like any Japanese house, you take your shoes off when you go inside.

So this is an additional tatami room downstairs, just on the opposite side of the kitchen and living space.

This one is actually the same washing machine we have in our house, just a little bit newer model.

And I would say it's one of my favorite devices in our whole entire house.

And I think I've said it many, many times, but just having a washer and a dryer all in one unit makes everything so convenient.

You put all the clothes in and dirty, and when it comes out, everything is dry and fluffy, perfect for you to wear or fold.

Also, one of my favorite features in this guy is right here, is that you can put all of the detergent and the softener pre-loaded, so that you don't have to keep on refilling it.

You just press the buttons to how many you want, and automatically does it on the display.

So Japanese baths are another thing that I love.

Basically, if you ever want to have a bath, all you have to do is press a few buttons, it'll automatically fill the water to the right level you want, and it'll actually heat everything up, so it's like the perfect temperature.

And what's cool about this one, it actually has a seat, so you can just like sit down and chill.

One common feature of Japanese bathrooms is the built-in air conditioner with a laundry dryer function.

It's especially useful in Japan's extreme climates.

You can hang your laundry here to quickly dry.

Super convenient during the rainy season, especially for homes with only a washing machine and no dryer.

So this is the master bedroom, and as you can see, they have that baby crib right there.

It also comes with a walk-in closet and a desk slash counter.

Okay, so it looks like there's a balcony that just wraps around the second floor of the house.

So at what age would you give your son his own room?

The Japanese washlet is one of my favorite things in a home.

So I think in total, they have three spare bedrooms that they're not using at the moment.

They've got more than enough space to grow.

But you know what's actually kind of cool?

Are these door holders that hold the door in place.

It's all magnets, and it's just easy to release.

He said the back area was empty, so they paid extra for the built-in counter, which is also earthquake-proof, just like the entire house.

I'm sure all the extra storage will be appreciated.

One of my favorite things about this countertop is that you can pull out the devices.

And this one even has an exhaust fan or a cooling fan, I guess.

The house also came with a typical Japanese stove, a spacious sink, and even a dishwasher.

Once you go in, you won't be able to come out.

And here they have a cool little backyard.

Apparently, Junya laid out all of this gravel by himself.

He says it costs about $1,700 if done by professionals, but he DIY-ed it himself and cut it down to only materials, $170.
