Today we are going to learn English while also learning about one of my favorite sports, pickleball.

Now you probably hear the word pickle and think of this, a jar of pickles, but I promise you there's no pickles in this sport.

The easiest way to describe pickleball is that it's a mix or a combination of two other sports, ping pong and tennis.

In ping pong, people use a small paddle, but in tennis, people play with a racket that has strings, but in pickleball, people play with a solid paddle.

This is a paddle and look, it even has my name, Arianita, and the ball is unique too.

It's a plastic ball with many holes in it.

It's very lightweight, so it's not as heavy as a tennis ball, but it's not as light as a ping pong ball.

This is a ball and if you're wondering if it bounces, well of course it does.

Now I am hitting the ball with my paddle.

So now that I have my paddle and my ball, where do we normally play pickleball?

In English, there are many more sports that play on courts, like a tennis court, basketball court, and a volleyball court.

I'm on the other side of the court, but my opponents will play on that side.

The net is not too tall, so it makes it pretty easy to hit the ball to the other side of the net.

You can play pickleball with two players and that's called doubles.

Well, that's what happens when you record a video on a pickleball court.

Other people might be playing and it almost hit my face.

As I was saying, you can play with two players on each team and that's called doubles.

They are playing with two players on each team, but you can also play one v one or just by yourself and that's called singles.

Do you see the white lines outlining the pickleball court?

So if the ball lands out of the white line, that means the ball is out.

But if it lands inside or even touches the white line, that means the ball is in.

Now for the most famous part of the court.

It's on both sides of the net and it actually has a funny name.

This is a funny word and it doesn't even look like a kitchen.

There's no refrigerator, no stove, nothing.

Talking about the kitchen, this area is very important.

There is a specific rule you have to follow.

Yes, this is going to be the hardest part, but we will go nice and slow.

We're going to start with three rules and once you know those, you can start playing.

To start a point, one player has to serve the ball.

You will serve the ball behind the white line or the boundary.

You will always start serving on the right side of the court.

When I serve, I have to hit the ball underhand.

I can serve it like this, like in tennis.

That's called an overhand serve and that's illegal in pickleball.

So when you serve, I will swing the paddle beneath my hips and then I will hit it across the court diagonally to my opponent.

I just served the ball to the other side, so I hit it diagonally across the net and I served the ball in the blue area and it has to be inside the white lines.

If you hit it out or in the green area, then you don't win a point and that ball is out.

Also, if you hit the ball in the kitchen or in that red area, you won't earn a point either.

So that was out of bounds because the serve hit the kitchen.

My friend will serve the ball diagonally over here and it has to bounce before I hit the ball.

Then when I send it over, he also has to let the ball bounce before hitting it.

After the double bounce rule, you don't have to let the ball bounce on the ground before hitting it.

You cannot step in the kitchen if you are hitting a volley.

That's called a fault and you will lose the point.

If you do want to step in the kitchen, there is a way.

You have to let the ball bounce on the red area first and then you can step in the kitchen.

This rule keeps the players away from the net so they don't smash the ball.

Sometimes when I come here to play, all of these courts are full so I have to get in line.

I will use this paddle and put it over here on the very left side and then I will wait for my turn and once a court is empty, I will grab my paddle and go play.

So what kind of got you into playing pickleball?

A lot of my friends played it and a lot of my friend's family played it and it was a really good way to get to know new people and to get new friends and enter new social groups.

If someone is new to pickleball and if I say the score 2-0-2, what does that mean?

So there's three numbers and the first number out of the three is your points, the second number is your opposing team's points, and then the third number is your position between you and your partner.

So if it's 2-0-2, you said, that means that your team has two points, the other team has zero points, and then you are the second server between you and your partner.

So usually people play until 11 points and you have to win by two.

So you cannot win if you have 11 points and the other team has 10 points.

You would need to then get to 12 points before you won.

So Mark, what do I need to start playing pickleball?

I mean, you start with a paddle or a good friend that lends you a paddle.

And then you just have to find public courts like these.

We're down at Sawyer Point in Cincinnati.

It's one of the best places to learn how to play, but any town you're in, there's going to be pickleball courts available public, some private ones if you like, like a bar attached and all of that.

But just a couple friends and a paddle and a court, easy.
