The real big thing, as Todd said, gaps, grip, aim, posture, stance.

What is the most common mistake that I see in amateur golf today, and it's their process.

Most amateurs start with a club in front of their body, right?

So the club's in front of their body, and usually they've already got their stance, and then they put their hands on the ... Well, the problem with when the club's in front of my body, and I bring my arm around my body, here's the most common thing that happens.

People fit the club, and it falls much more into their palm than in their fingers.

So one of the things I always talk about with grip is function before form.

Well, if I was going to hit a nail with a hammer, I'd put the hammer handle in my fingers so my palm would be on top.

So I could lift it up, right, and tap a nail or hit a nail, right?

But if I had it in my palm, I certainly can do that.

So a lot of times when I have a new student, I have a hammer literally in my studio, and

I'd say, pick up the hammer, and let me show you how you'd pick up a hammer, or let me see how you'd pick it up.

Everybody does it correctly because everybody's thinking about the function before they think about the form.

So I don't think about the way someone's hand looks on the golf club.

A lot of people's arms hang more like this.

I got to spend some time with David Duvall, who had a very strong grip.

So I always say, find your natural by simply letting your hand hang behind your hip joint.

Because at this point, you can kind of put some pressure on the club to the point where you can pick it up.

Well, when you do that, you rotate your arm under.

And then someone comes along and says, hey, your grip is really weak.

And they rotate their arm like this, and they pull their shoulder joint out of place.

So is it fair to say we're simply not trying to fight the natural rotation of our arm in general, right?

I have a boy, Tyler Kowak, who's been on this channel.

And what's funny is he's a little bit weaker, and then we match it up accordingly, and it's going to be a little more bowed to keep the club square.

But like I said, if you took that kid and someone said, hey, you need to see two knuckles.

Well, he'd have to rotate his whole arm and basically pull his shoulder out of joint.

When I see amateurs like this and the club's in front and their hand's weak, I'm like, that's an accident or an injury waiting to happen, right?

So the other thing that I love about putting your hand behind your hip is you can pull your shoulder back, right?

So I can get my shoulder in a nice, healthy position before I even address a golf ball.

And then the next stage is, okay, I can create a lever.

Well, really quickly, visually, I can look at the leading edge.

How many players grip the club like this with the club back, the shaft forward?

And then they bring their hands back here and the club's shut and they're like, well, the club's closed.

I'm like, well, we can get rid of all that by simply doing this, club square, push down, hinge it up, leading edge is perpendicular to the ground.

Now, the other thing I really think that's important is I like the shaft to be at an angle to the left arm when I apply my trail hand.

Because if there's an angle here, you're going to fit your trail hand much better because a lot of times I see people put their trail hand on the golf club when the club's on the ground and they can go under and they can have a really bad trail hand position.

Show that angle exactly because I love that right there.

I mean, a lot of amateurs walk in and they're underneath it.

Whereas that's pretty hard to do if the shaft's like that.

So I always tell people, look it, hinge the golf club, bring it up, bring your right hand up almost, well, not almost, like you're going to shoot a pistol, right?

Because when you think about it, your forefinger is on the trigger guard.

When I see someone like this, they pull the trigger.

So I would say, okay, like your finger's on a trigger guard, right?

And again, the grip is naturally sitting in my fingers and then this is really critical to me.

It's like when I slide the right hand back, slide the palm back, I'm making sure that the heel pad of my palm locks in right behind my thumb joint.

So when I'm coming through impact, I want to make sure that palm can push against the lead thumb, right, which stabilizes the club face.

So sometimes I'll see people, they get almost correct, but then they get high with that palm and there's no stabilization.

The club can twist out of the hands, right?

If you just simply have a system, you know, this is my grip, done.

So once you learn it, it's awkward at first.

That's why I love teaching new players because you can teach them right.

If I've already learned this habit, I've got to unlearn it.
