There are many different species of invertebrate, but they all begin life as an egg.

Then they hatch into larva, develop into a pupa and grow into an adult.

They hatch into larva, then become a fry where they can feed independently.

Later, they become a juvenile and develop the bodily characters of a fish.

They become an adult when they can reproduce and then they spawn, which means that they produce eggs and milt to create fertilised eggs.

All amphibians begin life in water as an egg.

They then develop gills as a young amphibian and reach adulthood when they can reproduce.

Birds and reptiles also lay eggs, but both animal types stay inside the eggs as embryos until they are fully developed.

Only then will they break open the eggs from the inside and hatch out.

When the eggs hatch, the newborn birds and reptiles are vulnerable.

The birds rely on their parents to provide food, whereas the reptiles are left to fend for themselves.

Mammals are the only animal that does not lay eggs.
