Past simple

I wanted to escape from humans, from big cities, from people, all of them.

So I looked at the world map and found a country that doesn't have many humans.

There's nothing around us, nothing, nothing.

This is the incredible story of Greenland.

When I landed in Greenland, I felt betrayed.

Somebody lied to me about the country name.

It is covered by a giant ice sheet that is whiter than snow white.

This is the only place in Greenland where you can see the ice sheet where there is a road.

And we're gonna go actually walk on the ice sheet very soon.

So you can walk here all the way to East Greenland, all the way to North Greenland on this one huge ice.

Greenland is actually the largest island in the world.

No trees grow naturally in the entire country because of the harsh weather.

And most of the trees you see here are actually planted.

But that doesn't matter because it's still magical.

They have huge icebergs that break into the ocean every summer.

All of this broke from the ice sheet and they come here to this ocean to melt.

Okay, this is why this city is interesting.

You look at this iceberg, this ice sheet, this whole ice sheet, this whole Greenland, it's coming out to the ocean where 40 meters of ice.

So 40 meters of this leave Greenland and enter the ocean every single day.

You can see them up close and even paddle around them.

They have huge mountains with waterfalls.

You can get so close to it and drink iceberg water directly.

Or you can helicopter around to go from city to city.

Helicoptering in Greenland, freezing cold, taking videos.

We are now in basically the middle of nowhere, about to go dog sledding with 19 dogs. 19 dogs, dog sledding.

It is the only dog allowed in Northern Greenland because it is 100% pure and 100% cute.

It's the closest thing to a wall and people use it to travel around to this day.

As a single guy, I was loving my time in Greenland, surrounded by nature, dogs, and icebergs.

But then I missed people and I wanted to know who the hell lives in Greenland.

Turns out in the world's largest island, only 57,000 people live.

The people of Greenland are way more interesting than nature.

They all have a European passport because Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

I'm the prime minister of Greenland and everyone is welcome here in our country.

The people of Greenland are called Inuit, the indigenous people of the Arctic.

When you walk in snow for one day, it reflects too much sunlight into your eyes.

If you walk one day on the snow, you get snow blindness.

So the Inuit were the first people in the world to invent sunglasses.

These are the first sunglasses ever, ever.

They were invented by the Inuit, which is your people, in Alaska and Northern Canada and Greenland.

And these limit the amount of sunlight that goes into your eyes.

The harsh environment also affected their body.

Over time, their body created a skin layer around their eyes to protect them from snow blindness.

Probably because of our ancestors are Asian.

But now in 2023, the Greenlanders of today live in towns like this one, a few hundred houses next to each other, each house with a unique color.

This is a yellow house, and yellow means hospital.

The red means the schools, the church, and the groceries.

The houses are colored so you would know where to go when you come to the village.
