Wabi-sabi. Nothing lasts, nothing is perfect. The two words were born separately.

Wabi, meaning rustic simplicity, and sabi, meaning finding beauty in old age.

Participle clauses

Taken together, the combined term wabi-sabi implies a worldview that appreciates simple beauty, imperfection, and the transience of all things.

In our fast-paced consumer culture, there is much wisdom we can take from the way of wabi-sabi.

They have iced coffee. It's insane! And then this is hot menu vending machines, so you can get takoyaki and hamburgers. That doesn't even look like a hamburger!

And then they have yaki onigiri, which is fried rice balls. And then they have the drink vending machines, which I kind of want something cold.

So, Tochigi is known for strawberries. We have all these amazing strawberry snacks.

Tochigi no ichigo milk. Strawberry flavored sugar. Strawberry sugar, you guys! This is the strawberry vinegar. What? That is insane!

Okay, so Japan loves their mascots, and they have a ramen dog, you guys. So cute!

Of course, you can't forget all the keychains and things that they have.

I found a Daruma unicorn, you guys. Oh my god, it's so cute.

The car has like a little card, right? And in the car...

So we paid our fee. We paid our fee, and I don't know how much that was, but it's expensive to go driving.

Well, we survived that. It was pouring rain, and all of a sudden it stopped. It smells good, though. I like the smell of rain so much.

So we are at Tobu World Square, which is basically the world. It's kind of like Epcot in America, if anybody has ever been.

But it's like miniature versions of everything.

Yuji loses everything. We just took like 30 minutes to find these tickets. I'm sorry.

Okay, let's go! Yuji is pumping on his hand some alcohol, so we are taking the precautions.

Alright, we are in Tobu World, what is it called? Tobu World Square.

And there's nobody here, you guys! This is amazing! It's like being at Disneyland by yourself!

It looks like this. Wow! Let's explore! Disneyland! I mean, Tobu World Square.

Wow! So all of the places here are miniature versions of the world.

And oh my god, look how cute this is! This is so insane. Look how they did this.

Look at all the people! Literally, that's so accurate.

Everything is written in English. Tokyo Station 1914. That's so crazy.

Tobu World Square is a miniature theme park of famous buildings from all around the world.

The models include ancient monuments, cultural treasures, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The artists paid close attention to great detail.

From the people populating the sites to the vehicles riding around town.

Apparently, the gardens change with the seasons depending on when you visit.

The park is divided into zones, starting with Japan all the way around the world until you come back to Asia.

The amount of time it must have taken to build these mini replicas is probably an insane amount of time.

So you can really appreciate the artwork the artists put into them.

Where are we now? We're going to America! Yay, America! Back to my hometown!

As you can see, these are the twin towers. Oh my gosh. That's so cool. This is so cool.

Wow, this is very, like, heavy. Yeah. You know?

In America, they're always doing construction. Look at this. Construction everywhere. This is so accurate.

So the World Trade Center was made, designed by a Japanese-American architect.

I did not know that, that this was made, designed by a Japanese-American architect.

Look at the window workers. You guys, look how cute that is.

We got Egypt. All the small people around the pyramid. So crazy.

If you look up there, over there, there's like little camels and people up there. Pyramids.

This is it for Norway. This is all Norway has. It's sheep and a church and a cemetery.

That's a cool cemetery, though. It's so tiny. And this little church. Oh my god, it's so gorgeous, though.

Like, I've always wanted to visit Norway, but why is it just this? There's sheep. That's all I have, is sheep and a church.

Yeah, look at the road. Those roads must be, like, man-made. Like, those little roads. It's so cute.

The park was huge, with plenty of spots to take photos. It's great for kids and took a good hour or two to stroll through the park.

Buckingham Palace. Here we are. This is where the king and queen live.

Okay, so far, I'm super impressed by everything here. Like, this is so insane. They got everything so accurate and so, like, perfect.

And it just looks so real, but it's not. Look at these buildings. This is insane.

So much detail. It's so crazy. It's beautiful. Oh, some of these bugs are so large compared to the people.

It's a caterpillar, you guys. I found one.

Look at this. Look at these. They're so beautiful. Like, the paintings and everything. It's, like, so fantastical.

These are so cool. Like, they're made out of fabric.

So, we finished our expedition around the world and now we're gonna go see some flowers.

Are there any flowers? I don't know if there are. I don't know, but it says this way.

Oh my god. Okay, I keep hearing large killer bees and it's freaking me out.

Wabi-sabi is a practice of awareness. Noticing the small changes in nature around us, the changes of seasons, the naturalness of our world, trains us to get us out of that constant cycle of screen time, work life, and business we adopt into our lives.

But if we can learn to read slight changes in the world, we can learn to read the world.

As we pay closer attention to the changes in nature, the snow melting, flowers wilting, insects dying, it reminds us what we need to focus on, what truly matters now, before it's too late.

In 1873, only five years after the Meiji Restoration period, Zenichiro Kanaya opened Kanaya Cottage Inn, which was specifically designated to accommodate foreign guests.

The original hotel still remains and was opened to the public in 2016.

When Japan finally opened its doors to the world in 1854, after more than 200 years of isolation, it received an influx of foreigners.

Dr. James C. Hepburn, who was living in Yokohama at the time, recommended Kanaya Cottage Inn to his friends.

Isabella Bird was one of them. She was the first foreign woman to stay at the hotel.

She visited Nikko and stayed at Kanaya Cottage Inn on her way to Hokkaido.

She wrote of Nikko and the Cottage Inn, publishing it in her book, Unbeaten Tracks in Japan.

In relocating the business to another location in Nikko, Zenichiro established a full-fledged hotel, Kanaya Hotel, which is widely known today as the oldest Western-style resort hotel in Japan.

Many famous icons stayed at this hotel, including Einstein and Helen Keller.
