Why are you even in Japan if you want to make it feel like home?

Home means different to different people.

For me, it's a place filled with love, warmth, and acceptance.

So I wanted to express what it feels like to be living abroad and feeling very disconnected from home.

Home is something that a lot of people identify differently with.

Before we get into this video, I wanted to introduce something that is going to help you decide where to live when you do move to Japan.

A lot of people message me asking how to find apartments, and one of the things that they worry about most is finding a place to live, and especially doing it while you're in your own country.

So there is a service for that, and it's called Homi.

So people who are working in Japan currently, people who want to work in Japan, people who want to study in Japan.

If you're planning on moving to Japan, Homi has a service where you can experience a homestay.

What I love about this is the fact that you don't need to find an apartment right away.

You can just sign up for Homi, stay with a Japanese family that will help you, get you on your feet, learn about Japanese culture, practice your language skills.

Instead of looking for a hotel or looking online for apartments, you can start by getting your foot in the door by doing a homestay first, and while you're in Japan, look for an apartment.

They also have people who are English teachers or people who aren't Japanese that experienced Japan for a long time or have lived here for many years and can live with somebody for a few months that understands that.

So we have the front page here, and basically if you scroll down a little bit, you can learn about Homi and why you should do this to learn Japanese language, learn deeply about Japanese culture, and then you can also check the hosts for where you want to live.

You can choose your location at the top, which I didn't show, but you can choose your location anywhere in Japan, and it'll come up with a bunch of different families or people that are offering their space.

It's kind of like Airbnb, but you get all the benefits of, you know, living with a Japanese family if you want to or living with somebody that has lived in Japan for long periods of time.

Languages, different languages are available.

If you feel more comfortable with somebody that speaks more English, they have that option.

So it's up to you what you want to do, but there's lots of ways that you can go about this.

So I highly recommend you look into this option if you're trying to find a place to live in the beginning of moving to Japan or if you just want to immerse yourself in culture and speak more Japanese.

It's a good way to learn about other people and to just really get in there, get into that culture, immerse yourself, and just enjoy Japan for what it is because when I was 17, I moved to Japan for four months and did a homestay, and it changed my life.

Everything that I did in that homestay changed my life.

Living with a Japanese family changed my life.

You can do whatever you feel you're called to do, but this is another option on the table.

It's just about how to make Japan feel like home when you do move here because a lot of people do experience homesickness.

You should be fully, completely immersed and forget about everything that you had back home.

You know, like, there's a lot of passionate people.

If you move to Japan, you shouldn't feel homesick.

And it's just, it's so discouraging for a lot of people to be thinking that they're not allowed to connect with themselves and living abroad at the same time.

Like, they're not allowed to experience another culture just because they have homesickness or they miss their family or they miss, you know, the culture back home.

So I think that you should embrace both because if you don't, then you're just going to lose a sense of who you are.

Depending on your purpose and what you're set out to do, you need to focus on your strengths and the things that you feel called to do.

If you want to move to Japan because you're inspired by Japan, if you want to move to Japan because you love the pop culture, if you want to move to Japan because you want to learn the language, there's so many different purposes as to why people move abroad.

You can't always say that there's one way to experience this country because there is not.

And there is going to be low times and high times and you are going to want to find a sense of connection to yourself.

And if you don't, then I feel like you just get confused.

Nobody should ever criticize what other people are doing in Japan or how they are living or how they are feeling when they do move to this country.

There is no right way of living abroad in another country.

It's all about you and what you let in and experience and how you get yourself out of that comfort zone.

You should know a basic level of the language that you're living in this country because if you don't, then you're just going to get stressed and you're going to get unmotivated and overwhelmed.

So even though other people have different purposes, there are some things that you can do to make life easier here.

And that is why I recommend that you do study a basic level of Japanese.

Please learn a little Japanese, a basic level at least, an understanding of it.

And if you can go the extra mile and you have the time on weekends or to go to a meet-up or something, do it because that's amazing if you can go beyond just basic level.

But if you're only here to maybe study the education system or hike more and do some more nature activities or whatever your purpose is, do more of the things that light you up.

Do more of the things that don't feel like a chore.

Do more of the things that are going to make you a higher version of yourself.

And don't listen to what other people tell you and what they want you to do with your life because you're going to just stress yourself out in that sense as well.

The next thing that made me feel at home is home decor.

So really making your room feel like you.

And I think this is for any place that you move to or any place in the world, whether you're going to college or moving to a new city, moving to another country, that's, you know, a big step and you want to bring a piece of yourself from home with you.

Putting some life into your apartment with some plants is great.

It's great to have a Pinterest board and to start looking up some home decor ideas to start putting into your apartment.

Furniture shopping is such a therapy for a lot of people so when you move here it's exciting to have your own space.

Another thing that I really feel made me get comfortable being in Japan is having a routine.

And maybe some people saw this coming but having a routine is so important.

And the thing is it has to be good for you.

Yeah, I mean, it's good to get inspiration and that's what I did but not everybody's routine is going to match what you want.

Some people aren't built to just wake up and meditate.

Some people aren't built to just, you know, eat breakfast as soon as they wake up.

You should try to find a routine that is good for you.

If you like to wake up, start working on something or watching TV, do it.

If that's something that you feel you can be the best version of yourself and it's making you feel good every morning then you should continue to do it.

So in the morning, I either wake up and work out or I wake up and I journal or I have a quick morning routine where I just do a five-minute meditation and I just go on my way to take a shower.

There's three different morning routines that I have and I kind of juggle between each one to really match what the day is going to be.

One more thing that I have to put in there is cook foods from home.

Find restaurants that remind you of home that you can go and experience because sometimes we need that little reminder and that little taste of home is just so important.

So I have some girls, actually there were no guys that submitted a video for this but there were a bunch of girls that submitted a video of them living in Japan.

Some of them have YouTube channels and I think some of them just have Instagrams so I will link them in the video.

But I wanted to share what their thoughts were about living abroad and what home is to them and how they make Japan feel like home.
