I do hope and believe that it is a very strong signal to the markets, to investors, job creators, entrepreneurs, the people that make the economy run, that Congress is going to get us on sound footing.

And you can count on that, and you can bet on it, and you ought to, I think today would be a great day to buy stocks.

That was House Speaker Mike Johnson encouraging Americans to buy stocks after yesterday's vote on a budget blueprint.

I've got to say, the budget blueprint, in my opinion, as a former Republican, as a current conservative, who's part of balancing the budget four years in a row, is probably the most reckless budget blueprint I've ever seen in my life.

Adds $4 trillion, $5 trillion to our already bloated $36 trillion national debt.

Let's bring it right now, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

So, Senator, I have preached from the fiscal hawk side of this matter.

I'm curious, your thoughts on the budget resolution, and what I really want to focus on, because we're going to be having Mike Lawler on later on, and I'll let him know what I'm going to be asking him.

You've got the possibility of just savage cuts to Medicaid, which would just destroy health care in upstate New York and other rural regions.

What are your thoughts about this budget after that lead-in question?

It's a huge mess, and the Republicans are busy fighting among themselves.

The House and Senate Republicans can't agree with each other.

The Republicans within the House and within the Senate, why?

Because they know the budget is highly unpopular with the American people.

No one wants these savage cuts to Medicaid.

It will decimate health care for so many people, poorer people and elderly people who are in nursing homes.

Many of these nursing homes would close under the extent of their cuts.

I went to Staten Island, a Republican district. 18,000 people will lose their jobs if they had these Medicaid cuts.

It would cause a recession on Staten Island.

They hate, and why are they doing this and going after Social Security?

And yet, by closing offices, by turning off phone lines, by not even allowing emails to be done, they're strangling that.

And why are they doing all of this and so much worse?

Both sides are highly unpopular with the American people, and we Democrats are fighting every day to show the American people how bad this budget is, how awful it is for them, how awful the tariffs are.

The average American family will pay more.

The average IRA in America, people have, this is their savings, has gone down close to $100,000.

There's chaos in the land because Trump's policies are both unpopular and chaotic, as you saw with the tariffs.

Right now, Democrats, I know you've seen the polls, have the lowest approval rating in history.

How do they turn that around talking about this budget?

Is there going to be a coordinated message?

Are we going to have Democrats continuing to fight each other, or is there going to be a coordinated message moving forward?

What is that message to working class voters who voted for me in the 90s, who voted for a lot of other Republicans in the early 21st century, and those families making less than $50,000 that went for Donald Trump in 2024?

The coordinated message is very simple, and that is this budget is hurting you.

What President Trump is doing is raising your prices.

Inflation is up, and the tariffs will make it worse.

And in the budget, we will try to say he cannot do these tariffs.

We will also show them how cutting Medicaid, they know it, cutting Medicaid is going to be harmful to them.

And Democrats every day are showing them.

We're going to have, we have our Easter Passover recess.

On Tuesday, in the Senate and the House, Hakeem and I and our Senate and House leaderships are in total coordination.

We discussed this this week and put a plan in place.

On Tuesday will be a Social Security day of action.

Millions and millions of elderly people will be contacted by their senators, by their congressmen into not cutting Social Security.

On Thursday, there will be a Medicaid day of action to show people how bad, in Republican districts as you brought up in particular, the Medicaid cuts will be.

And the week after, it's going to be cost of living week, how your costs are going up because of the incompetence, the chaos, and the singular focus on helping wealthy people that's in this budget.

Every day we're focusing on these issues.

Every day the American people are learning how Donald Trump is betraying them, that he's not on their side.

What he promised in the campaign isn't true.

And I believe that Democrats are, we are on our front foot because there is so many bad things Trump is doing and we are resolute in fighting them and showing them to the American people every single day.

And we're getting a huge response across the country.

You saw what happened Saturday in terms of the demonstrations.

We have the host of Way Too Early with us, Ali Vitale, and she has the next question.  Hi, Senator Schumer, it's nice to see you.

I do want to ask you, since the shutdown battle, your mindset at the time was that the United States wasn't yet in a constitutional crisis.

A few weeks later, you said that you did think that the lawlessness of the president has brought us into that posture.

Then how does that change the way that you fight on the budget battle?

I've heard you say that the goal is to fight, but how?

We're fighting, as I said, on the legislative front.

And Republicans, Ali, are beginning to show cracks.

They're realizing embracing Trump, it doesn't work.

So we had seven or eight Republicans join in a bipartisan resolution saying Congress has to pass tariffs, not anybody else.

Yesterday, four Republicans in the Senate, that's enough to turn over for us to win, said they don't like doing away with the clean energy in solar and wind and the brakes that have created millions of jobs.

And on the tax cuts, you have a whole bunch of Republicans who say you've got to pay for them, a bunch of others in the Senate are saying don't pay for them if they don't pay for them.

You know, the CBO just estimated if they do this clear policy baseline proposal, the deficit would go up $72 trillion in 30 years.

And that is going to have huge effects on what people pay to buy a car, to buy a home.

So we Trump people are realizing how bad Trump is, how bad he is for average working families and our job.

You don't see any divisions in the Democrats the way you do with the Republicans.

For instance, when we had our first vote on the budget reconciliation, we had 27 amendments.

Every Democrat supported every one of those amendments.

They're beginning to show cracks and defecting because they know embracing Trump is not what the American people want.

And we Democrats are showing them that every day.

As part of these budget negotiations, a handful of Democratic ideas were stripped from the legislation, including reversing doge cuts to the Social Security Administration, rescinding the tariffs, preventing Medicaid cuts, even prohibiting using commercial messaging apps, i.e.

Signal, to talk about military operations.

So talk to us about what that message Republicans are sending.

The Republicans are sending a message that they're chaotic, that they're so in obeisance to Donald Trump.

And even when he makes huge mistakes, like on that signal chain, letting classified information go to a reporter who had no classification qualifications, they even defend that.

But that's going to that is going to hurt them, because public opinion, public opinion is everything.

And the public is turning against what Donald Trump is doing across the board.

And one word that could describe it all, whether it's the tax cuts for the rich, whether it's slashing Medicaid and Social Security, whether it's the tariffs or whether it's what he did on signal, is chaos.

The average American sees chaos when they go to the grocery store and see these prices all over the place and the shortages.

The average American sees chaos when they see that their 401k has gone down maybe close to $100,000, the money they put in every month thinking, at least I'll have a nest egg for my retirement.

The American people see chaos when they see these billionaires seeming to run the government just for themselves.
