Valentine's Day is just around the corner and you can see red and pink colors as well as heart-shaped decorations everywhere you look.

Although some people might say that Valentine's Day has become commercialized over the years, it's still a very special day that is celebrated in many countries around the world.

Each culture has its own unique way of celebrating Valentine's Day and today, I'd like to share with you how Americans celebrate this day.

Did you know that Valentine's Day is a big deal in schools all across the United States?

It's a special time for elementary school kids to show their appreciation for their classmates by exchanging cute Valentine's Day cards.

I remember my own experience when I transferred to an American school in 4th grade.

I wrote a thank you letter to my classmate, thanking him for being my first American friend.

It's funny to think back on it now because I'm pretty sure my letter was full of spelling and grammar mistakes.

But we ended up going to the same high school and college and we've been the best of buddies ever since.

Valentine's Day is a special day for couples.

It's common for couples to go out to fancy restaurants and many of these restaurants offer Valentine's Day specials.

Popular spots tend to get booked weeks in advance, so it's best to make reservations early.

Traditionally, men give gifts to women on this day, but nowadays, both partners usually exchange gifts and cards.

It's also common to send Valentine's Day cards to family members, especially to one's mom.

And if you're a pet lover, you'll be happy to know that many people buy gifts for their furry friends on this day too.

In fact, 1 in 4 people buy Valentine's gifts for their pets.

And would you believe that almost half of them admit they cuddle with their pets more than their partner?

Lots of couples choose this special day to get engaged.

In fact, about 10% of couples in the United States celebrate their engagement on Valentine's Day.

But remember this day is not just for couples.

It's a perfect opportunity to show some love and appreciation to all the people you care about.

Like your friends, family members, and even pets.
