  • From CNN, I'm Afoma Dike with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, April 1st.

  • President Donald Trump's second term is facing its first major political battle today.

  • Voters in Wisconsin and Florida are casting their ballots in key elections.

  • Two Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates are going head-to-head in a race that'll either retain the court's liberal majority or flip the court back to conservatives.

  • In Florida, two vacant U.S. House seats are up for grabs to replace former Republican

  • Representatives Matt Gaetz and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, vacancies that only tighten the GOP's slim majority.

  • Here's CNN Politics senior reporter Stephen Collinson.

  • Say a Democrat got to within about 10 points in one of these races.

  • If you're a Republican who is sitting on a 10-point margin or less, and there are plenty of them in your constituency, you're really going to start worrying about what's going to happen in the midterm elections next year, the impact of Trump's policies.

  • And that might make you think a little bit differently about how things are going in the United States and the direction the White House is taking.

  • The federal government has suspended several research grants at Princeton University.

  • That's according to a letter from the university president and obtained by CNN.

  • Here's CNN's Gloria Pazmino.

  • The university was notified by multiple agencies, I should say, including the Department of

  • Energy, NASA, and the Department of Defense.

  • So the university president in his letter addressed anti-Semitism and the fact that the university is trying to do something about combating it.

  • But it's not yet clear yet if this is the source of the administration's funding cuts.

  • So that part is still unclear.

  • We've seen the Trump administration target other universities, including UPenn, over some other parts of their agenda that they are not in agreement with.

  • A spokesperson for Princeton University didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • CNN has also reached out to the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Defense Department for comment.

  • The White House says President Trump is, quote, perfecting a tariff plan with his trade advisers.

  • The slew of new tariffs is expected to be revealed tomorrow and goes into effect immediately,

  • So businesses and nations across the world were hoping it would happen after April 2nd to leave room for negotiations.

  • CNN's Vanessa Yurkavich spoke to an analyst at Wells Fargo about the impact.

  • Jeremy Jensen says that one scenario is that the supplier would absorb all of the costs, all of the costs of the tariffs.

  • Another scenario is that it would be split between the supplier and the business.

  • And then the third scenario is that there would be a split between the supplier, the business, and ultimately the consumer trying to take a share of that burden of whatever kind of tariff is coming.

  • Ultimately, though, businesses have no idea what to expect.

  • And that is why, guys, they have to plan out different scenarios in order to figure out what to do when the news drops.

  • Buyers flooded car dealerships in March to avoid high prices.

  • Ford reported that sales rose 10 percent last month.

  • A wide-reaching storm is set to bring severe weather to the central and eastern regions of the country this week.

  • CNN's Mary Gilbert has the details.

  • Yeah, Ifeoma, millions of people are in the path of severe and potentially record-breaking weather this week, and the threats will start tonight and get worse on Wednesday.

  • Severe thunderstorms will develop this evening, stretching from Texas to Nebraska, and will track east overnight.

  • Damaging winds and hail are the main threats, but tornadoes are also possible.

  • Wednesday's storm threat will be more intense and widespread than tonight's, with severe thunderstorms possible anywhere from the Southern Plains to the Mississippi Valley and Midwest.

  • Widespread damaging wind gusts, hail, and tornadoes are likely.

  • The so-called Brotherly Shove.

  • That's next.

  • NFL owners have delayed a decision on whether to ban the tush push.

  • It's a play in which the quarterback is pushed from behind by the whole offensive line, often resulting in a short yardage gain.

  • It's been a key element of the Philadelphia Eagles' success in recent years, and some

  • NFL teams are opposed to the play in the interests of player safety and competitiveness.

  • The owners agreed on making a new kickoff format permanent, allowed each team to get an opportunity to possess the ball during overtime, regardless of the outcome of the first drive, and expanded the instances in which instant replay can assist on-field officials making a call.

  • That's a wrap.

  • Join us again at 6 a.m. Eastern.
