Overall, Jesus's formative years were relatively simple.

But one day, the boy Jesus becomes a man who challenges an empire.

Jesus's adult years pose an even greater challenge for experts.

What did he do for more than a decade before preaching around the age of 30?

We don't know if he was married and had children, or even what he looked like.

Some of the oldest known images of Jesus are hidden here.

In a pre-photographic era, artists had no idea what Jesus really looked like either.

What the artists seem to have done is simply taken templates that they would have worked with for their frescos and for their mosaics.

Artists often used the template for the God Dionysus, giving Jesus long flowing hair and no beard.

When Christianity spread north into Europe, the face of Jesus morphed into that of a European.

But what we should imagine is Jesus looking like a typical Jewish man from Galilee.

If I wanted to guess what Jesus would have really looked like, I would presume he would have had dark, if not black hair.

He would have had a stubbly beard that he wouldn't have shaved too often.

Dark, of course, from being out in the sun.

Church paintings have long represented Jesus as a carpenter.

But he probably did the backbreaking work of a day laborer, like his father.

I think you have to remember that Jesus wasn't alone in living that kind of life in the ancient world.

And there are echoes of this blue collar existence in his later teachings.

So the insights that he has about God come from out of that experience.

As a hired hand, Jesus would have been forced to leave tiny Nazareth on foot to look for work.

He moves around from village to village on market day fixing tools for people, and it's maybe out of that that eventually comes his ministry.
