This morning in Consumer Confidential, a guide to kickstarting our careers.
Which jobs are hot, where to find work and the one thing that could give you a boost in today's hiring market.
Here with the scoop, Linkedin's editor-in-chief Mr. Dan Roth.
Dan, [it's] always good to see you.
Good morning. - Good to be here.
Okay, so we got a lot of graduates, college graduates going to be entering the job market, what's the market like especially for folks who are just maybe get their foot in the door trying to get started?
It's not the best of times to be starting your career; hiring is down about 10 % year-over-year.
And because of layoffs last year in some like hot Industries like tech and consulting, you're basically not just competing with your classmates, you're now competing with laid-off workers with experience.
That said, not the worst of times.
Job openings are still way up over COVID, of the pre-COVID era.
About a third of the jobs on LinkedIn right now are for entry-level positions and there are kind of unique skills that new grads can talk about that set them apart from the competition which I think we're going to get into.
Yeah, so if we zoom in a little bit, can you talk about the roles and maybe the industries with the most opportunities?
Yeah, so one of the ways to start a new job is to look where the demand is so we pulled all the data on who is hiring, people with BAs who are just... who are kind of career starters, there are three big roles stood out.
Okay.
One is investment banking analyst, 26% jump year-over-year.
Investment Bank hiring.
The second is behavioral health technician and medical assistant.
So these are all places that are have entry-level positions you can get into with the BA. - Okay.
Second way to look is the industries that are hiring, so three big Industries jump out: education, 15% year-over-year jump;
government administration and construction all really want people who don't have a ton of experience and they need the bodies. - Okay.
So we always hear "location, location, location" and you say that that actually works when it comes to finding a job too.
You should go where the jobs are.
That seems like pretty simple advice that is very true.
Two states really jump out there.
One is Arizona, Arizona very 108
REMOTE AND HYBRID JOBS ARE
STARTING TO DWINDLE.
13% OF JOBS ARE IN ONE OF THOSE
CATEGORIES.
UP FROM LAST YEAR BUT STILL A
DROP IN THE BUCKET.
>> EVERYTHING WE HEARD IN
PREVIOUS YEARS TALKING ABOUT
CODING, THINGS LIKE THAT.
NOW IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYTHING IS
ABOUT AI.
>> YEAH.
SO THE GOOD PART ABOUT THIS IS
YOU CAN GET AI SKILLS WITHOUT
BEING SUPER TECHNICAL, BUT YOU
HAVE TO HAVE AI SKILLS.
A RECENT STUDY WE DID FOUND 66%
OF EMPLOYEES SAID THEY WILL NOT
HIRE SOMEONE UNLESS THEY HAVE AI
SKILLS.
71% OF EMPLOYERS SAID THEY WOULD
RATHER HAVE SOMEONE WITH LESS
EXPERIENCE WITH AI SKILLS.
THE GREAT PART IS YOU DON'T JUST
HAVE TO BE IN TECH.
THERE ARE INDUSTRIES HIRING FOR
THESE AI SKILLS TEND TO BE
OUTSIDE OF TECH.
THE THREE BIG ONES ARE SUPPORT
STAFF, REAL ESTATE AND RETAIL.
THEY ARE ADDING TONS OF AI
SKILLS.
>> THAT'S INTERESTING.
>> WHAT SETS YOU APART TO LAND
THE JOB?
>> THEN NETWORK LIKE CRAZY.
YOUR JOB, AFTER YOU GET OUT OF
COLLEGE, IS A NETWORK.
MEET AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE.
APPLY BROADLY.
DON'T JUST APPLY TO THE BIG
BRAND NAME COMPANIES.
THINK SMALL BUSINESSES, BIG
MARKET.
WHEN YOU GET AN INTERVIEW, COME
IN SUPER PREPARED.
YOU GUYS ALL KNOW THIS WELL.
BUT YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU
HAVE DONE RESEARCH, YOU COME IN
WITH IDEAS, HOW CAN THIS COMPANY
SET THEMSELVES APART FROM YOUR
COMPETITION.
THE LAST ONE IS WHEN YOU LAND
THAT JOB, BE PREPARED TO
ACTUALLY GET STUFF DONE.
>> GET TO WORK.
>> DO AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
JUST BE THE PERSON THAT GETS
