  • Now, as you've heard, Microsoft's announced plans to improve its Bing search engine to include artificial intelligence.

  • The company boasts it will change the way we use the Internet by providing specific search answers more quickly.

  • A chat box will appear beside searches, allowing users to ask questions.

  • It will use the same technology as ChatGPT, which was launched two months ago.

  • I talked to Carolina Milanesi, thefrom The Heart of Tech founder and principal analyst.

  • I asked her why they're also so keen to get in on the act.

  • They're keen because the idea of using artificial intelligence to augment the exchange between the human and the search engine will allow for new monetization, new models, from an advertising perspective.

  • And, of course, for Microsoft, which is a bit of an underdog when it comes to search, there's more flexibility in disrupting the model because they're less dependent on the revenue compared to Google.

  • So, ChatGPT, as... as it's known, how does that change how... how we search?

  • Is it... is it a conversation you're having with your monitor, your device, as opposed to typing in, you know, a search?

  • It's... it's more comprehensive, the way that you ask for the information that you're looking for.

  • You can get into a conversation.

  • Microsoft was explaining that, now, Bing will have a chat option, where you're able to refine your search.

  • For instance, if you're looking for a car and you're given some options, you can then refine based on the... the engine size that you want or how much money you have to spend for that car.

  • So, it's about refining, but at the core of it, it's really about using natural language to ask that question.

  • Up until now, we've been trained to ask questions in a... in a way that we think the search engine is going to understand this.

  • And Microsoft was sharing that pretty much half of the queries don't generate a positive answer.

  • So, that means that there's definitely room for improvement between the way that we want to talk to a search engine and the answers that we want back.
