  • Here's how to painlessly switch your data

  • from one iPhone to another,

  • like when you get a new phone.

  • We will cover the steps you need to take

  • before switching your iPhones

  • and cover the two major methods of switching,

  • using the quick-start feature or using iCloud.

  • First, you need to save your current iPhone's data

  • in the event that something goes wrong.

  • This means making a backup.

  • You can back up your iPhone's data

  • by opening the settings app,

  • tapping your name at the top of the page,

  • and then selecting "iCloud."

  • Here, you'll find "iCloud Backup."

  • For the full details on how to make sure

  • that everything is backed up,

  • check out our video on how to back up your iPhone.

  • Secondly, if your phone uses a physical SIM card,

  • you need to take the SIM card

  • out of your current iPhone and put it into your new one

  • if you want to keep the same phone number.

  • Switching SIM cards isn't hard,

  • but you'll need a special tool to do it.

  • If you're not sure of the steps,

  • check out our video on how to remove your SIM card.

  • Also, if you have an Apple Watch,

  • you'll want to unpair it from the current iPhone.

  • You can do this through the watch app.

  • The first method of switching iPhones

  • and transferring your data is by using quick start.

  • First, turn on your new iPhone and connect it to a charger.

  • Then place your old iPhone near it.

  • Next, a pop-up should appear on your old iPhone

  • asking if you'd like to use your Apple ID

  • to set up your new iPhone.

  • Tap "Continue."

  • Wait for an animation to appear on your new iPhone screen,

  • then hold your old iPhone over the new one, as directed.

  • On your new iPhone, enter a passcode

  • and set up face ID or touch ID.

  • Then sign in to your Apple ID account.

  • You'll be asked if you want to transfer data

  • directly from your old iPhone

  • or want to restore data from an iCloud backup.

  • For this example, we're going to click

  • transfer data directly from your old iPhone.

  • Keep your devices on and near each other

  • until the new iPhone is ready to use.

  • The second method is using the iCloud backup.

  • Turn on your new iPhone and connect it to a charger

  • and follow the instructions on-screen.

  • Also, make sure that you connect to a WiFi network.

  • Once you reach the apps and data screen,

  • tap "Restore from iCloud Backup"

  • and sign in to your Apple ID account.

  • Choose the backup you want to restore your data from.

  • Chances are it'll be the most recent one.

  • Keep your iPhone connected to WiFi

  • until the backup transfer is complete.
