  • S: Hey sweet stuff. M: Hi, pancha. S: What's happening here?

  • M: I'm so grumpy. S: Why are you grumpy girl?

  • Because I did something to my wrist, but I don't know what I did to it

  • But it hurts like, super bad and you're leaving for Poland in like four or five days

  • and so we were gonna film some stuff and go on some adventures...

  • Uhh..

  • It's frustrating, but this is life, right? It's uh, Golden Week holiday, which means like everything's closed

  • It's like doctors offices are, you know, closed.

  • Our physiotherapist is gone until... S: I think in two more days. M: ...until Thursday or Friday

  • Yeah, I guess today we're going to try to do a

  • gentle adventure somewhere. S: Let's get to it, girl! M: Alright! Gentle high-five!

  • S: Don't hurt this hand. We need this one

  • Gently... M: Man!

  • Cheese my peas.

  • Never thought we'd do a husband does my makeup tag.

  • So step one is...cream?

  • You need to put a little bit of cream.

  • How many pumps?

  • Just like, one or less. Yep! - Oh, too much.

  • Okay, so just take your finger, stick it in it. Yeah, and then put some dabs on my face

  • You always want to make sure your face is super moisturized before you put makeup on, so

  • Okay. Now you just - no, now you use your other hand. Not, no! Oh my god

  • Ahh! Video's cancelled!

  • Using this hand, S: Yeah? M: begin to rub this cream in, okay? I mean, however you rub cream in is fine

  • Just - you don't want to put too much cream on my face or the makeup won't *Meemers meows* That's right, Meemers!

  • So while this dries, do you want to try braiding my hair?

  • Sure! Okay, let's brush the ducky head. M: Okay? S: Okay

  • M: Here we go! So you actually know how to braid?

  • Yeah, of course! It's three, we did that at like Christian camp in summer where...

  • What are you talking about?

  • ...they leave you in the woods with a bunch of other kids, where

  • all the parents are like, "I don't want my kids for the summer,

  • please take them off my hands." And my parents sent me to one and then...

  • M: Really? S: ...you make like friendship braids

  • One kid was playing with that ball that's on the string that's around the pole and you're suppose to like,

  • hit it back and forth and then one kid just like jammed his fingers through his hand, and everyone was like "Whooaah"

  • So you get three big chunks?

  • Yes. Make me look like the wife you'd like to see outside

  • Alright, let's get them push-up bras out

  • Alrightttt

  • Ow, pinchy! What are you doing?

  • I don't know what - all this sh*t is getting tangled around my fingers.

  • Ow! So pinchy!

  • Maybe we shouldn't have filmed anything at all today.

  • You look great.

  • Let's take a look and see if you can see it from here. S: Yeah, my god!

  • Is that - is that Martina or is that Daenerys, Queen of the dragons, first of her kind?

  • Now, this is - this is absorbed. S: BB Cream, yeah. M: Okay, shake it. Okay

  • You are using S: Yeah. M: ...only one pump.

  • S: One pump. M: It will oxidize. Holy sh*t, alright.

  • Good. One pump, let's go.

  • M: Alright. S: Now little dots, right? M: Yeah. Okay. You can start blending it now. Yeah

  • It dries and it oxidizes and changes color

  • Look at you, beautiful face

  • I love you so much.

  • Don't forget to go under my eyes

  • S: Is that good? M: How am I supposed to know if this is good?

  • You look great to me! M: Does it look coated?

  • Yeah!

  • So, you're supposed to take the BB Cream from your mouth. You lick it, and then you just rub your face with it.

  • Just like that. Oh, yeah. Oh my god so much fluff.

  • Powder. S: Powder!

  • Okay so, this is a pressed powder kit.

  • S: Yep! M: And what it does is it's going to absorb the oil

  • and make my skin look matte, and keep this from falling off

  • So we're doing this to kind of like, set it.

  • S: Okay. M: Okay, so, you're going to gently swipe it across.

  • Yep, yep! That's enough.

  • S: Okay. M: And you're gonna have to be like, here's a little here, here's a little here

  • So the start on the forehead so you can see what it looks like

  • See? S: It looks like nothing.

  • And it should look like nearly nothing, but is it looking matte instead of glossy?

  • Yeah, that's true. Okay.

  • So when you start doing this, you don't want to push too hard or you'll literally wipe off the makeup

  • So I have a question. M: Mhmm?

  • At what point do you get that line on your neck

  • like all the girls in my high school used to do?

  • So in order to get that amazing neck skin-color line,

  • that means that you're using foundation that doesn't match your skin color

  • and you're putting it on so thick.. S: I'm gonna get your ears also

  • No, you don't need to get my ears at all. S: Okay, well I got a little bit of your ear

  • That's done! You ain't putting no mascara on me because I will die. S: What do I do with this brush?

  • Okay, so, when I smile,

  • right? S: Yeah. M: I have these cheeks here. S: Yeah

  • And then it goes like this! S: Yeah.

  • So we're trying to make it look like my cheeks always go up. S: Okay.

  • We're trying to make it look angled.

  • S: Oh, f*ck

  • Yes! S: There you go. Wow that's so pink.

  • Give it a dab. S: Dab!: M: That's enough!

  • And now smile.

  • Like that?

  • Can you see the color going on? S: Yeah, I see a bit of pink, I guess?

  • Yes, there you go. Alright! You got it

  • Okay. See you put so much on. S: Did I? M: You can't remove it. S: I can't remove it?

  • No. So... S: There are all these rules! M: I know

  • Just, gently up.

  • Okay -

  • I'm doing the swipey up and down!

  • But you gotta look!

  • You got to be like, "Does it look pinker? Does it not look pinker?" You just don't go

  • ble ble ble ble ble ble ble

  • It really does look a lot pinker

  • You look in the mirror and see for yourself

  • I think you did a fantastic job.

  • Did I? M: Yeah! S: Oh my gosh, I thought I did a terrible job.

  • I'm so glad M: I think you, I think you did a stellar job!

  • Well, it's so easy because you're so pretty! M: Hmm, it's one of these, is it?

  • Martina can't accept a compliment... M: I can't! S: ..to save her life!

  • How do you guys feel? S: Ever! M: Okay,

  • if I had to save my life, I could. If someone was like, "You look so pretty right now!"

  • S: No, I think you'd rather die M: ... or you're gonna die, I'd be like

  • S: ...rather than accept the compliment

  • There's a bridge that's about to collapse and they're like,

  • "All you need to do is accept the compliment. You look so pretty right now!" I'll be like, "it's the makeup!"

  • Even after all these years, I think you're actually even more beautiful than when we first met

  • I think I look better than when we first met

  • I was pretty dumpy

  • So, Simon got me this awesome little tiny DGI camera for my birthday because I'm having a lot of problems holding the cameras lately

  • I can hold them but it's really exhausting for my tendons and my arms and I get really shaky

  • So we're gonna try to film our little mini adventure that we're going on to get lunch

  • So right now you guys are probably looking at footage through the main camera. And now, this is the footage of the other one

  • Whoop!

  • And that's me. So, I gotta go this way because it's bright. There we go!

  • So we're gonna walk over to the conveny because I cannot use my bike today because of this arm

  • I'm just gonna show you what we're gonna eat for today. This is a normal day in the life

  • With Simon and Martina

  • That's right. Goodbye, bike. Today, I will be walking, one of my all-time least-favorite things to do

  • Think of me while I move slowly

  • S: Whatcha looking at, girl? M: These are like, snapdragons

  • It's so pretty

  • It's just growing out of the side of the road here along with all these clovers, you know?

  • And like, it just looks so pretty. Like this whole area looks so nice.

  • Oh! They have pots here, too!

  • So like someone's taking care of this and there's a rosemary bush at the bottom. How nice!

  • One of the things I really like about Martina that maybe most people have but I don't is, she really knows

  • plants really well and she look at it and be like, "Ooh, look at that! That's a Snapdragon."

  • "Woo, there's lavender. Woo, here's lilies of the valley."

  • I'm like, "There's a plant."

  • There's a what? There's a plant

  • It's not concrete, there's a plant. Here's a doggie. M: I need to thank my granddaddy for that

  • Here's a nice little doggie comin' along!

  • Puppy in a basket!

  • This part of the video is for Martina's mom, who always likes Martina taking pictures in front of flowers

  • Hello -

  • Even when we were little, we'd be like somewhere in Vancouver

  • at the suspension bridge, and she'd see like a pot of planted flowers

  • that were growing and she'd be like, "Let's take a photo by that tree or like behind those bushes!"

  • So we have all these family photos of us behind trees being like... But it's not as a joke!

  • My mom really enjoys nature. And so she genuinely is like, "take a look at that!"

  • Maybe that's why I notice all the plants and stuff, you know? S: Could be!

  • If we're gonna take a photo,

  • we need to just like, plant ourselves behind a plant and just jam ourselves out of it

  • So pretty~ S: It's real pretty

  • Yeah~

  • So, one of the things that we absolutely love about Japan is that convenience stores are actually convenient

  • No matter where you are,

  • you're going to be able to find a convenience store, and they have really dope food

  • It's fresh,

  • they do coffee, like, it is more than a convenience store

  • I don't think it should be called a convenience store, but it is very convenient. And it's not overpriced

  • Ducky. A Kirby fondue pot?

  • Alright, let's get some food!

  • What are you getting today?

  • Today is a workout day, so I think chicken and rice

  • I might go for this today. Inari sushi and soba

  • This one is tororo, so you actually pour in sides and mix it up

  • And I'll be honest with you, I look like I'm talking to myself.

  • Pop it in! M: I can't, because of my hand. I'm barely balancing it. S: Oh sure, okay, I got it I got it.

  • Here we go

  • So we weren't able to get all of these things from the convenience store

  • I have cold soba noodles with inari sushi

  • We got our spray-on sunscreen

  • cause it's starting to get hot outside.

  • Simon got sardines in oil,

  • he got fried rice with chicken

  • He's got these steamed herb chicken breasts. Look at this. It's delicious and it's not even overcooked!

  • I'm trying some new summer tea, and we got ourselves some milk,

  • and I got myself this mozuku seaweed

  • and it looks totally nasty and just - you have to basically brace your mind and tell yourself that it's not

  • disgusting because it tastes so good!

  • Let's eat some food

  • M: So whatcha makin' ducky?

  • I'm just making a quick little stir fry, very easy

  • I got some leftover ham that I don't want to go bad, put a little bit of onion and

  • then that chicken breast and the rice.

  • The rice is a dollar and the chicken breast is two dollars

  • It's like, three dollars and a bit for a pretty solid protein-heavy meal

  • ~*~*PROTEIN*~*~

  • And because I'm working out today, I'm trying to eat a little bit more protein!

  • ~*~*~*PROTEIN*~*~*~

  • Well this rice is already cooked

  • Let me just - get a little bit of oil and crack an egg in there!

  • Mix up eggs so egg yolk explode and coat everything

  • Mayo on top

  • Remember I said this is like my new ranch? Mayo is the new ranch

  • Ranch is so 2008

  • M: Oh, ducky

  • Kewpie mayo is the future.

  • Leftover green onions?

  • Sprinkle that on

  • And I got myself a pre-workout meal

  • ready to go

  • M: I'm trying to figure out how to use this still, I'm sorry!

  • Look at all these bits inside of this little tiny package.

  • What is it all about?

  • First thing you're gonna do is dump the sauce. This is for dipping inside of this little bowl

  • Then you can add wasabi

  • if you like it and toss in these green onions on the side

  • Then this package of water is actually used to kind of rinse the starchiness and

  • stickiness off the noodles so that they separate like so, be delicate!

  • And then you can sprinkle some crunchy nori seaweed on top

  • So this is zaru soba and we're gonna dip the soba - in suppose to be cold.

  • It's got some wasabi and some

  • dashi flavors as usual

  • Yeah (^・ω・^✿)

  • Mmm~

  • Such a light, great meal. But you know,

  • ever since did that video where we learned how to make ni hachi soba

  • I'm - I now understand, like, what a good soba is

  • Like the nuttiness in it?

  • Conveny soba is delicious,

  • but it's more like flour based. S: Mmm

  • Inari sushi, and outside this is uh, tofu skin

  • that's like skimmed off and then deep fried and then they make little pockets

  • *Martina's mhmm's of approval*

  • S: I honestly think - as Martina chews this and she can't talk - what's most impressive about this all

  • is that Martina is doing this with her left hand!

  • She's not naturally left-handed, she usually uses her right hand. M: I'm right handed

  • S: But she's had so much practice -

  • So many dislocated shoulders and like, I guess I've become ambidextrous, really.

  • S: You have! M: You know?

  • S: Like there's a benefit to your disability in which you've learned how to use both hands.

  • You're doing a great job. M: Thanks~

  • S&M: Mmmm, it's so delicious!!! (CC author note: I'm literally just guessing idk japanese lol)

  • Yuh!

  • Hooooly f*ckeroni

  • One of the things that really gets in the way of me enjoying working out, is

  • me forgetting the whole purpose of this

  • I'm trying to be stronger. I'm trying to be healthier

  • But it seems like whenever I look up weightlifting advice online,

  • any YouTube video,

  • they're always really buff dudes that are super shredded

  • And it makes me feel like I'm not doing something right

  • I've been lifting weights for a while, but I'm not nearly as shredded as that!

  • But I know that

  • the people that have those bodies

  • have a very huge lifestyle commitment

  • that would take away from other things that I want to do with Martina

  • I'm not trying

  • to have that kind of body because I won't be able to go out with Martina as much,

  • we won't be able to eat out as much

  • Our lives would be very different.

  • I have to remind myself that

  • I know that women definitely have body image issues more than men do

  • But for me, I gotta remember that these super jacked guys

  • aren't what I'm trying to be.

  • I just want to be a better version of myself and strong for the future

  • That's not to say that I don't feel pressure

  • As Martina's condition changes and develops,

  • I feel very worried that I might not be strong enough in the future to help

  • And that's kind of why I think I have an issue with working out, that I feel like I have to.

  • I feel super uncomfortable if I skip a workout

  • because I don't want to get weak! And even when I'm working out

  • and I feel something in my knees going wrong or some kind of pain, it really scares me because

  • I can't get injured. I've got to make sure that I could continue being

  • as strong as I need to be. And that's a lot of pressure, but

  • I think in this case, it's good. Because it's actually motivating me to be healthy

  • So,

  • take a negative and make a positive out of that. I got another set to go

  • Oh, no. Oh, noooo!

  • Captain's log: May 5th, 2019.

  • Today I want to talk about something a little bit strange

  • I want to talk about the importance of understanding your pain

  • For those of you that don't know,

  • I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which means every day

  • I'm in a lot of pain.

  • Some of you guys are also in a lot of pain every day

  • But some of you guys don't have an illness, but you will naturally hurt yourself at some point

  • You might break an arm, you might pull out your back

  • You're going to inevitably experience some kind of pain.

  • What I want to tell you guys about is the importance of

  • describing the type of pain you have and how helpful it can be to your doctor or your physiotherapists.

  • When you hurt yourself, you've really got to think to yourself what kind of pain you're feeling.

  • For example, something can be a stabby pain.

  • Something that's going like this - it feels like it's kind of like, stabbing at you

  • You can have a shooting pain - a pain that starts on one point and then moves to another part of your body,

  • like it's going up something, moving like that.

  • You can have a throb, which is more something like this.

  • That's how it's hurting, like *whom*

  • *Whom* It's not like a sharp, direct pain

  • All these different things are critically important for your caregiver, whether it be a doctor or the ER nurse or your physiotherapist,

  • to understand what's actually happening in your body.

  • The next time that you guys are actually in pain, to really think about the location of the pain

  • and maybe use some more descriptions when you tell somebody who's trying to help you out.

  • And hopefully they'll be able to get to the root of the problem a lot faster than the stuff that I've gone through

  • But now I'm a pain description expert.

  • It's also EDS Awareness Month

  • So, May is the month for me to spread the awareness of EDS.

  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome has a spectrum of different problems and different things.

  • There's not a lot of funding and research to look into discovering what EDS actually is.

  • You might have heard of some people calling themselves zebras.

  • When doctors hear the sound of hooves,

  • they often assume that it's a horse.

  • But sometimes, it's a zebra. Because zebras also gallop and make that noise as well

  • If I go to the doctor - and this is a very common EDS story - and I told them that I had this pain in my shoulder,

  • or like I had this problem with my knee,

  • they would always do the most basic and easiest answer which was, "You've got growing pains."

  • I was told that I had growing pains all the time

  • I just had growing pains after growing pains

  • When I started dislocating things,

  • everybody thought that it was related to sports.

  • "Oh, I'm just clumsy. Oh, I just have loose joints."

  • But there wasn't really like a Doctor House or somebody who really wanted to dig in and

  • figure it out, like a Sherlock Holmes.

  • Everyone just kind of gave the base answer

  • And that's why I also wanted to talk to you about these descriptions of the pain scales

  • Because some of you guys might have EDS and you might be undiagnosed

  • Hopefully you can maybe be more descriptive with the way you're explaining things,

  • and maybe that will kind of like, clue something into a doctor that, "Hmm. Maybe this isn't what we think it is."

  • "Maybe they do have something different."

  • And hopefully by doing videos that talk about EDS and EDS Awareness Month,

  • we can raise some interest in this,

  • maybe get some funding going on, and I hope that my future EDS people -

  • you know, the people that are younger than me that are growing up now

  • I hope that you guys are gonna have care providers that totally understand what's going on for you

  • I don't think there's gonna be any kind of like, a cure or solve for my EDS in my lifetime

  • But I do really hope that I can pay it forward and help the people that are coming up

  • Cause let me tell you, EDS sucks.

  • But, pushing through, aren't I?

  • And if I can push through and I have EDS,

  • that means if you have EDS, you too can push through

  • I mean, this is an awfully steep slide for a child. S: Yup

  • Have you seen this?

  • S: Is that all just concrete? M: Yeah!

  • M: Is this supposed to be safe?

  • S: I'm not sure, but considering you already f*cked up your hand, let's not go down it

  • M: Uh oh~ uh ohh~

  • S: Ducky, stop scooting your butt! You get back up there missy.

  • M: Uh oh~~ S: Ducky, stop the scooting!

  • S: Ducky, don't be in trouble~ M: It's gonna happen and my skirt's gonna go up

  • S: Yeah, and you know what, it'll be on YouTube! Now I'm gonna show everyone!

  • M: Tada~!

  • I burnt my butt!

  • I can't get up because I only have one hand

  • So, if I use this hand, I'll show everybody my cooter jooter

  • But if I use this hand, it could be broken, so...

  • S: So are you asking me to help you up?

  • M: Yes

  • S: Hey, stop being a bad - holy sh*t that was a steep stair.

  • That was the biggest f*cking stair of my life!

  • S: Okay, watch your hand, girl. M: Jeez louise. Cheese and rice

  • We just came from a walk

  • Our friend Annika came over to the house

  • She's our friend that's visiting from Australia

  • and she also has a chronic illness

  • And so we just walked her to the bus stop and uh - and now we're on our walk together, ducky!

  • S: What do we do on our walks?

  • Mm, we talk about life. S: Mhmm

  • And about how frustrated I get with being sick,

  • and try to find ways to deal with this

  • hand that we've been given!

  • S: But we're doing a good job!

  • M: Yeah! And I think you raised a good point,

  • which was that I'm always really hesitant to hang out with friends because I always feel

  • like I just want to like, push people away like, "I'm fine."

  • I don't want to burden them with my problems

  • You know? I just - I don't want them to be

  • dealing with anything that's difficult in my life because everyone has their own thing going for them, you know?

  • S: Well you don't understand well enough yet, and I can't convince you is that,

  • you're a blessing in many people's lives

  • You're a blessing in my life, and a lot of your friends really like you and are happy to have you as a friend.

  • You're an amazing girl. You need to know that

  • M: I hope I'm not dragging them down. S: No girl

  • But when I'm hanging out with, you know, Annika and she said to me, you know,

  • she also has those frustrated times when she's having like a real body bad day

  • and she just wants to like throw pillows around and - and then I realized like sometimes when you share your

  • embarrassing moments with people and they

  • understand it, you no longer find it embarrassing.

  • You realize that it's something that's normal

  • I felt so much better afterwards

  • And if I hadn't met with a friend today -

  • You know, if I had listened to my brain that's telling me to like, go build a cave - S: And push people away

  • M: You know push people away, if I had done that, if I hadn't built a ladder and said,

  • "Alright," you know, "we're gonna hang out."

  • Then I never would have had this feeling of relief come over me

  • You know? S: Yeah.

  • So even if its like an - even if its reaching out to somebody online

  • You know, or being part of like a chat group or a community of any kind

  • Like rock climbing or whatever it is

  • I think having people to talk to,

  • it's extremely important. S: Yeah. M: You know?

  • S: Good job, girl. M: Yeah

  • S: We're gonna keep doing it, alright? M: Alright

  • S: And next time you become a grumpy gremlin and you don't want to call friends,

  • remember this, I got video evidence now.

  • Well, I'm accidentally gonna delete this memory card

  • *Simon falls* Oh sh*t!

  • I fell off the swing

  • M: You didn't even fake that

  • S: F*ck this, man. I wanna go home

  • M: Oh my god, he didn't even fake that! He literally pretended to get up

  • S: What's happening today, girl?

  • M: Well its um, the end of Golden Week

  • Which means it's beautiful holiday time in Japan and all the stores are shuttered down and everyone's on

  • you know, vacation, and I think I broke my hand!

  • Five days ago I think I broke my hand

  • But I've just been powering through it thinking it was like an EDS injury, because how am I supposed to know the difference?

  • S: Right

  • Um - and, uh -

  • It's just not gonna get - been getting any better

  • And it hurts to even like, put pressure on my finger

  • So, I think I might have broken my wrist actually,

  • but we're not sure yet.

  • M: Fuji Medical thingy -

  • S: Alright! M: Really stairs to a broken bone clinic? That just seems cruel

  • S: You got this, girl!

  • M: *inaudible* Yeah, I'm don't know - I haven't learned any of these terms. I mean I haven't learned pain terms yet. S: All this kanji - No.

  • S: Yeah? M: Yeah. S: Alright, so the verdict is...?

  • Thank God it's not broken.

  • Oh my gosh

  • It looked pretty jank-ass on the screen. Like there looked like I might have

  • maybe subluxed a bone and then brought it back out again, because he's like this kind of gap

  • And he's like looking at this gap, but man does it ever hurt!

  • S: Ducky~

  • It's my most important hand! S: Yeah!

  • I'm gonna have to switch to my left hand to edit

  • S: Alright, we can do this girl. High-five!

  • Falls down the stairs, comes back up again

  • It does seemed kind of cruel that there is a second floor broken bone clinic.

  • S: Well here is the chair that we're supposed to take.

  • Yeah... But I mean if you broke your leg or knee or something

  • You don't wanna... you know

  • S: You got this hot stuff

  • In conclusion, I would say that this week sucked

  • I have very low scores regarding happiness level about what happened this week,

  • but I am very grateful that this is not broken, that it's just good-old EDS

  • I think I almost got shat on!

  • Good-old EDS

  • That is poop! That's a bird, and I almost got- I'm done with this week!

  • I'm done with it!ヽ(*`゚Д´)ノ

  • S: In conclusion, you can't always get what you want, but you could have a good time.

  • Thanks for watching everybody.

  • I nearly got pooped on!

  • S: You sure did!

  • I nearly got pooped on on camera!

  • You heard it, it went *pfft* and then I looked up and looked at a pigeon

  • and went, "this - " Done. I'm done!

  • See you guys in two weeks. S: See ya!

  • S: Whoa~~~~

  • Baby, why'd you move your body?
