  • Okay, This is a conversation that I'm really excited about having because I feel like old folks when they don't know what the young kids were doing.

  • MBA Top shot is basically like trading cards on the digital side, and they're trading highlights.

  • Anyways, we're gonna bring in trade Kirby to talk about it.

  • The host of the No dunks podcast and MBA Twitter's He is actually way more versed, better versed.

  • Then we are.

  • So we're going to get all the information first up.

  • Basic question.

  • What exactly is MBA Top shot?

  • That is the question to ask, and I'm only an expert because I've known about it for a whopping three weeks.

  • Three weeks will make you an expert in the top shot game theory.

  • Easy way to explain it.

  • You nailed it.

  • It's digital trading cards.

  • The complicated way of saying it is that these highlight moments, these top shot moments from your favorite NBA players have been turned into non fungible tokens.

  • NF ts They live on the Blockchain.

  • All of that sounds incredibly confusing, but basically we've got this Blockchain technology it's been around for more than a decade, makes it so you can easily track things like these NF ts These top shot moments there created with different degrees of rarity.

  • It allows collectors then to buy, sell trade gift there moments just like trading cards.

  • It sounds super confusing.

  • So you click into the website.

  • You see how easy it really is.

  • So when we talk about the parallels drawn between playing cards and these video highlights, I think the disconnect is that the playing cards or something tangible and then beyond that we see these numbers just got a skyrocketing.

  • And can you just at least explain how these markets get set for each of these highlights?

  • Yeah, that's Ah, that's definitely a stumbling block for people getting over the tangible aspect of things.

  • But I think that's just a factor of us being old people compared to the youth who are used to just having everything on their phone, right.

  • The thing to me that makes people interested in top shot it's a lot easier.

  • You're not getting your cards graded.

  • You're not having the ship them back and forth.

  • You're not having to wait to see if what you think you're getting is what you're actually getting everything you need to know about each moment that you might be interested in.

  • It's right there on the website who it is, how many of them there are, what serial number you're looking at.

  • You know, it's guaranteed to be authentic in perfect condition every single time, and you get it right away.

  • You hop on the marketplace, you pick out your moment.

  • If you're lucky, you score a path, you pop it open.

  • Either way, it's a matter of seconds until you have your top shot moments rather than days, weeks, months.

  • Maybe if you're trying to get into trading cards.

  • There's also the nostalgia factor, no doubt about it popping a pack of moments.

  • It feels like opening a pack of cards back in the day, but in a new school way.

  • It's kind of a sweet spot for me.

  • In between nostalgia and the future.

  • Gen.

  • Z is watching this right now, saying How do they not know what top shot isn't that everything lives digitally, which is that 1996 to current day age bracket, which is basically the entirety of the N ba?

  • So what I wanna ask you is what player feedback or excitement have you seen drum up with the guys in the league and I would imagine more than a select few players.

  • They're gonna be hyped Thio, obtain their own top shot and get in on this, uh, this new trading phenomenon.

  • Yeah, no doubt about it.

  • It's ah, kind of been surprising, I think, to be getting so much publicity, actually, in the league for top shot this year, we've seen Josh Hart be the first guy who really hopped on the top shot train.

  • But it's also been Tyree's Halliburton.

  • Damian Lee, Terrence Ross, Clint Capela, Taco Fall.

  • All these guys have been tweeting about top shot.

  • I saw that the magic head, Terrence Ross explaining to people what exactly it was on their Twitter account.

  • And then last night, Terry Rozier really up the ante.

  • He was offering up courtside seats to whoever bought one of his very own Terry Rozier jersey moments, saying he'd be able to hang out with you afterwards.

  • Who knows how that's actually gonna go down?

  • But we're seeing the n.

  • F.

  • T s move from a digital thing to also having ah physical component already, and that's in the course of just a month in basically about a month of people finding out about top shot about this n f t kind of go in mainstream.

  • So, yeah, NBA players are certainly getting involved.

  • They're gonna wanna have their moments.

  • It seems like every time they're hopping on the platform, they also want to get their teammates moments.

  • Love to see the support.

  • But it's just a matter of time at this point before one of the big name players in the league says something about it.

  • I guess getting the players involved kind of does make it a little bit more tangible.

  • When you think about that, though, players are involved now.

  • So is getting a top shot moment now.

  • The new clout?

  • I think so.

  • I think it's gonna be even more so whenever Top shot is able to turn around these moments really quickly.

  • We saw Josh Hart played a game last week after he had popped open one of his top shop packs.

  • He hopped on Twitter, had to have been from the locker room, saying, I hope I made a new top shop moment today.

  • I guess we'll see in the future if it happened, but I'm sure that their plan somewhere down the line is to be able to see an incredible moment and turn it into a top shot moment right away.

  • So then that you'll be able to hop on the marketplace and find that right away, you know, they're gonna be releasing some other some Hall of Fame players.

  • Shock is gonna be getting his first moment ever in a running backpack and not too long.

  • And that, to me, is gonna be major.

  • You heard Shack on TNT last night, shouting out, Put it on the top shot.

  • That guy wants to be early.

  • Two things on the Internet.

  • I think he was the very first verified user on Twitter.

  • So whenever Shaq really gets into it, I think that will be another major point in the top shot journey.

  • We love to see it.

  • Thank you so much for schooling us.

  • I feel like I know a little bit more still a little confused, but I feel like I know a little bit more of what's going on right now.

  • Thanks so much, right?

  • Thanks to all for having me.

  • The way I learned.

  • I went and I got a Zach Lavine moment the Bulls air back had to get my Zack.

  • And then I got hooked just like that.

  • It's pretty simple once you really dip into it.

  • Okay, I'll just I'll just spend the money.

  • That's all I gotta do, I guess.

  • Thanks, Trey.

  • All right, so now we're welcoming and Jesse Schwartz at Yodo on Twitter.

  • Jesse made headlines the other day when he paid $208,000 for LeBron James Top shot.

  • Jesse, I'm just gonna ask you this straight up.

  • What the heck does that mean to you?

  • I mean, obviously it means $208,000 worth of something.

  • Yeah.

  • I mean, I've been on top shot since almost the beginning since, like August.

  • So to see it grow over the last few months and then January February to really explode, Um, it just felt like the right time to make a splash.

  • And personally, I mean, I've been a huge LeBron James fan since he came in the league s Oh, there's no one I'd rather bet on.

  • I think he's the greatest athlete of all time and somehow still doesn't get his recognition.

  • So a couple things kick game collection proper.

  • I do want to commend you on that over your shoulder.

  • And secondly, this whole concept of the top shot phenomenon you said you've been in on this game since August.

  • How addictive is it?

  • Is it something that you just find yourself in and absolutely all about from its inception?

  • Yeah.

  • I mean, it's a lot of fun.

  • I mean, I think you can see that as the users are growing and they continue to do astronomical numbers every day.

  • It's like I think you could just see how good the product is and how addictive it is.

  • It's like it's like day trading, meet sports meets fantasy.

  • Um, yes, it's just a lot of fun, Jesse.

  • I need to get an explanation why a pair of Nike shocks are fours are hanging up behind you over your left shoulder.

  • I'm a big fan of that shock sneaker, and then I want to get into my actual question.

  • So why is that behind you right now?

  • Shocks are four is literally my favorite shoe of all time, and I've been a sneaker guy forever.

  • And so I think I have every color those and yeah, I mean you know, to me, art is what you what you wanted to be.

  • So now it's top shots.

  • And before that, it was sneakers.

  • And that's how it's on my wall.

  • The R four's air sick.

  • But going boy anyway.

  • Okay, let me talk to you about top shots.

  • So those are astronomical prices.

  • Six figures for a digital copy of Said Highlight.

  • We're talking about a Zion top shot.

  • Currently market priced at a quarter million dollars.

  • Who values thes?

  • How do you pay prices for these?

  • Who gets that payment?

  • And how does one get into, um, dipping their toe in the water That doesn't have you know, $100,000 to spend on a top shot.

  • I know I threw a lot of questions.

  • They're actually, but if we can sift through them, I think I think the beauty of it is there's really moments at every price point.

  • Um, obviously, the $208,000 purchase wasn't the first thing that that we did.

  • And, like I have been on for months, kind of making smaller purchases, selling some stuff, re buying back in on.

  • I think that's the beauty of it.

  • Anyone can come on.

  • And by a a $1 moment.

  • 200,000.

  • So all right, So this is the probably the most important question that will ask you today.

  • What do you think about this moment?

  • How much do you think this would go for the LeBron?

  • No.

  • Wait for it.

  • This one.

  • Oh, Gary E wouldn't know That was up there.

  • I would have bought the Oh, yeah.

  • Textbook charged.

  • Take right there.

  • Height guy extraordinaire.

  • You got the headband going.

  • I like it.

  • Eso How much do you think that would value at?

  • Just like don't make it would definitely break the record.

  • I don't want to throw any numbers out.

  • You know, if you wanna DME, we'll figure something out.

  • Gas him.

  • They would pay people take perfect.

  • Perfect, I guess this man thanks so much, Jesse for joining us today and giving us a little insight on top shot.

  • Thank you guys.

  • Thanks for watching ESPN on YouTube for live streaming sports and premium content.
