  • That factor into today's special edition of CNN 10 will be explaining all of that in a couple minutes.

  • Welcome to everyone watching worldwide.

  • I'm Coral Jesus.

  • 20 is the amendment to the U.

  • S.

  • Constitution that sets January.

  • 20th is the date when new or re elected US presidents are inaugurated and when the terms of their predecessors end.

  • It's also the Constitution that includes the 35 words of the president's oath of office.

  • Chief Justice John Roberts led new President Joe Biden in those words yesterday.

  • I, Joseph Robinette Biden Junior do solemnly swear I, Joseph Robinette Biden Junior do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States Office of President of the United States and will, to the best of my ability will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States Constitution of the United States.

  • So help you God, so help me.

  • God 46 is the second number I mentioned at the beginning of today's show with his oath of office Joseph R.

  • Biden Jr officially became America's 46th president, but he's not the 46th person to hold the job.

  • Grover Cleveland served as both the 22nd president and the 24th president because the two terms he served in the late 18 hundreds were not back to back.

  • He lost the election in between them to President Benjamin Harrison.

  • So Mr Biden is the 46th president, but the 45th individual to serve in the role.

  • And that role began yesterday with his plan to sign 17 executive actions.

  • These air orders for members of the executive branch.

  • They don't usually affect as many people as the laws Congress passes, but they do establish presidential policy.

  • President Biden's new executive actions concerned the coronavirus pandemic, the environment, immigration and government regulations.

  • Some of them undo the actions signed by former President Donald Trump.

  • Some of them returned to policies set by former President Barack Obama when Biden served as vice president.

  • And that brings us to another numerical term I mentioned first.

  • There's more than one first concerning this presidency.

  • At age 78 when he took the oath of office, president Biden became the oldest American ever to assume the role, and Vice President Kamala Harris has made history.

  • Her mother was Indian and her father is Jamaican, So Mrs Harris is both the first woman and the first woman of color to become U.

  • S vice president.

  • The first day for new leaders is usually a busy one.

  • Lots of ceremonies, lots of greetings.

  • But there was no traditional parade to the White House from the capital, and there was no inaugural ball this time around because of coronavirus concerns.

  • Virtual and televised events helped mark the transition of power in the United States.

  • Americans got a glimpse of the new president's vision for the country and is outlined for the next four years in his inaugural speech.

  • Here's some highlights today we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but because because of democracy, the people, the will of the people has been heard and the will of the people has been heated.

  • We've learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile, and at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.

  • So now, on this hallowed ground, we're just a few days ago, violence sought to shake the capital's very foundation.

  • We come together as one nation under God, indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power.

  • As we have for more than two centuries.

  • This is a great nation.

  • Were good people and over the centuries, through storm and strife, in peace and in war.

  • We've come so far.

  • But we still have far to go.

  • Yeah, will press forward with speed and urgency, for we have much to do in this winter of peril and significant possibilities, much to repair, much to restore, much to heal, much to build and much to gain.

  • Few people our nation's history have been mawr challenged were found a time or challenging or difficult than the time we're in now.

  • Once in a century, virus that silently stalks the country is taken as many lives.

  • In one year as America lost in all of World War two, millions of jobs have been lost.

  • Hundreds of thousands of businesses closed a cry for racial justice.

  • Some 400 years in the making moves us.

  • This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge and unity is the path forward, and we must meet this moment as the United States of America.

  • If we do that I guarantee you we will not fail away those who supported our campaign.

  • I'm humbled by the faith you place in us to all those who did not support us.

  • Let me say this.

  • Hear me out.

  • As we move forward, take a measure of me and my heart.

  • If you still disagree, so be it.

  • That's democracy.

  • That's America.

  • The right to dissent.

  • Peaceably in the guard rails of our republic is perhaps this nation's greatest strength.

  • I understand that many of my fellow Americans view the future most fear and trepidation.

  • I understand they worry about their jobs.

  • I understand.

  • Like my dad.

  • They lay in bed staring at the night, staring at the ceiling, wondering kind of keep my health care kind of pay my mortgage, thinking about their families about what comes next.

  • I promise you, I get it okay.

  • But the answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don't look like look like you or worship the way you do or don't get their news from the same sources you dio.

  • We must end this uncivil war.

  • The pits red against blue, rural versus Ireland, rural versus urban conservative versus liberal.

  • We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts.

  • If we show a little tolerance and humility together, we shall write an American story of hope, not fear of unity, not division of light, not darkness.

  • A story of decency and dignity, love and healing, greatness and goodness.

  • May this be the story that guides us the story that inspires us, and the story that tells age is yet to come that we answered the call of history.

  • May God bless America and may God protect our troops.
