Hi, I'm Pip. I'm a penguin.
I'm his best flamingo friend Freddy.
We're junior fliers at T.O.T.S.
Our friend Casey is a koala.
She knows a ton about baby animals.
Today she's going to tell us about...
( drumroll )
Both: Baby purple martins.
Casey: Thanks, Pip and Freddy.
- ( chirping ) - Can you guess what's making
that chirping sound?
That's right, it's a bird!
These birds are baby purple martins.
Baby purple martins are called chicks.
These chicks are born pink, but after a few days
their skin color changes to purple
and their feathers begin to grow.
With all the insects their parents feed to them,
these chicks grow amazingly fast
and will become three times bigger
just a few days after being born.
Grown-up male and female purple martins
look very different from each other.
Female purple martins have white bellies
and brown feathers with a little bit
of purple on their backs.
Male purple martins have black feathers
that give off a purple color when the light is just right.
Purple martins are a special kind of bird that migrates.
This means they travel from one place to another
during certain times of the year.
Disney's Animal Science And Environment conservation team
works hard to clean and prep
all the purple martin birdhouses,
just like I care for the animals
in the nursery at T.O.T.S.
They help the purple martins and their chicks
by providing them with comfortable nesting areas
to lay their eggs and raise their chicks.
Even if you don't have purple martins near you,
you can still help native wildlife by creating habitats
such as planting trees or gardens
in your own neighborhood.
