So today we're going to be looking at the two of these sounds and hopefully getting the difference to make your life a little bit easier when you speak English.

And today yes, we are looking at the on the O sound.

Now a quick disclaimer before we begin the lesson.

As always, I am a British pronunciation teacher on I specialized in just one off many English accents you can choose which ever accent you want.

None of them are inferior back to the lesson.

So what actually made me decide to do this lesson about the on the oh sounds?

But it was actually one of my students.

He was sending me one of his daily WHATS app messages, which is included in my pronunciation cause on one thing that slightly concerned me is that he was talking about he was in a bar with one of his friends, and he said When I went to the bar, I ordered a rum and cock.

That's right, a rum on dcaa cock.

Now the issue is he didn't use the O sound on.

Now what he's done is he has ordered a rum with a side of cock.

Obviously, what my student intended to say was rum on coke.

So we just need to get the difference between the O on the oh, sounds and just learn a few words which we can compare them with.

So, firstly, the awe sounds you'll notice first from my mouth shape.

Oh, I'm doing a kind of round shape with my mouth.

Okay.

Oh, so this sound is what we would call a back open vowel so back, meaning that the tongue is towards the back of the mouth and the sound is coming from the back of the mouth on open, meaning that the mouth is quite open.

So that would indicate that the tongue is down because when we lift the tongue up, the mouth will usually close mawr on.

When we push the tongue down, it will usually open mawr.

So pull the tongue slightly back into the mouth on round the mouth or Oh, oh, I feel your tongue sliding back into your mouth when you produce this sound.

So let's try it with a word.

Hot hot.

So start with that hearts.

Now let's compare it with the O sound.

Now the O sound is what we would call a diff thong.

A diff thong is when we combine two vowels together.

So the sound is Oh, okay.

For example.

Go Oh, or only only So we're starting with the tongue in the middle area of the mouth.

The mouth is kind of neutral.

Okay, uh, on then what we're doing is we're rounding the mouth and closing it slightly.

So this means we're lifting the tongue kind of diagonally up and back on.

This is going to cause the mouth to round and close slightly, so oh, feel your mouth round as your tongue lifts up and back.

Uh oh.

So now let's try only only hopefully you can pronounce the awe and oh, sounds let's quickly compare them with those two magic words.

Cock on Coke cock.

Co cop Co Kok Kok.

If you're still pronouncing the word coke as cock, I'm sorry.

You might just have to change your favorite drink to a lemonade or something much easier to pronounce.

Now, what we're going to do is we're going to start some minimal pairs.

So some words which include both of these sounds on sound similar.

Hop up.

Remember that Hop, Aunt Ho Hop Hope a Oh, hope.

Hope not, Andi Note.

Note not Note.

Got so again.

Round shaped tongue down and back.

Oh, got and go to remember starting like this.

Go on.

We're rounding the mouth.

Goat got goat baht like a robot.

Andi.

Boat bots, boats.

The other thing to know about, def thongs is they're kind of in the middle of a long vowel and a short vowel, So don't make them too long.

Don't make them too short.

They're kind of just sitting in the middle.

So got goat got goat.

00 Now we're going to try some sentences.

Just toe.

Practice them and see how we can do.

So We hope toe hop on the boat.

We hope to hop on the boat.

I mean, this lesson is quite simple to explain, but it's all about practice.

Try and find some more minimal pairs.

Try and find some more words with the AAT sound and the O sound.

Compare them, create your own sentences and start building your vocabulary with these new sounds.
