  • All right guys, welcome!

  • Oh, the light's not on.

  • Welcome to another episode of TwoSet Violin.

  • It's been a chaotic morning.

  • There was a huge bug outside.

  • I just couldn't get in.

  • And um, Discord was playing up.

  • But we finally got it working,

  • and now there are people that are waiting.

  • So what we're gonna do is jump straight into it,

  • - and ask these guys questions, - Mhmm.

  • have a chat with all you guys.

  • And we're also gonna do

  • a quick instrument tour at the very end.

  • So you get 2 in 1!

  • (Alright!)

  • - Hello. - You're first.

  • (My question is,

  • how do you balance between work and life?

  • Because we feel like you guys are very busy,

  • and have a tight schedule.

  • And I think that you guys

  • like, make videos on a daily basis. So I think,

  • sometimes we think that you guys should take a break.)

  • I mean, I think it's a little bit cliché,

  • but I think that, you know that quote when it's like,

  • "If you find something you love for work, then...

  • - It doesn't feel like work," type of thing. - It's not... Yeah.

  • I guess if we come across tired in some videos...

  • Yeah, that might be true.

  • Maybe we need to...

  • ...sleep earlier, exercise a bit more.

  • - But... - (Yeah.)

  • Don't worry, we're very very happy doing what we do.

  • (So, from a young age

  • did you guys always want to be some kind of musician?)

  • Uhhh.... Oof.

  • - We decided when we were like, - Yeah.

  • - 16, 17, actually. Yeah. - Yeah, we procrastinated. - (Ah.)

  • (So did your parents like,

  • push you guys to follow your dreams or were they like,

  • just like the traditional Asian parents that are like,

  • "you need to become doctor?")

  • Yeah, doctor.

  • Yeah, doctor.

  • (Are they proud of you guys now?

  • Would you say?)

  • Yeah.

  • I would say so.

  • I hope so!

  • (What is a great piece or the best...

  • It is to...

  • ...practice 40 hours a day

  • and follow the way of Ling Ling.

  • Yeah, I would say so.

  • Actually, it's not actually advice per se, in the sense that

  • it's more seeing how great musicians practice.

  • The effect,

  • the kind of advice that I basically got from that was...

  • I don't know. How about you?

  • Slow practice.

  • Yeah!

  • - Simp Sibelius! - (Is it coming?)

  • (Yes!)

  • (What is the best compliment you have ever received?)

  • Oof.

  • Whoa.

  • - Just the silent look of approval from my teacher. - I was thinking that!

  • I was thinking that!

  • The teacher goes, just nods like, "Mmm."

  • You know that feeling when they just

  • - don't roast you for once - Yeah.

  • - after playing through the piece? - Yeah. - (Yeah.)

  • (What is an instrument that you don't play,

  • but you wish you knew how to?)

  • - Ooh. - Bass.

  • Jokes!

  • I wish I could play one of every family.

  • - Yeah. - Like one wind instrument, - (Mmm.)

  • one brass, one percussion.

  • I wish I could play piano better.

  • - Oh yeah. I... - (Oh, I'm piano gang.)

  • - Yeah. Piano gang, piano gang. - Piano gang. Yeah.

  • - And maybe some like, folk instruments or like, - (That's funny.)

  • traditional instruments would be cool.

  • - Like the guzheng. - Oh, that would be cool. - (Oh yeah.)

  • (Um, so sometimes like,

  • in the back of your like TikTok stuff like that,

  • like we can see like a guitar in Brett's house.)

  • (Um, do you like actually play guitar?

  • And like, what's your favorite piece on it,

  • if you played guitar before?)

  • Wonderwall.

  • I'd forgotten the guitar was there

  • until you guys mentioned it.

  • Why do you even have a guitar?

  • Yeah, why do I have a guitar?

  • Well...

  • Actually, my father played guitar a long time ago.

  • - Oh, no way. I didn't even know that. - And then...

  • Yeah, and then he just, "Well, I'll get a guitar,"

  • but of course he doesn't practice.

  • And so I don't play guitar.

  • But it's the room where I kinda, practice and stuff,

  • - and the instruments are there, hey. - Mmm.

  • (When it comes to practicing, or anything,

  • um, which composer is kind of like,

  • your greatest inspiration?

  • I'll answer that. I enjoy practicing Bach.

  • Musically aside, like, violin technique-wise...

  • - Actually, yeah, yeah. I'd agree. I'd agree. - ...you develop so many different types of skills.

  • And nuanced skills that you don't really develop elsewhere.

  • - I feel. - Yeah.

  • Because it's so subtle, and nuanced.

  • And the tone, the phrasing.

  • (both) Musically.

  • The bowing techniques you need.

  • - The intonation you have to kinda hit. - Yeah.

  • I feel like practicing Bach has

  • taught me a lot about violin playing.

  • (My friend wanted me to ask you,

  • what is your favorite bubble tea flavor?)

  • So for the longest time my answer to that was,

  • has always been, original.

  • - Go original. - Yeah.

  • None of this

  • taro, none of this

  • matcha, like bougie...

  • It's like, if you truly appreciate bubble tea,

  • you go to the core. And that used to be my answer.

  • But!

  • Then came along

  • - black sugar bubble tea. Brown sugar, brown sugar. - Brown sugar.

  • And also the cheese one.

  • If it's done really well, it's pretty epic.

  • - It's gonna be the cause of my diabetes, I swear. - I know. It's not healthy, but ...

  • All in moderation.

  • - (Whoa!!) - (Wow!)

  • - Whoooa! - (Hi!)

  • - Oh, it's 2 for 1! - (Hi!)

  • - Oh, nice! 2 for 1 here as well. - (Yeah.)

  • (So, I'm applying to music schools in the fall.)

  • (both) Oh, nice!

  • (Yeah, I wanted to ask you guys

  • if you had any tips about preparing for auditions.)

  • Definitely preparation is...

  • ...one of the most important things you can do.

  • For myself, if I was really really like,

  • super serious about an upcoming goal,

  • I would actually try to break it down methodically

  • and kind of plan out like, milstones leading up.

  • You know, every week, like...

  • You kinda work your way back, right?

  • - It's like, if I need to have - (Yeah.)

  • everything perfect by then, you know,

  • give yourself a 2-week buffer.

  • So you wanna aim to have things prepared

  • by the last 2 weeks.

  • So the last 2 weeks ideally you're kind of just

  • going through and being able to perform everything.

  • - Practice is such a slow process. - Yeah.

  • - We don't really see the results until like, months later. - Yeah.

  • And so it's, that's often actually the most difficult part,

  • to have the patience to go through it.

  • Lucky last!

  • Hi!

  • (Russia.)

  • - Oh, Russia! - Oh, hello! Hello.

  • (You both played violin, Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto?)

  • (So my question is,

  • if you had a chance to go back in time

  • and meet Tchaikovsky,

  • what would you say to him?)

  • Brett, you did the Tchaik.

  • 2 mil. What would you say to him?

  • Um...

  • I don't know how to say it.

  • - I love Tchaikovsky, actually. - Yeah.

  • - Just, I love the Russian composers. - (Same.)

  • - Actually. Russian composers are really like... - Yeahh, yeah.

  • Oh, they're so good.

  • You guys got the Romantic, like BANG,

  • - Yeah. - Oh, you guys got it down.

  • I don't know if I can think of one thing,

  • but I would love to like...

  • ...just have a conversation.

  • And I would love to hear

  • what kind of person he was in real life.

  • Yeah, I'd love to just have bubble tea with him.

  • - Or coffee, or tea. Whatever he has. - Yeah. Yeah.

  • - Have chai coffee! - Yeah, Tchaicoffee!

  • I love the way you pronounce Tchaikovsky, by the way.

  • - Yeah, how do you say it? In Russian? - Like, properly.

  • (Mmm, I say it "Tchai-kohv-sky.")

  • (Both) "Tchai-kohv-sky."

  • - My very first proper violin teacher was Russian. - Yeah.

  • - He was from St. Petersburg. - (Oh.)

  • - And I remember one - - (Did you learn "dasvidanya" from him?)

  • Yeah yeah yeah yeah! That was from him.

  • I would just hear him like, speak Russian with his wife.

  • And that was the one word that I remembered.

  • (Both) "Dasvidanya."

  • All right, that's it guys!

  • There you go. The promised 2 mil sub call.

  • Little bit late.

  • - It's been 2.5, 2.6 mil subs. - Yes. Yeah, it's a little bit late.

  • But!

  • I'm glad we could talk to you guys.

  • It's crazy how everyone is from different parts of the world.

  • 2 in 1, because last time we said if this video hits 100k,

  • we will do draw my life, call fans,

  • and instrument tour.

  • - I know it's such a good package. - Yes.

  • Very good, good value.

  • - And uh, you guys actually hit 100k. - I know. It's crazy. You guys did it.

  • - So we're gonna also - - And in one day as well.

  • - Yeah, in one day. - In one day. I was like,

  • Whoa!!

  • So we're gonna throw in

  • a really quick instrument tour, because to be honest,

  • there's not that much to talk about.

  • - Yes. - We have the recorder.

  • Yes.

  • We have a triangle.

  • We have this bass that we've been using for

  • this war that you guys have probably been seeing,

  • but actually,

  • it's not our bass. It is, um...

  • You guys know Shaun, right? From our videos.

  • - Producer Shaun! Producer Shaun's bass. - Producer Shaun.

  • He kindly lent it to us.

  • There's guitar, back at Brett's.

  • Eddy: There's the piano, here.

  • Eddy: Yeah yeah.

  • Eddy: Oh, yeah. The very best.

  • - Brett: Oh, it doesn't do the... - Eddy: The superior instrument of them all.

  • - Brett: Ta-da!! - Eddy: The vio...

  • Eddy: ...la! Sike!

  • Eddy: Viola!

  • Eddy: Viola gang!

  • (both) Just kidding.

  • Eddy: Respect all instruments.

  • Eddy: That's my old violin there.

  • Eddy: This is my new violin.

  • Brett: And this is my violin.

  • Eddy: All right, that's it. That's the instrument tour.

  • Don't forget to like and subscribe.

  • Accent the like button.

  • And we'll see you next time.

  • Bye-bye!

All right guys, welcome!
