  • Now when you think about sushi

  • you probably think about some of the more iconic

  • pieces like tuna or even unagi

  • But in Japan they have lots of different kinds of sushi

  • some weirder pieces, more experimental pieces

  • and some that are actually really quite common here

  • So today we're gonna show you some of the pieces that

  • you might not have thought of

  • when you think about Japanese sushi

  • M: but they're super Oishī (jp. delicious)

  • I wanna ask you a question, though.

  • What's up with all these plates. Did the video just start?

  • S: Oh.. you see, before we do our videos.

  • We do a lot of research, alright, so this is our..

  • our research, our prep work, alright R&D.

  • This is our location scouting. We take our job seriously

  • Let's talk about a little bit of beef

  • I'm sure that's not the thing that you expected

  • somebody to be able to order at a sushi restaurant

  • And I'll be honest, I never would have touched this piece

  • If one of my friends living here doesn't eat fish.

  • It's freaking delicious

  • Don't miss out on beef with tasty sauce.

  • S: There it comes!

  • M: The sauce is gonna be tasty

  • Oh, we forgot that by two we meant like

  • two..

  • S: One for me one for you

  • S: I'm okay with that

  • M: and you know what it's not like great looking sushi so

  • S: how dare you this shit is gorgeous, don't listen to her

  • beef sauce

  • M: Which one do I want? I'm gonna take this one. Okay

  • So the reason why this is such a hit is because

  • vinegared rice works really well with like fatty fishes

  • It's kind of like having like a lemon to a fatty fish, right?

  • This beef is so oily because it's Japanese beef and in the

  • sauce from there soaks on down to the vinegared rice

  • and then you just have this little tasty.. nugget of magic

  • Come on...it's like the equivalent of Christmastime

  • when you have a good piece of bread

  • and you dip it in that gravy at the end

  • S: Uuuuuh M: so when you bite into it.. it's soft

  • and squishy.. S: Oh, man that's my favorite thing to do..

  • M: I know I know.. but it still kinda holds in together S: cleaning plates with bread.. ahh

  • M: yeah.. do you want your piece? S: I got my own plate girl. What are you talking about?

  • M: I'm gonna put it into your mouth S: Oh feed it to me

  • S: It's great M: It's yummy right?

  • To beef is sweet, the sauce is a little bit tart,

  • got some fattiness from the meat

  • Nice.. just have the rice absorbing all that

  • I know you wouldn't think about having beef

  • at a sushi restaurant in Japan

  • Just try it. You might not think it's authentic

  • but it's really good

  • Now you guys might call this conveyor belt sushi,

  • at least we did when we were in Toronto

  • but in Japan it's called 'Kaiten Sushi',

  • which literally just means like.. rotation and sushi

  • And the inventor of it was actually from Osaka

  • and he got the idea when he saw beer conveyor belts

  • inside of a warehouse.

  • So he saw this beer tour and he was like..

  • "Well, I'm a sushi chef.

  • Why don't I try building one of these?"

  • And he spent 5 years to try to build it with the

  • right speed. 1958 is the very first time one opened up

  • and they've been in Japan ever since and I think

  • it came to us in like.. 2000 (laughing)

  • S: right.. (laughing) M: The first time it opened up in our city we were like

  • this is amazing S: Oh my god I can't believe it

  • M: We couldn't get in

  • There's also lots of seasonal and limited edition items

  • that are only around

  • during the winter or the summer or the spring

  • So make sure you peruse the menu.

  • This one was super duper nice

  • 'sea urchin and shiso leaf' in a little handroll

  • Oh my gosh, and 'Gunkans' I didn't

  • even know what these were when I first came to Japan

  • It's basically just rice that has roasted seaweed around

  • and it's just filled with magical little goodies

  • S: Alright, eel and egg

  • M: U.. Unagi and soft boiled eggs,

  • that seems like a win to me, don't you think?

  • S: Who knows?!

  • M: Here they come.. S: Yeah.. boy.. woooow

  • (foodporn voiceover) Oh my god what a saucy surprise you are

  • I certainly hope you're listening to this with headphones

  • on because.. Mhhmm

  • Look at that ooey gooey sweet 'tare'.. just coating those

  • super lush eggs and crispy unagi.. Mhhhmm

  • S: Now this is eel with soft boiled egg.

  • It's a piece that we've never had before

  • because one of the things we really love about these

  • sushi shops is that there's so many things

  • that are seasonal. What we're getting here now,

  • we might not be able to get next month.

  • And what's available next month won't be available

  • the month after that. So try a different piece

  • that you might not be expecting. Don't come into a sushi

  • place with preconceived notions of what you should eat

  • Just be open to whatever is available M: Go crazy!

  • Was it a good idea? S: Mhmmm

  • M: I think it was gonna be a real good idea. Right? And you love Unagi

  • S: fattiness and creaminess is always a good topping

  • on vinegar rice. You need that balance between

  • vinegary and creamy, vinegary and fat.

  • This is a great piece for it

  • The beef piece is a great piece for it,

  • fatty fish and this too. Would you like this piece love?

  • M: Yeah S: I'm gonna feed it to you lovingly

  • (wedding music)

  • M: Ehm.. Don't you 'ehm' at me girl you accept my romances

  • M: There's a reason why I need to 'ehm' it though S: Why?

  • M: Cause I'm wearing lipstick

  • and girls know how to eat food with lipstick

  • But you're just gonna take that piece

  • and mash it all over my face

  • S: I might

  • M: Ehm.. so thank you. I'll imagine in my

  • heart of hearts that you're feeding this to me lovingly

  • It becomes so sticky and luscious... it turns into like a

  • TKG (Tomago kake gohan) in your mouth.

  • S: Yes... Uhh

  • This is like an unusual piece.

  • That actually got better the more you chewed it.

  • S: it's true yeah M: it whipped up the egg, mixed it up in your mouth..

  • and then you have a little crunchy bits of the..

  • toasted Unagi

  • Ok I'm gonna nerd out for a bit and talk about salmon

  • when I was in Toronto, I always

  • equated salmon pieces with Japanese sushi

  • and I always imagined coming here

  • and having some great salmon.

  • However, salmon isn't really..

  • authentic when it comes to Japanese sushi

  • it's only really been around since the 80s because

  • Japan doesn't fish its own salmon when it comes

  • for raw fish. They get it from Norway

  • so all of these salmon pieces that you're gonna get here

  • in Japan are actually... Norwegian salmon

  • That doesn't mean that it's not really popular here. I think

  • salmon is like the most popular topping that you get

  • on rice in Japan all together. So raw salmon isn't just a

  • Japanese thing. This is a nice little fusion food

  • of Norwegian salmon and Japanese rice.

  • M: Oh, no soy sauce or wasabi.. you're just going in dry?

  • (Martina laughing)

  • M: Do you need a glass of water

  • M: Oh my god ducky.. (laughing) S: It's not my favorite piece

  • M: no.. (laughing) S: I'm never really happy eating salmon pieces

  • here in Japan I think of it kind of like the California roll, right?

  • California rolls are delicious!

  • I've never actually seen California rolls in Japan

  • Salmon? Not my number one thing to get

  • M: But.. S: But..

  • M: salmon in Norway is amazing. S: Yes, Norwegian salmon itself is really yummy.

  • M: it's amazing S: we love it.. it's really yummy

  • M: There's just something about.. S: Just..

  • M: don't know what it is S: there are better things to put on your rice and a piece of raw salmon

  • M: Absolutely too much wasabi S: Absolutely! Absolutely too much wasabi!

  • M: Oh no.. it came back for more

  • This is like

  • in one of those.. TV shows

  • and we.. I've eaten so many wasabi ball hidden in things S: girl.. you gonked that on

  • it was like a line of toothpaste you put on there girl. M: It was.. oh my god

  • There's a lingering burn of wasabi happening and ehm..

  • just like the old folks tales your parents will tell you

  • Everyone always tells you something different

  • on how to get rid of wasabi burn

  • They're like 'you gotta open up your mouth and

  • breathe in through your nose'

  • I don't think anyone knows what they're talking about.

  • I think it's just.. like brain freeze

  • You just got to get through the brain freeze you know

  • S: You just gotta suffer

  • M: Yeah.. in a completely unrelated note to salmon.

  • I would say don't order the salmon, but instead

  • order the scallop. It's called Hokkaido scallop

  • in this case and other times it might be like

  • Hoe-tah-tay in Japanese

  • I don't really think I was that into eating raw scallops

  • when I was growing up in Canada

  • S: Of course.. no M: Like I I just don't think I would ever even

  • order a scallop or think about ordering a scallop

  • and that was like rich people food

  • if they had scallops on their things

  • Shit mine's so heavy it fell over

  • It's super sweet. It's super smooth. There's no tendon.

  • There's no scaliness. There's no crunchy bits

  • It's like the ocean's marshmallow

  • I've definitely had like bad salmon that I didn't like,

  • but I've never never had a bad scallop

  • Sushi shop sushi shop

  • sushi shop has got a really angry baby.

  • Unhappy baby.

  • It's so cold, but it's always a really

  • refreshing and cold piece and when you bite into it

  • There's no resistance

  • It's exactly like when you eat really good tuna

  • and it's super soft, just melts in your mouth like butter

  • I would say this is the shell version of that.

  • What do you call those?

  • It's not rocks No, so what are these called shellfish? Thank you.

  • Can I eat yours and get another?

  • It's great I'm always happy whenever I have scallops

  • I'm sometimes happy when I have salmon

  • scallops if you haven't tried them yet

  • You must have them with your sushi.

  • Skip the salmon go right to the hotates, lovely snot rock

  • well they're not the most visually appealing when you

  • look at them from the outside. All seafood is ugly,

  • let's be honest, ain't no good looking fish.

  • All seafood is is monstrous.

  • They all look like demons floating in liquid

  • Chucky I know that we all think this

  • but you're not supposed to say that out loud. Sorry

  • We don't judge the ocean that way

  • don't judge the ocean

  • We all know that mermaid are literally a creation of fairy

  • tales in order to get people to come visit the ocean

  • They're like dang how we going to get people to the ocean?
