which shows the growth in, per capita GDP since 1947,

is it looks like something interesting happens

where from 1947, at least till about the late '60s,

it looks like the after-tax income of the bottom 90%

or even growing a little bit faster than per capita GDP.

And then as we go into the '70s and '80s,

it looks like the slope of the bottom 90%

And visually, it looks like the two percentages,

And one of the questions we asked ourselves is,

Down here, they're both growing at around that rate,

at a higher rate than the after-tax income

is maybe it has something to do with tax policy.

And so that's what we're gonna focus on in this video.

So the way that you could think about this,

is in 1950, those from the zero to the tenth percentile,

had a tax rate of a little bit more than 50%,

And what's interesting about this graphic is,

but they're still paying a higher percentage

But what we see, as we move from 1980 forward,

are actually paying a lower effective tax rate

are more sophisticated at being able to find tax shelters,

that a disproportionate amount of their income

Or you have changes in things like the estate tax,

and see how things have trended till today.

And what you see is a general flattening of the curve

is not only paying a lower effective tax rate

than folks in the 99th or the 99.99th percentile,

but they're paying a lower effective tax rate

is that a disproportionate amount of their income
