  • I'm David Hoffman, filmmaker, and you're about to see a film made in 1939.

  • It was made by a group of Christian churches really cared about what was happening to a lot of people that really weren't benefiting from the rising economy at that time.

  • 1939 2 years before World War Two and a dozen years or so after the Depression.

  • But many people was still experiencing the Depression, So these churches get together and they make this film, which is silent.

  • I've added music.

  • They usedto have live music playing piano as they played.

  • This in church is asking for people's support, and I'm fascinated by the issues looked at and by the quality of the film.

  • This is beautiful documentary work from that time, so they look at poor housing.

  • They look a migrant workers.

  • They look at Children and poverty.

  • They look at segregation, they look at alcohol and drugs and they look at gambling and they look at delinquency incredible.

  • They really want.

  • And they believe the parishioners will do something to help these people.

  • And in a way, in America we still have these people, and I'm gonna sure America's churches are doing this kind of documentary anymore.

  • But I find this very touching and quite beautiful.

  • The title is even in this day and age.

  • What a great title.

  • I really appreciate the people who made this long gone.
