  • Hello subscribers and others.

  • It's David Hoffman, and you're about to see a series of clips I put together on the generation gap.

  • As you know, I'm really interested in the 19 fifties and the 19 sixties, the time I grew up on also because in 1989 I got a chance to make a television series on the 19 sixties called Making Sense of the Sixties.

  • So these films were made in the early sixties.

  • I was a cameraman.

  • I didn't actually edit this, and what you're going to see is the generation gap.

  • What's the generation gap?

  • Well, there was a generation gap, and it involved everything.

  • I mean, the young people separated from the previous generation fashion, music style, language, what they liked, what their values were, work in the workplace, family life.

  • I know how many of you are now upset with the results, and there's a lot to be upset about.

  • It didn't go perfectly for sure, and there's a lot of problems because of it.

  • But this generation gap really existed at that time, and you're going to see this in his clips.

  • Some of the stuff that people felt of the different generations.

  • Just remember Bob Dylan's comment at the time.

  • I don't trust anyone over 30 Now you might ask yourself today, Do we have a generation gap?

  • I think we do.

  • I'm watching it on YouTube.

  • The current generations are called digital natives.

  • They will born in the digital era.

  • And they are, in my view, very, very different from the generations that came before, even in the way that they think.

  • I don't know how you feel about that, but as a millennial or younger.

  • How different do you feel you are from the generation that raised you that then the generation before that My generation, your grand parents, When you get done, tell me what you think.

  • I'd be really interested.

  • Is there a generation gap today?

  • And is it kind of the same is what you're hearing and seeing in these video clips eyes real quiet.

  • And how do you know I'm very close but never talked to my student.

  • When you go to a party, you don't tell him exactly what happened because I really get mad.

  • Start telling you how you're so bad and everything like that just getting with me.

  • A parent's relieves a lot of pressure this track not necessarily bad, but they're more distracting.

  • And, uh, most Children do pardon a lot of, and as a result, right?

  • Probably the influence of the parent is somewhat deluded.

  • You just know you know you don't have the money or control for much is perhaps, when I was high school almost every night.

  • There's a meeting of this crop for that crap for Why Has something, or the church basketball?

  • Here's cheerleading practice there.

  • Speech tournament.

  • Is all of this sort of thing going on constantly?

  • My parents are.

  • I killed him.

  • I didn't go to college.

  • Your parents are constantly asking you what colleges you want to go to.

  • And if you offer a suggestion of a college, it isn't an Ivy League category.

  • They say, Well, why not?

  • However, why not Yale?

  • Ever since about the seventh grade, you've been hearing it every day, just drummed into year after year after year, and I think most kids don't take it too seriously until they actually get into the position where it's time to file applications and everything else.

  • And then, especially during senior year, the kids around me, it's off.

  • People just no upset all the time.

  • I'm sure not knowing where they go If I could just throw it through a wall some ties because, Well, I am very materialistic.

  • And I think that is a very materialistic world.

  • You know?

  • What is the materialistic world?

  • You've got it Sort of be a little bit detached, too.

  • Because how are you ever going to toe to know what you really think and what you really want and believe in a couple of days?

  • Um, find out my something it takes.

  • So it takes so long to find out what your something really is.

  • You know, you just keep going and going and going.

  • And you think, Well, my something will be here soon or lady home.

  • And, uh, it's really, really pretty good.

  • Have a good you have a good time way get out of college.

  • So what you gonna do?

  • You don't know?

  • You've got the army, you've got job choices.

  • You could go to graduate school.

  • But what do you do?

  • It's not there.

  • Not bad choices.

  • None of them more.

  • But it's the idea of working.

  • You don't know.

  • Very casual, informal with each other.

  • I've noticed some boy comes over to a girl, you want to go with beach and scored and he takes it.

  • It doesn't mean he has a date for the room gets Very since I'm happy I met you to tarnish blitz on.

  • She does to.

  • My daughter told me a lot of what goes on because she's with us.

  • But I very casual and very credit.

  • They seem to be like one great big fraternity.

  • We have evolved and hypothesis, and it is simply that we feel that they're going to find their identity through consumption.

  • So we're in the past, we have been making products for young people as against old people.

  • Little class people is against perhaps higher class people.

  • The suggestion is that we need to refine this further into a more segmented market.

  • Not only do we need products for young people, but for sophisticated young people as against props.

  • Loving young people are literal minded young people way was just trying to get away from too much control.

  • Too much being killed.

  • E guess all ages air like that reach teen these days.

  • Even worse.

  • You got so much anger your head You don't worry about school job, social life, getting away with Parents are afraid to face it.

  • It's just a whole generation.

  • Just hear people black.

  • It's not that they lack concerned, but they lack enough concern to really look at a problem.

  • Figure out what might be an answer cold thing that they're concerned that it might affect them.

  • They're fun, but that's the extent of it.

  • You know, I really don't feel that you take the time even to tell me anything that that you're doing during the day.

  • And I can feel it all close to you.

  • I can't see you Sunday.

  • Um, really?

  • You're just feeling you've got better things to worry about.

  • Parent home, about the problems of our entire during the day.

  • 20 five more to your day, grant you a part of his problems.

  • But there isn't anything that you could do.

  • You're concerned enough about not having things perfect.

  • I don't know anything about you from six o'clock in the morning until 12.

  • 30.

  • You want to talk about when you come home?

  • What?

  • Okay, You know, what can I say?

  • How could I know what your problem is?

  • That this is all things that I do the little things that don't necessarily.

  • Johnny does things that are interesting.

  • You might be.

  • You know, you don't wanna know right here with little problems that I have a repairman coming or people coming to the door the whole place before you should become a doctor will think they're after night from There are times when against to be just a week after week after week of being right.
