I wanna share with you a little bit about something

Modal verbs - A2

that I recently had to come to terms with, letting go of.

It's actually something that all of us have

and it's taking me a long time to appreciate the role

Especially up till now when I had to let go of it --

what I thought was possible to do with the voice

versus what I used to think was impossible.

And what I think is possible versus impossible with the body,

And -- one of the things I love about it is

of what you expect is possible in the world,

it can go so far outside of what your expectation is.

And that's what got me into it in the first place.

It was an incredible performance by a guy named Rahzel.

And, you know the drum noises that some of this people make --

Can get pretty close to the drum -- (Applause)

There is more -- (Deep voice) There is more to come.

You can do some incredible things with beatboxing,

in one of these performances -- we're doing

And -- It's this incredible performance and it doesn't seem possible --

And -- I'm interested in what moves us, what moves you.

(Beatboxing and singing) ♫ I want to know what moves you ♫

really push the fast parts and the cool parts

and making just distinct noise, sound, all on it's own.

Those comprise the technical aspects, but what's

the hardest part for me in really moving forward,

actually comes from the hesitation to make weird sounding noises.

And the more I think about that, the more I notice

You know, the first thing I do, for instance

And then -- the funny thing is to notice how if I hear

somebody else coming up the stairs then I just --

A person comes up and I'll just -- (Singing acting normal)

as they walk by, as if they didn't know that that was me.

is the same thing that I have to let go of

to come up here and make weird noises in front of you.

And it's -- you know, it's entirely internal.

by myself sometimes, with -- (Wheeze sounds)

I am working on the soft palate right now --

But maybe it will eventually and learning how to train

different parts of myself to vibrate in different ways,

(Deep cracked voice) is what taught me how to be able to do that

that's actually someting above my vocal cords.

You can hear I was doing two things at the same time,

So, letting you in on this little process is just, you know --

you can feel so amazed sometimes by something that's --

but rather than substitute information that matches

your current set of 'what's possible in the world.'

What I like to work on just letting go, and kind of let the experience come in

and not give myself to the negative self talk,

and the kind of -- I wanna hide -- (Singing acting normal)
