  • Hey guys I'm Nysha and you're watching me on your favourite Channel to learn English,

  • Let's Talk. Today's lesson is all about speaking English confidently. We all know that the

  • English language is one of the most popular languages to learn and it's perhaps one of

  • the most spoken languages around the world, which is why many choose to learn English

  • either to communicate more effectively or simply to place themselves in a better position

  • to secure a job. So tell me how do you feel about speaking in English, do you feel nervous?

  • Do you feel anxious? Does your heart start pounding a little bit at that thought? When

  • was the last time you got really excited about practicing speaking in English? You are here

  • watching this video because you want to feel more confident speaking in English, don't

  • you? So today I'm gonna give you some very useful tips that you can use to skyrocket

  • your confidence with speaking in English. So guys are you all excited? Come on, here we go..

  • My tip number one is to believe in yourself, don't be afraid. You may be scared

  • that people may judge you or make fun of you when you attempt to speak in English. It does

  • not matter what others think, especially if it is negative. It is essential for you to

  • be positive, I've noticed that some English learners who have commented on some of my

  • previous videos, stating that they too wish they could speak English fluently like me

  • by the end of 2020, but they feel it seems impossible and unlikely to happen. This type

  • of statement highlights the fact that confidence is in oneself is so important. I want to tell

  • you my lovely English learners that you can achieve anything you want in life and more

  • likely to get a far better and quicker result if you have a positive frame of mind, it can

  • be anything you want to achieve in life even talking fluently in English, like a native

  • English speaker. What is essential is that you remember to have a positive approach to

  • your journey from being someone who can't speak English fluently to becoming a fluent

  • one. Did you know that so many people around the world whose first language is not English,

  • with regular practice and perseverance eventually now speak English fluentlytherefore so

  • can youYou need to believe in yourself and that is the first tip to success. Tip

  • number two that I have for you today is positive body language. Your body language is the first

  • impression you give out of yourself to the world and it's important because body language

  • says a lot about you even before you start to speak. If you're worried you won't be understood

  • when you speak in English. Start with a warm smile and good eye contact. The person you're

  • talking to is probably likely to be more polite and willing to converse with you, especially

  • in conversation I have observed that non-native speakers tend to feel rather nervous and sometimes

  • even feel intimidated when talking to native English speakers, their confidence levels

  • dip considerably in comparison to when they are speaking to others who are not speakers

  • of English. Even with simple things such as introducing themselves to native speakers,

  • look at this example of a short self-introduction, “Hi I’m Nysha, I've just recently joined

  • this companyand now if you said this same sentence with positive body language, “Hi

  • I’m Nysha, I've just recently joined this companysee the difference? The direct

  • eye contact and smile is the starting point to gaining that confidence. Your body language

  • needs to be positive, as your body language plays an important role in your own feelings

  • of confidence. Remember confidence starts with you. Tip number three is to be aware

  • of your surroundings. As you are aware English is everywhere on TV, in newspapers, when you

  • listen to the radio, when you watch the news on social media platforms such as YouTube,

  • where you're watching me right Now, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. when you hear or

  • read a new word, find out what it means, look it up in the dictionary or even better search

  • for the meaning of the word on the internet quickly from your phone, learn how that word

  • is spelt and how it can be used in a sentence, you will find various example sentences for

  • the word you are learning about on the internet which will make it easy for you to learn about

  • its correct usage. Make this exercise a habit and you'll notice that as you keep looking

  • up new words you come across in daily life, learn their meaning and how it is to be used

  • in a sentence this will slowly help to build up not only your vocabulary but also your

  • confidence in understanding the English language better. Tip number four is split into Part

  • A and B. So, starting with Part A is to read aloud. Take a page from a book or newspaper,

  • whatever your interest and read aloud to yourself. Now you may be wondering why should you read

  • aloud? Let me tell you that reading aloud helps to improve your delivery of the words

  • you are reading, teaches you to speak at a steady pace and makes you pause at punctuation

  • marks to better understand the meaning of the content you are reading. Full stops typically

  • require a longer pause whereas commas require a shorter pause. With regular practice these

  • skills then also start to show in your speaking voice, in general conversation and gradually

  • your voice is louder clearer making you sound far more confident. And Part B is to practice

  • speed reading it is fascinating how some people can read much faster than others, isn't it?

  • You may think that it's just a special skill they were born with, but let me tell you that's

  • actually not the case, for people who can speed read their brain is processing information

  • quicker than the average person but you can do the same with a bit of practice, reading

  • faster is something we can all learn how to do, let's take the example I gave you from

  • Part A where I asked you to read aloud, now read aloud and time yourself every time, over

  • time you will realize that you are reading that page from your chosen book or newspaper

  • faster each time, believe it or not the ability to read very fast can actually build your

  • self-confidence, one of the reasons for this is that speed readers invariably have excellent

  • vocabulary skills, they are capable of reading very fast because they understand the words

  • used in their reading materials and don't have to stop and look them up. They're also

  • able to use those words in their own conversations and presentations so you can do the same with

  • practice. Tip number five is correct pronunciation. Nothing can lower your self-confidence more

  • than when you're learning a new language and you pronounce words wrong. Imagine you've

  • learned a set of new words and you want to start using them in your daily conversation,

  • so you're sitting with a group of friends and you use one of the words you've just learned

  • because you know what the word means and you feel it is the correct word to use to express

  • yourself, until now great going but guess what? You get the pronunciation of the word

  • totally wrong and your friends look at you or at each other and say whatwhat did

  • you just say? Just then at that moment I know you can feel your confidence really going

  • down, especially around people it can really, really take a dig at your confidence. So how

  • can we fix this? I have a simple solution for you, go onto the internet onto Google,

  • type the word or phrase that you're learning and on the bottom left hand corner under the

  • word is a sound button, click on that sound button and you'll hear exactly how the word

  • needs to be pronounced, it will even give you the option to choose the pronunciation

  • of the word in British English or American English. Oh guys, you know I still do this,

  • till now. The English language is forever evolving and there are new words being added

  • to the English language every so often, so to ensure you'll never go wrong with the pronunciation

  • of a word, do use this tip so that the next time you use new words in conversation, you'll

  • have the confidence that you're pronouncing them correctly. My next tip is to learn some

  • English tongue twisters yes, this is a fun one. Tongue twisters can reveal certain weaknesses

  • in your speaking skills. When saying tongue twisters it is it will help you to identify

  • which word sounds you find difficult to pronounce to speak the English language far more fluently,

  • in fact I'm going to share with you one of my favourite tongue twisters right now which

  • I feel you could start with as good practice, here it is on the screen for you, let's say

  • it together slowlyokay ready? “she sells seashells on the seashore”, try saying this

  • repeatedly ten times, you'll know why this phrase is called a tongue twister, there are

  • a lot ofsaandshsounds in this sentence which make it a tongue twister and

  • this is actually one of the first lines of the complete tongue twister just to get you

  • started off. So, come on let's say againshe sells seashells on the seashore”. You know

  • you've mastered this first line of the tongue twister if you can say it fast like thisshe

  • sells seashells on the seashore”. If you're struggling with this that's okay, don't worry

  • about it, start saying the sentence aloud slowly one word at a time and gradually with

  • practice you'll realize that your speed will increase and you'll be able to pronounce each

  • word in this tongue twister not only correctly but clearly too. If you find this one easy,

  • search for the full version of this tongue twister and you can also look for more of

  • them on the Internet. This exercise will surely boost your confidence in your journey to speaking

  • English fluently. Tip number seven is to be a good listener. Listen to how native speakers

  • pronounce certain words and practice saying those words in the same manner. When you're

  • surrounded by people who are speaking in English, listen and observe how they correct themselves

  • if they make a mistake while speaking in English, after all native speakers can also muddle

  • up words sometimes when they speak, right? One thing native speakers do is, they don't

  • panic. If they make a mistake while speaking in English, they just quickly correct themselves

  • and carry on with the conversation. So, if you listen to how words in English are spoken

  • and keep practicing doing the same thing, this will surely build your confidence when

  • you converse in English. Tip number eight is to create your own responses to questions.

  • You know, instead of repeating what you hear people saying in general, this is your chance

  • to be original and put forward your thoughts and ideas in your own individual manner in

  • the same way as everyone has their own style of dressing, everyone has their own style

  • of speaking in English too. One-word answers should actually be avoided as they seem very

  • you know short, direct and don't tend to leave room for further conversation. Try and use

  • more words when expressing yourself instead of a simpleyesornowhen you

  • are asked questions. Here's a quick example, “Hey, do you want to go bowling this weekend?”

  • A short, direct reply to this question would be, “Yes, okay.” Or just anokay”.

  • Perhaps you can say a little bit more and say, “Yes, that sounds like fun, I'm up

  • for it”, “Oh yes, I'm game for that”, you'll notice that the more words you use

  • to express yourself in English, your fluency and confidence in speaking English will gradually

  • build, after all like they say, ‘Rome wasn't built in a day’, was it? The next tip, tip

  • number nine is to keep calm and don't worry so much about your mistakes especially in

  • grammar guys, we are all human and we all make mistakes but the next time you make a

  • mistake while speaking in English, don't think, “Damn! I made the same mistake again...”

  • what's important is that you've realized that the mistakes that you're making in your spoken

  • English again and again, just pick out those mistakes what are they you know what am I

  • repeatedly making a mistake with it again and again, spot that, work on getting rid

  • of those mistakes that you're making and over time your English will improve considerably

  • as will your confidence. Think of your mistakes in speaking English as your golden opportunity

  • to learn as making a mistake is a fastest way to improve your English. There is a no

  • grammar book or smartphone app or online video which will teach you better than your own

  • mistakes when you speak in English. Anyone who hasn't made a mistake, hasn't learned

  • anything new, right? So, mistakes are proof that you are trying. Also correct grammar

  • when speaking in English is important yes, but far what's far more important is your

  • ability to communicate effectively with the person that you're speaking to and for the

  • person to understand you, even if your grammar is not totally correct, don't sweatthat

  • can be fixed over time and with continued dedicated practice, right? So, learn to keep

  • calm when you make mistakes and you will improve with time. The last tip I have for you is

  • to accept the uniqueness of English and make learning English fun. Yes, English does have

  • some you know, strange rules which make it difficult to understand and remember but you

  • know, that's just the way it is, you need to accept that English can be a difficult

  • language to master and learn to accept its uniqueness, the key is to make learning English

  • fun. Do you remember anything about a subject you really disliked at school? Probably not,

  • right? And why do you think that is it's? Because it wasn't fun for you. You didn't

  • enjoy it. So to make learning English fun, mix up all these tips I've given you today,

  • someday you can practice your pronunciation with some fun tongue twisters then work on

  • your body language, other days you can watch a movie with the subtitles on until you feel

  • you can understand what's being said without the need for subtitles and another day maybe

  • you can learn new words and how they're used in a sentenceSee the point is to make

  • learning English fun not to make it in a mundane task, a boring task which you need to do,

  • so it's important that while you practice your English make it fun guys, believe in

  • yourself and remain positive, never for a single moment think I can't do this it's too

  • hard, I won't be able to do itdon't say such negative things to yourself, as I said
