  • (country music)

  • - Hi everybody.

  • I'm in the desert.

  • This is called High Desert in California.

  • It's near Joshua Tree National Park.

  • This is middle of nowhere.

  • I rented my really nice house, and I can cook.

  • I'm traveling with my family members.

  • We are going to next itinerary, Las Vegas today,

  • so I'll make some quick lunch.

  • This is a sandwich, Korean style sandwich.

  • It's called samsaek sandwich.

  • Samsaek means three colors.

  • Three color sandwich.

  • I used to make this sandwich for my family all the time

  • when I lived in Korea, especially when my children went

  • to school, I used to make a lunchbox, they really loved it.

  • It has a lot of good memories.

  • So today I'm with my family,

  • I'm going to make this and we'll all together enjoy

  • and talk about old times.

  • (laughing)

  • Outside is so so hot, you know daytime,

  • but today I woke up early morning to make this video.

  • I'll make this video for two servings only,

  • and then later, I'll make a huge, more, for my whole family.

  • By the way in the last scene of this video,

  • I will surprise you, okay, be ready.

  • So three colors, first start with green.

  • I will use cucumber.

  • Cucumber, let's chop it up.

  • Adding a lot of cucumber is really tasty.

  • I add a lot of cucumber.

  • Just a couple of times, like this, and then

  • put it in the bowl.

  • These, I brought my cups.

  • All the time follow me.

  • It's around one cup, and let's see.

  • Around two cups cucumber.

  • Salt, half a teaspoon.

  • And mix.

  • So sooner or later, these guys are going to sweat,

  • and then we're going to squeeze out all excess water.

  • Green color done.

  • Next, yellow.

  • What do you think I use for yellow color?

  • You are right, egg.

  • I'm using four eggs, these are hard boiled eggs.

  • I need egg yolk only.

  • Egg yolk.

  • This egg white, save this and eat later.

  • This is ham, we use ham.

  • Any type of ham, just cooked ham you should use,

  • so red color.

  • I'll use four slices of ham.

  • I think around one cup.

  • This is 240 milliliter for one cup.

  • So now this egg yolk, I will add this mayonnaise,

  • mayonnaise around two tablespoons.

  • And I will add this mustard because mustard

  • is a yellow color, so make it more yellow,

  • and also gives a good flavor.

  • Around one tablespoon, and mix.

  • Nice, isn't it?

  • Ham, just I need around two or three tablespoons mayonnaise.

  • Pretty.

  • Meanwhile, these guys are sweating, I told you,

  • so kind of watery.

  • I like to squeeze out this because cucumber

  • has lots of water, almost 90% is water, cucumber,

  • so we need to remove.

  • Time to squeeze.

  • You guys are wondering that I said

  • "Today I have a surprise at the end,"

  • probably you will be wondering, eh?

  • Oh wow, lots of water comes out.

  • And then put it back.

  • You guys are going to ask me, "Where you get this?"

  • This is Korean grocery store kitchenware section

  • you can find, these days a lot of products are coming.

  • Cucumber also around two tablespoons mayonnaise.

  • And this is ground black pepper, quarter teaspoon.

  • And mix together.

  • So these guys, three colors.

  • Next, we'll need bread.

  • This white bread, white milk bread.

  • Smells good.

  • So I can use like this.

  • I put these three pieces of bread,

  • and first let's start yellow.

  • Every bowl I'm going to divide into three portions.

  • We are going to cut it off this edge part

  • so you don't have to spread to this edge.

  • And next, another piece.

  • Green stuff also three.

  • And then, next piece, third floor.

  • Red color.

  • Fourth floor, that's finished.

  • So this is three colored, fourth floor sandwich we made,

  • we built up, and I will just add this,

  • my lunchbox to give you idea how to wrap lunchbox.

  • I have one egg.

  • This egg is surprise.

  • What?

  • One egg is surprise?

  • Wait, wait.

  • Cut the edge.

  • The edge part, let's put it here.

  • This is a bread knife.

  • Look at this, isn't it pretty?

  • And very juicy also, not dry.

  • Let's add this here, perfect size.

  • We need one more here.

  • So, okay.

  • Look at this, we have three pieces of sandwich

  • for one serving, really colorful and pretty.

  • If you make this for your family members, they will love it,

  • actually taste is so good.

  • And also, all chopped up in small pieces,

  • easily you can chew also.

  • And this one, let's cut it also.

  • This is lunchbox, samsaek sandwich.

  • "What are you going to do Maangchi with all edges?"

  • I know you guys, I know you guys have a question.

  • Sandwich edge party, how does it sound?

  • (laughing)

  • Fun.

  • Or if you can't eat all, make one portion,

  • and keep in the plastic bag, and put it in the freezer,

  • and then later, take it out and just eat it.

  • Or if you want to make it more tasty,

  • just bake 10 minutes, and then crispy and nice, and all

  • including everything, it's really don't ever throw away.

  • Make a party.

  • (laughing)

  • I learned this recipe long, long time ago.

  • When I was in university, I was a freshman,

  • and then there was a school event,

  • MT, or "membership training."

  • So Korean university students, they go to some place,

  • two nights and three days.

  • Kind of an orientation.

  • I went to membership training, and then

  • there was a really nice place that my school,

  • the university has a nice nice kind of a cottage.

  • And we hundreds of students, we all got together,

  • and my seniors, they made a meal for us.

  • So freshmen, we didn't have to cook anything, they made.

  • One of the items I remember is the curry rice,

  • Korean style curry rice, how easy it is,

  • you know curry powder, and they just

  • chop up vegetables and they're making.

  • That was really beautiful atmosphere, and we just enjoyed.

  • And then next day I saw that all my senior students,

  • those guys are making, all chopping up, everybody.

  • What is it?

  • And then they were making this samsaek sandwich.

  • Before that I had never seen this.

  • My senior student, those guys only one year older than me,

  • or two years older than me, but at that time,

  • at that period I thought they are really really old,

  • oh I have to be really polite.

  • (laughing)

  • Now I think that, oh these guys just

  • only one or two years difference,

  • oh they are cute, I can say that.

  • But around that time, "Oh I should be really polite" and

  • whenever they gave us, "Thank you so much, thank you so much."

  • (laughing)

  • And this is a samsaek sandwich that they made.

  • When I tasted this, really tasty,

  • and then I came back home, I made just right after,

  • I made this for my family, my siblings.

  • They loved it.

  • And then after I married, I made this for my family too.

  • Such, such an easy recipe, but it has a really good memory,

  • and really, stories is melted inside.

  • So I'm going to taste, and today is special I told you,

  • I have a special guest.

  • This is for my special guest, egg yolk.

  • My special guest too will eat this.

  • Come here, come here.

  • Oh yeah, here you go.

  • This is my daughter's dog.

  • Here you go, eat it.

  • Let me taste.

  • He's finished.

  • No no no no, no, dog shouldn't eat salt, any salt.

  • That's enough.

  • Crispy, juicy, yummy.

  • Come here.

  • (cooing)

  • Hello hello hello.

  • (laughing)

  • Long time ago I used to be afraid of dog but these days

  • I miss this guy, this is so lovely, lovely.

  • And he really loves me too because he knows I love him.

  • I made chicken jerky for him, and he loves this.
