  • [Sharla]: Hey guys! [Taylor]: Good morning!

  • Okay, so today me and Taylor are gonna go to two different convenience stores

  • 7-Eleven and Family Mart, which are probably my two faves,

  • I used to like Lawson, but recently I'm increasingly liking 7-Eleven and Family Mart [Taylor]: Yeah, I'm a Family Mart girl

  • [Sharla]: Yeah, they're the best. We're gonna do a challenge and see who can make the best

  • Japanese convenience store at dinner.

  • [Taylor]: It might seem like it's difficult to do, but in Japan, it's- the convenience store food is so good [Sharla]: It's so good.

  • [Taylor]: You can eat there all day, it's totally different. [Sharla]: Yeah, it's totally different than like 7-Eleven in Canada. Your choices are like cold hot dogs

  • [Sharla]: Yeah, like I think we're gonna be able to find like an actually nutritional...meal [Taylor]: We're gonna surprise you guys

  • [Sharla]: Okay, let's go [Taylor]: Let's do this.

  • [Sharla]: Alright, I chose to do my shopping for dinner at

  • 7-Eleven, let's go inside and see what we can find

  • I was thinking to get some kind of interesting drink, but the only vegan stuff they have its juice or these

  • Soy milk smoothies which I've heard are pretty gross

  • Okay, I think I'm good for dinner. I'm gonna move on to dessert, which I think will be kind of hard

  • But if I can find some traditional Japanese desserts, they're very often vegan

  • Alright, we have our dinner, it came to

  • 1265 yen

  • [Taylor]: Alright guys, I'm inside Family Mart now

  • We're gonna see what I can find for my full three-course dinner

  • At this point things are looking pretty picked over here

  • This is after lunch, so it's gonna be a little bit difficult

  • This is the frozen section which is usually pretty good for dinner

  • But a lot of the main courses have meat in it

  • Don't think I see one with just vegetables, let's see here

  • These are just beans inside, could be okay

  • Ooh check these out, these are

  • Noodles made from tofu, and they have this sesame sauce on top, that looks pretty cool

  • This one doesn't actually contain milk so I can use this too

  • Might get this too for some extra color and nutrition

  • Let's go pay

  • Okay, I've got everything I need. I spent about one thousand- and not about- I actually spent

  • 1026 yen, which is about $10 American. I'm ready to go.

  • So I'm preparing my dinner

  • I'm just gonna heat up the broccoli first, cuz it's frozen

  • So it's literally just plain, frozen broccoli

  • And then while that is frying up, I'm gonna prepare the noodles here. We've got our vegetables

  • Greens, they got some protein

  • We've got some more fruit and vegetables, you've got

  • Inside here

  • It's like a bread it can be for dessert, so some carbs and fruit, and carbs's here. Try to cover all nutritional

  • bases and get a lot of colors

  • As much as I could find

  • Which is usually difficult in a convenience store, but in Japan it's not too bad

  • So, this is a sauce

  • just like a sesame sauce and you get these this little package of seeds, and then

  • These are the tofu noodles

  • sauce here

  • and now, I'm gonna pour the noodles

  • There we go

  • This doesn't look red at all, it's like brown. That was such false advertising- kay pretend that's a nice red pretty color

  • Got one of these buns

  • Which I thought had meat in it up until now, but this one is a steamed bun with only red bean inside

  • So gonna put this just like, okay

  • Basically this pair, it's like ice cream, but it's not made from milk

  • There, that's our dessert.

  • [Taylor]: Bon Appétit. [Sharla]: So I should start with my appetizer. [Taylor]: Yeah. [Sharla]: Alright, here we go. Family Mart

  • [Taylor]: This is fruit and vegetable

  • I wanted it to be red because I wanted the colours to balance, like I love green. [Sharla]: Yeah, like you thought of everything

  • [Sharla]: Well you needed brown. [Taylor]: Wait, no there's brown here, it's already been done

  • [Sharla]: This isn't bad, at first it really tastes like vegetables, like eurghh, but then the fruit comes through. It is healthy, but

  • But edible. I'm gonna try these tofu noodles, I'm intrigued

  • [Taylor]: The sauce at the bottom is not mixed in. [Sharla]: They're completely made from tofu.

  • [Sharla]: Mmm, they're delicious. [Taylor]: They're delicious?

  • They must be new, I've never seen these before.

  • [Sharla]: I'm really craving those.

  • [Taylor]: Mmm

  • [Taylor]: The texture's really good.

  • [Sharla]: They're firmer than I thought they will be.

  • Ooh broccoli.

  • [Taylor]: I knew it's your favourite. [Sharla]: Mmm, it's really good actually.

  • [Taylor]: *Whispers* Bonus points since it's your favourite.

  • [Sharla]: So far this is really good. I would not mind eating this for dinner

  • [Sharla]: Alright, let's try this fancy dessert. I don't know where to start

  • [Taylor]: Cut into it, get a bit. Okay, Sharla does this thing where she eats things individually and it drives me crazy

  • Because I'm one of those people that likes to mix everything in the sauces to get all the flavors [Sharla]: So I want to get a little

  • bit of everything? [Taylor]: Yeah, okay like

  • This is like the cake with the ice cream with the fruit

  • It's a peach. Thought this is pear.

  • [Sharla]: Well it's a really interesting mix.

  • [Taylor]: Does it work?

  • [Sharla]: But yeah, it's actually good. [Taylor]: Actually, this was supposed to be hot

  • [Taylor]: *coughs* when I bought it. [Sharla]: It's warm.

  • [Sharla]: I kinda like it, yeah, this works.

  • [Sharla]: Yeah I like the coldness of the ice cream.

  • with the warm bun.

  • [Taylor]: I like that- I like doing that for dessert.

  • Balancing, I mean, different temperatures.

  • [Sharla]: It's good, my favourite's definitely the noodles.

  • They're so good, I'm gonna be buying these all the time, I love them.

  • Okay, I'm gonna prepare my 7-Eleven dinner now

  • I'm quite confident that I found some really interesting stuff, and I think Taylor's gonna like it

  • Okay, so I'm gonna start off by plating the sashimi konnyaku (konjac)

  • I've never seen this before, it looks really interesting, and I think it's a cool vegan alternative to sashimi.

  • Comes with a miso karashi (a type of mustard) sauce

  • It's kinda cut like sashimi too

  • For dish number two, I'm going to be making a tofu salad

  • This is a kale and lettuce salad, got tofu here, and I'm going to add a bit of this kinpira (sauté and simmer)

  • Gobo salad as well. These are like root vegetables

  • For the next dish, I found this which is brand new, it's "kuro satou inari" ("black"/brown sugar beancurd pockets)

  • type of sushi

  • But normally they're not kuro satou flavored- black sugar? Brown sugar?

  • So these might be a little sweeter than usual, it's a tofu pocket with rice inside

  • And for some color, I'm going to place some edamame

  • on the plate.

  • For dessert, I've got a selection of Japanese sweets, this is kuromi mochi- walnut

  • rice cakes

  • This is a monaka, which is like a wafer with red bean paste inside. I'm most excited for this one

  • It's yokan, which is usually just made from red beans, but this one is chocolate flavoured

  • And so I think this is gonna be really good

  • And my dinner is complete

  • [Taylor]: Wow, this looks so good, you did so good

  • This is gonna be tough to pick up though.

  • [Sharla]: Haha, just stab it with a fork.

  • [Taylor]: Mmmm

  • [Sharla]: Is it good? [Taylor]: Mm-hmm.

  • It's like the restaurant ones like- the sauce is nice.

  • [Sharla]: Mmm. It tastes so similar to fish.

  • [Taylor]: Yeah, it does have that...[Sharla]: and the texture?

  • (Taylor: I guess it's from the sea right?) [Sharla]: It's really similar to raw fish too. They added seaweed to this one (Taylor: Oh, that's why) to make it fishier

  • I guess

  • [Taylor]: Mmm

  • [Taylor]: I love all of these things. [Sharla]: Yeah you can't go wrong with kinpira gobo.

  • [Taylor]: This is delicious. I could definitely eat this for dinner, really good.

  • [Taylor]: Ooh I love these too. [Sharla]: Brown sugar. [Taylor]: I've never tried this one

  • [Sharla]: They are brand new, I wonder if they're sweet.

  • [Taylor]: Mm-hmm, it's a lot sweeter than the other ones

  • Has this almost, burnt sugar taste to it.

  • [Sharla]: Caramel? [Taylor]: Yeah like caramelised or something.

  • Edamame's always a good idea.

  • Everything's really good, I don't know what's my favourite.

  • [Taylor]: I wanna try this. [Sharla]: Yah, chocolate yokan.

  • [Taylor]: Mmm

  • [Sharla]: Pretty chocolatey? [Taylor]: Mm-hmm.

  • It's a good chocolate pudding, but a bit firmer

  • That's different, that almost tastes like um

  • You know this chocolate bar Big Turk? [Sharla]: Mm-hmm...yeah! [Taylor]: Inside, that's what that tastes like [Sharla]: Oh weird

  • [Taylor]: The texture's- same texture.

  • [Sharla]: Those chocolate yokans are amazing.

  • [Taylor]: It's really good [Sharla]: It's almost like a brownie, like a really moist brownie.

  • So good!

  • [Taylor]: I think my favorite

  • Probably the salad. I love these flavours together- I love tofu, I love this vegetable

  • [Taylor]: I'm gonna mix it all together [Sharla]: NOOOO! Don't do it

  • Let us know down below who you think won the Japanese konbini dinner challenge. Whose dinner would you prefer to eat?
