  • Hi! Welcome to a one minute teaching tip about getting students to highlight their text efficiently.

  • Often at the beginning of the terms, teachers tell students that they need to highlight their text,

  • however, what students generally do is something like this:

  • It might be worth your while to take a couple of minutes at the beginning of the term

  • to show students how to highlight the text that they're going to be reading that term.

  • For example, you might want to demonstrate color coding.

  • Show the students that when they see a key concept to highlight it in blue.

  • Then when they see an example or an explanation, they might want to highlight it in yellow.

  • When they transitional words they may want to highlight those in green.

  • Now when students are preparing for an exam, all they need to do is look at the color coding.

  • They see key points are yellow; those are really important.

  • And the relationship between key points and ideas are highlighted as transitions.

  • Hope you find this helpful!
