and so your natural reaction as a reader is, wait, why?

should be specific to movies or television shows or fiction.

You can do exactly the same thing in a work of nonfiction.

You can withhold information for unreasonable periods of time

and leave your audience saying, well, wait a minute.

Because maybe they don't know what they haven't been told,

but they just know that there's something missing.
