  • my name's Jonah.

  • Welcome to ask John D.

  • Jones.

  • Okay, so in today's episode announcer, a question that I know a lot of my colleagues are very interested about on that is what is the state of contracting in UK at the moment?

  • Okay, so for all of you who are not based in the UK, this might be a bit before in video.

  • But for any of you Hermes or contractors in the UK, then there's actually some tax bills coming up potentially in April, which is actually gonna affect the drug market.

  • And it's definitely something you should be a well, So for those of you who don't know, they're basically scheme for the I.

  • R.

  • 35 as a contractor, I've had to being outside of I R 35 since my career.

  • Now, to come out outside of our 35 you have to do like a few things so potentially you can't.

  • If you're invoice multiple people every month, then you'll be outside by off at five.

  • If you use your equipment and your software, you're outside and I are 35.

  • If you could swap yourself with somebody else again, your I R outside I think five.

  • Basically what the scheme is, and what the policy is all about is basically there's some companies out there who hire people and they might be there for 10 years.

  • And these people worked 10 years, didn't swap jobs, and in effect, they're just a permanent employee now because they're contractors, they don't actually pay the same amount of tax as everyone else for his permit employed on This is basically where the government thinks life is a bit unfair because as they think that anyone who self employed to be paying the same amount of tax as employees people now as a contractor myself, I sort of see you know I can't stand by.

  • The government wants us to pay a little bit more tax.

  • On the flip side of that, as a contract in a self employed person, I need to hire an accountant with my accountant cost me about £1000 a year.

  • I also need to do my tax returns.

  • I also need to like, figure out manage.

  • It looks like contracts.

  • I guess You know, if you're a permanent, you get 10 days holiday as a contractor, everything with their take off I don't get paid.

  • So if I broke my leg, I broke my hand and I worked six months.

  • That's my problem, you know, don't get maternity pay.

  • So asking people to pay the same amount of tax, but they get different benefits is someone who self employed a big school, especially what this means is the government clamped down and they want people who work cos have more than 50 employees debated Lee work with Inside the eye are 35 tax bracket.

  • Now when you work inside, the five tax bracket will mean the same £500 a day your net take home would be £400 a day nervously just because the tax is changing and the laws of changing that doesn't necessarily mean that need and the work of the I T industry within the UK it's changing socially cos we're still need people.

  • But then how the heart people will be a lot more difficult because do you have a family?

  • So you know, like, so good.

  • But then what happens if you're working on temporary projects for me?

  • I work on websites, most of the comics, websites and CMS bills.

  • I work on the take about a year to build off that websites built do meet the same amount of staff again.

  • So it creates like a bit difficult need because all the people who they need hard for like that one years helped them build that Web site if they have to work within.

  • I are 35 which would basically workout is getting paid the same amount of permanent employees.

  • But that stage you're not getting any of the holidays.

  • Job security.

  • Any of these, like plus benefits thinks like a bit difficult.

  • So then, potentially in the future of contractors gonna be charging more money.

  • Potentially, people are gonna wanna harm or permanent employees, whoever that changes.

  • Or however it plays out.

  • In the first of April, things definitely changed massively.

  • If you looked in the news this week, it's a table in the UK or the big banks like Barclays HSBC J.

  • P.

  • Morgan.

  • They've already told all their contractors that their contract will not be renewed by anymore, said recently.

  • By this time, by April, or contractors will be gone.

  • Now, potentially they'll be given new contracts.

  • But the moment I know someone who's down canary warf and he said, It's very doom gloom down there.

  • There's a bar one night and there's about 100 contracts in there.

  • Everyone drowned in their woes because they're not sure what they're gonna happen with their jobs.

  • Actually, if you'll permit me on your thinking, yeah, he cares about these contractors.

  • What you gotta think about now is that we're the next coming months.

  • You have low contractors who have been contracting for years or before about contracting.

  • They're not gonna try and find permanent drugs trying to eke out this transition period.

  • I know a lot of people are doing that now and then.

  • The problem with that is speaking for Recruiter for the other day with Putin basically saying he put out a C sharp drop back within two hours, they had 200.

  • What's happening because you've got so many people losing their jobs or their contracts are being nude.

  • You've got now looking for work, and they're all going to permanent close.

  • So, you know, maybe a year ago when there's all these permanent positions and a lot of people would talk more trying to get contracting work because it paid more.

  • Now you've got all these permanent roles where you've got now are massed.

  • In fact, people, actually what's gonna happen is you know, it's gonna be a probably tough contractors on department people off state route, just finding a drug for a big period of time.

  • So what can you do about one if you read any good finance book?

  • What?

  • No says, make sure you have an emergency.

  • It's obviously when you're working 90 especially if your contractor these ups and downs, happen from time to time.

  • Look at the big global financial crisis of 2007.

  • I mean, there's a big like a stock market crash in 19 twenties like stuff like this is being going on for hundreds of years.

  • So, like anything else, just need to make sure you've got a way of cutting your bills.

  • So if you haven't got an emergency funding your contractor, I would definitely recommend you start saving up now and making sure that you're having a good 36 months worth of bills covered because, you know, again, if you're in a contracting roll now you're looking for row.

  • I would hunt, recommend that you start looking for contracts for companies less than 50 people.

  • I would no way recommend that moment.

  • Just get contract.

  • Especially if your news contracting company 50 people, Because within three or four months, things are gonna change.

  • And when you're looking for a new contract in three or four months, people like me, they're gonna brought people on all the guys down in every war, there's just gonna be a load of people we're looking for works.

  • There might be a bit more struggled.

  • Another thing that I've done is actually buy real estate.

  • So at the moment I've got you buy to let properties get people to pay rent on.

  • I know that if I'm unemployed, I still have my rent money coming in from the people.

  • So I'm sort of covered on that.

  • This is something that you haven't done.

  • This is something that I recommend anyone who worked in I t consider alternative sources of income within 19.

  • I graduated about 15 years ago and I'm doing C sharp with that Whip forms went away, and then it was dot net on it was NBC.

  • And then now there's dot net core.

  • Commonly, I'm working in react well on because the I t.

  • job market changes, so much skills required changes.

  • So much for anyone who works in I t.

  • That's always like this big risk on There's a hi hi trance and pretty much any other fashion that your jobs so soon as you get about 45 50 will become obsolete because the technology, you know, just aren't being used anymore.

  • So this reason I was being quite paranoid, and I've always made Neff of trying to make alternative income do other streams, not based on i t.

  • So if I get 50 and I didn't have any skills anymore, and I wasn't improbable, had something for backup rather than, you know, just one day going, I can't pay the bills on Screwed.

  • I hope that's given you a little bit of food door again.

  • It doesn't matter your demon gloom, but basically until the first make what happens.

  • These rules come in on that 100% definite.

  • Then you know, there's a lot of what I can say is probably next year with bugs it because we live in England because of all these tax rolls on all these tax changes between inside our five outside 35 like things are gonna be very difficult on Life's gonna be a bit nine.

  • I mean, another thing which I probably haven't mentioned is that the government already did this to the public sector.

  • If you work for the Council of Government, they got rid of contractors.

  • Couple of years ago, Lo's projects got canceled.

  • There's loads change, and it was a load of pain I haven't worked in.

  • I t I'm sure that all these guys still working, they will pay their bills.

  • So because there's so much demand on the so little programmers a moment, you know, I think everything's gonna be okay.

  • But potentially anyone out there it's gonna be taking, you know, 10 20% pickup.

  • Or, you know, you might have to face in a few months of work, But you knew about it.

  • Now you plan for it should be good.

  • Anyway, I hope this video is being hopeful.

  • Someone, if you want to become an absolute legend, describe.

  • But are we talking about these tax laws as it gets a bit near April?

  • Obviously, I'm in the self employed game for long hole.

  • I won't be moving for me, so let's see how it pans out.
