  • darling, you surprise some folks.

  • Hi, women.

  • The way you came out to tell everybody about that at the Folk festival, the Newport Folk Festival, which has been going on for years and years.

  • It was just an amazing night, and I got to sing with wonderful women.

  • I was watching Twitter absolutely fold in on itself and explode when that was happening.

  • And it just like Retweet Retweet.

  • The Newport Folk Festival is a place where a lot of firsts have happened.

  • And I know that Dolly took that legacy and one up this summer, Dolly chose songs we did.

  • She's an eagle. 00:01:8.140 --> 00:01:11.140 The high women gathered together, a nod to the highway.

  • Men and Kristofferson, Nelson cash on Jennings there, these four female artists that are super successful on their own.

  • But they've come together to make this crew.

  • They talk about strong women, they make great songs.

  • So it's perfect that Dolly Parton would give her support to something like that.

  • I think one of things about Dolly is that she genuinely supports women in our business.

  • Why did you want to be there for you to be there for my girls?

  • You know I love that that girl power.

  • I'm always touched when all these young new artists say that they've drawn some inspiration from me.

  • I want to be there is their Aunt Dolly.

  • The older, you know want to say yes, we can do it.

  • And yes, you can do it.

  • And I'm proud of you.

  • Okay? 00:01:59.620 --> 00:02:0.420 Gotta take it down. 00:02:0.420 --> 00:02:0.770 Memory. 00:02:0.770 --> 00:02:1.080 Wait. 00:02:1.280 --> 00:02:7.060 Oh, Lord of the 1977. 00:02:7.220 --> 00:02:8.050 Okay, Okay. 00:02:8.320 --> 00:02:9.750 He had these big dreams.

  • And this is what you said to Barbara Walters.

  • I like to think that there's more money to be made than the money I've been making.

  • I've been working too hard too long for too little.

  • What do you make?

  • What did you make us a country stock?

  • Well, I made a great deal.

  • I usually don't.

  • You know, the most money that I've made as a country artist would probably be maybe 5 $600,000 a year.

  • But, you know, that's you've got to pay expenses in this sort of thing.

  • Course that's not counting records and that sort of thing.

  • But when you say that you can make millions compared the thousands, and if you are going to be in this business, if you are talented, if you do love it, that why not touches many people.

  • My dream was always to make as many people happy as I could.

  • A man.

  • Dolly Parton.

  • You knew your worth.

  • Well, I did. 00:02:58.920 --> 00:03:0.600 I knew that what I was supposed to do. 00:03:0.600 --> 00:03:2.190 And I thought, I'm not getting enough. 00:03:2.540 --> 00:03:4.070 But that's amazing to go back. 00:03:4.070 --> 00:03:8.080 And, you know, remember, that's what I always felt in my heart that I had something to give. 00:03:8.160 --> 00:03:10.530 And I thought I was worth something, you know?

  • And I still do way.

  • That Barbara Walters interview is fascinating on about 100 90 different levels.

  • Can we see your room?

  • Yeah.

  • Listen, this is my couch.

  • Also.

  • This is my bed.

  • Here in these cabinets are my wigs.

  • This one is my show closet.

  • Good thing about all these clothes in the closet or hand washable.

  • I just put him in the sink in a motel room.

  • First of all, just as a time capsule moment who is so open about what they're making?

  • She seems to very much know her worth and always be very forgiving of her own ambition.

  • Through the Porter Wagoner years and beyond.

  • That's time for the beautiful little lady to sing one of her fine songs for you.

  • Porter Wagoner felt that he should have a girl singer on his on his shows. 00:03:55.880 --> 00:04:0.370 Porter Wagoner basically said, We're gonna sing duets like We'll get ahead someday. 00:04:0.830 --> 00:04:9.180 Theme In the 19 sixties, Porter Wagoner I had a really successful country music career.

  • Porter at that time had the number one syndicated television show.

  • That's what really got me over the top.

  • You had the first CMA's in 1967 and then 1968 Order.

  • They win it like in successive years.

  • They just win it again and again and again.

  • The camera loved her, and she just had that Something importer recognized that, but more importantly, that television audience they recognized.

  • Imagine, just imagine it from his perspective, like you're the Came country.

  • You're your own personal songs, air like charting in the thirties and forties.

  • But you're definitely your time on the charts is ebbing. 00:05:0.190 --> 00:05:4.180 Meanwhile, you're a little lady sidekick is killing it. 00:05:6.370 --> 00:05:31.350 My first RC album was a song called Just Because I'm a Woman, just about man, you know, wanting to use all these women and then when they want to get married, They want a virgin and they want to do this that they think, Oh, if you've been with someone, I don't want you even if I love you.

  • But it was a number one song here, and it was one of the first.

  • It's really the first song about slut shaming.

  • It's a song that calls out a double standard, and she was singing about it in 1968.

  • So she is just like, absolutely nailing it on the charts.

  • You can't underestimate what a threat she must have been to him, so we kind of, you know, kind of clash a lot.

  • But we had a wonderful, productive relationship. 00:05:55.660 --> 00:06:1.250 And then when I wanted to leave, because I had told Porter early on, I wanted my own career. 00:06:1.340 --> 00:06:7.030 There's been a lot of contentious discussions about trying to leave, and he didn't want to, and she finally did. 00:06:7.740 --> 00:06:8.790 No, it was emotional. 00:06:8.790 --> 00:06:13.100 It was tough and mean spirited it times and out of that trying to go.

  • I wrote the song I will always love you because Porter, we're not listened way saying the song he had just tears rolling down his address.

  • That's a great song.

  • You can go if I can produce that record.

  • So that's kind of how that went.

  • What would you say to a young woman who's watching this right now and maybe feeling overpowered by somebody?

  • What would you say to her to give her the strength to do what?

  • What you did?

  • Well, it's never an easy thing because, you know Porter, he tried to scare me into stuff.

  • Holler me into stuff so I wasn't it was intimidated, or some women are with that because I've seen that male showing her stuff and and when I didn't have the strength of my own to do it, I would just grab from my spiritual self and try to think about Mom and trying to think about Daddy.

  • I gather strength and an odd kind of waiting for my dad to think.

  • How would my daddy stand up to another man?

  • Her leaving of the Porter Wagoner show was a big risk.

  • I think Dolly Parton is a badass with grace.

  • She's fierce, beyond Fear's.

  • What you see is the moment she leaves almost the moment Dolly explodes in a way that I don't think anyone could have imagined.
