  • it is Monday, March 13th 2017.

  • And this is the Monday morning analyst.

  • Thank you, everyone.

  • My name is Luke Thomas.

  • I'm the host of this podcast here on mm.

  • A fighting dot com.

  • Three parts of the podcast, As always, an overview of the weekend.

  • Something's in particular will take a look at with some specificity and then take a look at what's coming up in the weekend ahead.

  • Really Only one event of consequence that we're going to dig into.

  • But before we get into that as we begin the podcast right away, I suppose I just want to sort of give a spotlight, if we can.

  • To a CB absolute championship bear coot.

  • They had a C B 54 over the weekend, and they've been making a number of headlines recently.

  • They had a huge free agent free agent acquisition push.

  • They signed the likes of Zach Makowski Takei, Mr Cocky Look Barnett above the Jenkins Albert to mine all of lots of different guys.

  • And they had an event over this past weekend a huge number of five to think over 20 fights or something like that.

  • But a couple of one's to spotlight by the way number one also Frank Mir is what their color commentator who I think is criminally underused in mixed martial arts.

  • I'm glad to see him get some perspective.

  • Let he has a platform to share his perspective as analyst cause I think he is really, really good at it.

  • Um, but the results here, we're kind of incredible to talk about.

  • We're gonna go through a single one, just a couple of things to spotlight Cell Rogers losing by the way, the Oriel per Tia Bubba Jenkins losing to what they're calling a reverse triangle.

  • Choke to Ali Bagh off.

  • It was sort of like a triangle choke, right?

  • But rather than the last leg clamping down hey, used his own hand bag off did.

  • But it was angle where it was kind of twisted around.

  • So, like the calf was right in the throat.

  • And I don't know if Jenkins, I didn't think it was on or what exactly, But he got his his eyes rolled in the back of his head.

  • And by the way, a.

  • C B is really good about putting their results with video on social media.

  • There shows her free on YouTube so you can go and see all of this for yourself.

  • Really bad loss, by the way, for Bubba Jenkins.

  • Not sure what's next for him, but also on this car.

  • That was kind of amazing.

  • Robert Whiteford, I believe put Nam Phan to sleep in, like, 21 seconds with a couldn't quite tell what appeared to be a 10 finger guillotine.

  • And then the main event.

  • Mama Calad off.

  • Stop it!

  • Also 21 seconds.

  • Luca Barnett.

  • You know, Mom and Calado did not spend his prime.

  • He's 37 years old, I believe.

  • And he lost his prime Thio competing in smaller organizations, which is a long story moment which we won't get to hear for this podcast.

  • But he's still obviously quite competitive.

  • He's athletic.

  • He can really take advantage.

  • This particular case of longer tall fighters if you have a lazy jab.

  • And so he made born at pay.

  • And it was a great show.

  • It was a great free show with good commentary in English.

  • So you guys get a chance check out there, show.

  • I'm not sure when the next one is, but, um, they are making some waves and you should pay attention to them.

  • Okay, with that out of the way.

  • Let's talk about the UFC show.

  • UFC Fight Night 106 UFC Fight night.

  • Belfour versus Gasoline.

  • This took place and forgive my pronunciation at the central day for Masao.

  • Olympic adorn dough, nor de este in Fortaleza, Brazil, at an attendance of 14,069 which was a sell out.

  • I don't have exact gate figures for you at this juncture in the main event, Kelvin Gastelum defeating Vitor Belfour at 3 52 of the first round.

  • V a t k o punch is what can we really say about this one?

  • Things we already knew about gasoline were already true.

  • Um, he can compete at this weight class.

  • I'm not saying he's necessarily going to be a title contender, although I wouldn't rule that out.

  • But certainly he is a very capable competitors.

  • I do think there is some kind of an ass trick ass tricks on this one because he did fighting aging Belfour.

  • He fought a guy who had Tim Kennedy a long layoff and then retired.

  • I'd like to see him compete against some of the more youthful members of the division, but nevertheless, he obviously has great accurate punching, great power punching and gave veto a bill for a lot of trouble.

  • Bill, for as we thought within the 1st 3 minutes of the 1st 5 has great hand speed and good power.

  • But that's just simply wasn't enough.

  • What really sort of got me was, I think, the first knock down that, uh, Gaston was able to score.

  • Belfour never recovered from his left hand that dropped him.

  • Belfour did, in fact get back up, which will notice what happens in the 2nd 1 Is Gastelum jabs into range throws across that just misses.

  • Maybe it glances them.

  • Doesn't really land with impact is my point.

  • But Belfour doesn't adjust.

  • He just keeps his feet.

  • They're So what does Gasol in do Bang bang another 12 and sits him down with that.

  • It was kind of weird.

  • I don't know if Belfour was all there or he just doesn't have the athletic instincts anymore to be able to react to that.

  • But it was a fairly bad loss for him.

  • Somewhat expected, I suppose.

  • But nevertheless, he's saying he wants his last fight to be his next one, which will be the end of his contract in June in Rio.

  • We'll see if he gets it.

  • I don't know what's gonna happen with that, but, um you know, obviously is that a fairly storied career.

  • But he was saying his body just isn't the same anymore, which I think is an understatement.

  • But, um, in any event, not a whole lot new learned about gassed Lemme called Anderson Silva.

  • I don't know if they'll make that fight or not.

  • Silver calling out this being and Nick Diaz on Instagram today.

  • But nevertheless, some of the real positives that we have seen in gasoline were reinforced in this fight.

  • The accuracy, the power, the selection of his offense.

  • And I think all of those things where are, you know?

  • His strong suits will see if he can continue as the opposition gets better.

  • Marie.

  • So, Sheldon, who defeating John Volante 59 seconds of the third round, this one, you kind of knew what was gonna happen in the sense that here are two guys with good offense, not the best defense in the world, and they're both light heavyweight.

  • Someone's probably get cracked here and go down because they're gonna be the aging show Gone Children's only 35.

  • But he's got dog years on him, really, at this point, or Volonte, he's 31.

  • It has good offense and is a big, strong kid.

  • But, you know, his defense has been his problem.

  • He got dropped by a lot of different guys.

  • Some cases he's recovered some cases he hasn't.

  • But it's been a consistent theme in a problem for him.

  • And he actually said in the post fight presser that like, you know, I kind of just went in there and slug it out with him.

  • It's like people don't realise.

  • Volonte wrestled, I believe, Do you want as well with Weidman, UM Attn.

  • Hofstra.

  • And, you know, even whatever the case, he can wrestle.

  • He could do other things.

  • It's kind of surprising that he just went in and slugged it out with a guy who, you know, all things being equal if they're just going to slug it out.

  • It's not that you don't think that Volonte can win, but a guy who's, you know, one of the most storied sluggers in the sport, you might lean his direction, and so that's what he That's what ultimately happened.

  • Eventually what Volonte comes in and just gets cracked with right and when I thought was really amazing was an Intuit extent.

  • Brian Stann pointed this out was just how there were times that earlier in that fight show God had him rocked and just didn't really do a lot in this particular case, really rocked him and then was very careful about how he closed the distance to add weapons and add the frequency of attacks.

  • So he didn't just charge in.

  • He kind of just waited, I believe, even used another kick and then outside punch.

  • And then once he got in a range, actually angled off to the side, didn't stand quite right in front of him, kind of angle off to the side and then unloaded.

  • And that was all she needed, you know, talking about a guy who knows a devastating finisher but a smart one at this point and just really, really lethal and his ability to manage that kind of distance.

  • So good stuff from showing their involuntary, you know, he sort of up he's down.

  • I think he's still usable the light heavyweight, but, um man, the one Achilles heel he's really shown has been his striking defense and virtually all of his losses.

  • That's what has cost him.

  • Um, I don't know what he's gonna do about it.

  • Edson Barboza defeating by Neil Dru at 3 35 of the second round via Ko Flying Me.

  • We're gonna look at this in the second frame.

  • Um, I don't want to spoil too much, except to say, I think that that's Amar.

  • Bose is absolutely a potential title contender in this division.

  • I know he had that setback against Ferguson, but since then he has been on a tear.

  • We'll talk about that in just a few minutes, really, quite an incredible show from him on this one, even though it was also an equally incredible show from door Ayush.

  • It's just that for every for every opportunity, for every effort, even if it's smart, clever and well executed, every style every game plan has as an answer.

  • And he found it and it had devastating consequences.

  • So, um, we'll talk about that in the second segment in more detail.

  • Ray Borg defeating juicier Formiga 29 28 across the board.

  • I think it's a pretty fair call.

  • It was hard to say exactly because I thought the leg kicks of Formiga and that second round you saw it kind of hurt.

  • Um, it hurt Borg, but in the end, it Justin wasn't necessarily enough to me.

  • Borgman that uppercut.

  • Whoa!

  • It covers distance quickly, and it lands a lot of authority.

  • He was crushing for me.

  • Go with in that first round of the landed at least twice only threatened it more often.

  • Surprisingly, I thought Bork was, if not the better, grappler, the more resilient one and scrambles.

  • We're gonna take a look at one of their scrambles in the third round.

  • But in the end, just did Maura win.

  • Had debt more devastating shots on, was a little bit busier in all the various departments rib or gets a surprising guy.

  • He missed weight against Louis smoker.

  • But smoke is a tough bastard, and ray board kind of put it on him.

  • And here he is against you.

  • Sure, Formiga and did a really great job.

  • So I'm I think there are still some things he needs to clean up, but that might be your next title contender.

  • You know what they're going to adjust Benavidez at flyweight, but Ray Borg has been impressive.

  • He's kind of come out of nowhere, but he had a strong performance at UFC.

  • Two of 17 of strong performance here.

  • Kids.

  • Good man.

  • He's really, really good.

  • So he doesn't blow you away with any one thing.

  • But he can do a lot.

  • You could do a lot of it.

  • Well, he's hard to hold down.

  • Um, you know, maybe some kickboxing things he can clean up, but But he's good.

  • He's really, really good.

  • Um, let's do the sea.

  • Let's keep going here.

  • Marianne were no versus betcha.

  • Hair reaching a majority draw.

  • 29 27 2 28 2 28 28 I should say so.
