  • Today it’s International Women’s Day.

  • And we would like to tell you a story.

  • The story ofEstudio del natural”,

  • painted in 1887.

  • It’s a painting of a woman.

  • But not only because it represents the figure of a women.

  • At the time, the painting was presented as a work by Luisrmig.

  • But as a matter of fact, the author was a woman:

  • Concepción Figuera Martínez y Güertero.

  • She used the pseudonym that her uncle used, a politician, also a writer.

  • She painted this work because she expected to be judged by her worth,

  • independently from the fact that she was a woman.

  • She hid her name, her gender,

  • waiting for a fairer judgment.

  • The press considered the painting as a promising artwork by a young artist.

  • The media emphasized its quality and its merits.

  • The painting even received a diploma

  • and was acquired by the State.

  • Until recently,

  • art history considered it as an artwork by Luisrmig.

  • Nothing else.

  • This is only one of the unknown stories

  • that the Museum will analyze

  • together with the role of women in art during the XIXth century

  • in its upcoming exhibition:

  • Uninvited Guests”.

  • Concepción Figuera Martínez y Guertero is, unfortunately,

  • only one of the artists that, even today, are unnoticed by art history,

  • we barely know more that essential information and the size of the work.

Today it’s International Women’s Day.
