  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 198. The idiom today is to go to

  • great lengths to do something. Okay let's take a look at the note here. This idiom

  • could also be rephrased to to go to any length to do something. So you could go

  • to great lengths to do something or go to any length to get something done.

  • All right. Let's continue. If one goes to any or great lengths to achieve

  • something, it means one will try to do almost anything to get a desired result.

  • Okay. Let's take a look at the first example here. The Democrats went to great

  • lengths to try to stop that judge's appointment to the Supreme Court, but

  • failed. Yeah. It means if you go through a lot of effort you try many, many things , but

  • yeah. So you at least tried it. It doesn't mean you'll always succeed. Sometimes you

  • will succeed. Sometimes you may fail, but you put in a lot of effort and you put

  • in a lot of time and you try many many ways of doing it. Let's take a look at

  • number two. He would go to any lengths to protect his daughter. Yes. Sometimes you

  • see this especially in movies somebody say they would go to any lengths to get

  • something done, especially to to protect a loved one. We might hear that. All right.

  • And let's look at number three. They would go to any lengths in order to hold on

  • to their power including cheating , lying, stealing, murdering , etc. Yeah. We've

  • probably heard this before. A lot of people would go to many, many lengths. So to

  • go to great lengths in order to keep power that they've gotten. Okay. Anyway I

  • hope it's clear. I hope you got it. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
