  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 95. The verb phrase today is to

  • mow down or to mow somebody down. All right. We got two meanings. Let's look at the

  • first one. If you mow someone down, you kill one or

  • more people by shooting a lot of bullets at them. You might see this in some

  • movies. Maybe some soldiers or maybe some gangsters with a machine gun shooting at

  • a lot of people and they shoot down several people all at once. That's to mow

  • someone down. All right. Let's look at the second one. To kill or seriously injure

  • someone by hitting them with a vehicle that is moving very fast. Okay. You can

  • see this in the movies too a lot. Let's look at the first example. They mowed down

  • that group with a machine gun. Yeah. So again whether it's you know,

  • soldiers or terrorists or somebody That's what it means that they shot and

  • they shot a lot of people down all at the same time. All right. Let's look at

  • number two. That whistleblower was mowed down by a hit-and-run driver. All right.

  • Yeah. yeah. Maybe sometimes . maybe some group, some company or maybe some

  • government agency. Maybe they want to get rid of this whistleblower. So this might

  • be a way of trying to kill him and make it look like an accident.

  • So the whistleblower was mowed down by a hit-and-run driver. Hit and run driver

  • when somebody just runs, runs over somebody and they don't stop. They just keep

  • going. That's a hit-and-run driver . so if a driver hit someone and they don't stop

  • they don't try to stop for an ambulance. They just keep going. That's hit-and-run.

  • Okay. Let's look at the last one. That driver had a heart attack at the wheel

  • and mowed down several pedestrians . Yeah. All of these are terrible. Unfortunately

  • but that's what we mean. We do hear this. You can mow down people in this way.

  • So both of the car and both by like shooting people. Anyway I hope it's clear.
