  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 78. The noun phrase today is a

  • rule of thumb. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. A rule of thumb is a guide

  • or principle often based on experience. Or you know, those people that have

  • experience and they say you know, you should do this or you should follow this

  • rule. So let's continue here. The origin and phrase is unclear. Yeah. I've read

  • that there's a few different ideas about where it might have come from, but this

  • is a ... we'll just mention one here. Some think it may refer to the idea that

  • an inch came from the measurement from the joint to the tip of the thumb. Yeah.

  • If you're looking at your finger like from here to here. It looks like about an

  • inch. It does look similar to it. So I don't know if that's where it came from

  • or not , but that's what some people think. All right. Let's look at the couple of

  • examples here. Number one. If you go overseas , as a rule of thumb don't carry

  • cash.. That's what they usually tell you or don't carry all cash. Most still

  • advise traveler's checks. You know, some people I don't know, maybe they use a

  • credit card but that could be dangerous too. In case that gets stolen, than

  • you can lose more money. All right. Let's look at number two here. If you are going

  • to climb very high mountains, like Mount Everest or some comparable sort of a

  • high mountain. As a rule of thumb you should carry an oxygen bottle with you

  • just in case you experience either some altitude sickness or have trouble

  • breathing. When you're up at the top of the mountain there. Yeah. You , you don't

  • want to end up and turn it into some sort of an emergency situation where

  • where it could be fatal, a fatal trip. Anyway, I hope you got it. I

  • hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
